Character Setting

Edit

Rika Furude is a mysterious and central character in When They Cry, known for her duality of innocence and wisdom, as well as her struggles with an endless repeating fate.

Rika appears as a girl in her late years of elementary school, with striking straight, navy-blue long hair and a short, blunt fringe.

She is often seen wearing a light green, suspender-style dress with a slit at the chest, and, in her school uniform, a white shirt with a pleated skirt and a pink ribbon at the collar.

She carries herself with an adorable aura and is conscious of her cuteness, occasionally taking advantage of it.

Rika frequently clasps her hands behind her back, sometimes hiding what she's holding, making her actions unpredictable.

She is also seen with cat ears and a tail during certain comedic moments, adding to her charm.

Despite her childlike looks, she has a complex about her lack of physical development, especially compared to Sonozaki Mion and Houjou Satoko, and drinks milk diligently in hopes of growing.

Rika’s speech is gentle and childlike, often ending sentences with “–desu” and “–nano desu,” and using phrases like “mii” and “nipaa.”

Her demeanor is generally soft and sweet, contrasting with the mischievous nature of her best friend and roommate, Houjou Satoko.

However, her true self is far more cunning, mature, and even a little calculating due to her unique experiences.

She tends to manipulate situations using her charm, and can exert a subtle authority as the head of the powerful Furude clan, who are revered in Hinamizawa Village.

Rika switches between her innocent persona and a darker, more insightful self, often referred to as "Black Rika," especially when alone or with Hanyuu Furude.

Despite her complexity and the burden she bears, Rika deeply loves her friends, desiring nothing more than a peaceful, happy life together.

Her many trials have given her a sense of melancholy and philosophical depth.

Rika was born on August 21, Showa year 46 (1971), and her blood type is A.

She is the last daughter of the Furude family, a clan with deep spiritual and political influence in Hinamizawa.

As the present head priestess, Rika is responsible for rituals honoring the village's guardian deity and is considered sacred by villagers.

She lives in the Furude shrine with Houjou Satoko after both lost their families to tragedy.

Rika is the only character in the story aware of the endless repeating cycles of June 1983, reincarnating every time a horrific tragedy occurs in Hinamizawa.

Her consciousness spans countless parallel worlds, giving her knowledge, experience, and a maturity beyond her years.

Along with Hanyuu Furude, a supernatural entity who accompanies and supports her, Rika attempts to break the cycle and find a world where her friends can be safe and happy.

Her closest friend and housemate is Houjou Satoko, with whom she shares a complex, sisterly bond marked by loyalty and pain.

Hanyuu Furude acts as her companion, mentor, and emotional crutch through her many cycles of suffering.

She cares deeply for all members of the “club,” particularly Sonozaki Mion, Ryuuguu Rena, and Maebara Keiichi, wishing to protect their happiness at all costs.

Rika’s social circle and the relationships forged in the village define her motivations and drive her ongoing struggle.

Rika was the favorite character of BT, a key staff member on 07th Expansion, and features in the mini-game "Rika-chan's Stroll."

Her habit of ending sentences with "nano desu" is likely a reference to a similarly named character from Touhou Project.

Her signature gesture of folding hands behind her back stems from an early concept where she would converse with a doll.

She drinks Bernkastel-Kues wine, a subtle nod to philosophical concepts of tolerance and unity.

Comedically, when angry or flustered (often in "Black Rika" mode), she is much easier to annoy than her sweet exterior implies.

Rika is notably the only main character to remain single in the modern era depicted in "When They Cry Rei," with all other club members married.

"I want to live. To spend each day happily surrounded by my dear friends. That’s all I wish for."

"Those who die have it easy, able to be swept away in their own martyrdom. The one who kills must bear that cross for life."

"Just board the Nipaa. If not, then go back to Tokyo."

"Disgusting, third-rate! Do you think you can interfere with me with that level?"

"You don’t know true strength! To endure isn’t strength alone... Satoshi faced his fears—he fought for you. That’s strength!"

"No one should stand outside the circle in tears, no one should bear guilt alone. When we all unite and forgive, that’s the real miracle."

"Let’s begin. This is the moment I spent 100 years waiting for."

"I won’t run. I know fate is flimsier than a goldfish net!"

"A world with no losers—this is the answer Rika Furude discovered after a thousand-year journey."

Origin

Rika was born as the priestess of the Furude family, her life defined by sacred duties and her connection to the mysteries of Hinamizawa.

She loses her parents early, becoming the last of her line and forging a strong bond with Houjou Satoko.

The Endless June 1983

Rika is caught in a horrifying time loop, forced to relive the June of 1983 repeatedly, each world ending in tragedy.

Her memories accumulate, making her the only one aware of the repeating cycles, and she struggles to break free from fate.

With Hanyuu Furude’s help, Rika learns about the rules governing the tragedies and seeks a “fragment” or timeline where her friends survive.

Miracle and Resolution

Through countless iterations and with the support of her friends, Rika ultimately unites the group and unravels the deep conspiracy threatening Hinamizawa.

Her journey becomes a testament to hope, forgiveness, and believing in miracles.

Later Developments ("When They Cry Gou" and "Rei")

Rika once again faces new tragedies as the loop is forcibly resumed by outside forces, pushing her into even greater trials.

In the modern era, having finally escaped the cycle, Rika leaves the village to travel freely. However, she returns, only to suffer a small misfortune and is hospitalized at the start of the story.

She speaks more maturely and has left behind her “cat-like” persona, standing as the only unmarried member of her old club, reflecting on the changes in her friends’ lives.

Rika appears as a high school student and upperclassman to Sonozaki Mion in the prototype stage play "Hinamizawa Bus Stop."

She features prominently in official art, spin-off games, and crossovers, beloved for her unique charm, wisdom, and resilience.

Rika’s story is a blend of tragedy, hope, and the enduring bonds of friendship.
