Character Setting

Edit

Crust is a professional hero from My Hero Academia, ranked 6th on the Hero Billboard Chart JP and known as a passionate, orthodox “classic hero” type who wields the Quirk “Shield.”

Crust is a top-ranked pro hero who appears in the main My Hero Academia storyline.

He maintains a solid 6th place in the Hero Billboard Chart JP (second half of the year), with his ranking described as stable and consistent.

He is introduced during the Hero Billboard Chart JP conference alongside Keigo Takami (Hawks), Rumi Usagiyama (Mirko), Susugu Mitarai (Wash), and Yoroi Musha.

Though not as heavily spotlighted as some other pros, his actions firmly establish him as one of the leading heroes of his era.

Hero Name: Shield Hero Crust

Quirk: Shield

Crust’s hero branding revolves around the image of the stalwart defender.

His reputation is built on both his defensive power and his willingness to risk everything to protect others.

Crust is described as “The Orthodox Man,” representing the classic, passionate hero archetype.

He is hot-blooded, emotional, and unafraid to wear his heart on his sleeve.

He is extremely sentimental and often moved to tears, even in public.

During the Hero Billboard Chart JP event, he openly sobs over Toshinori Yagi (All Might)’s retirement, ignoring how it might look in front of cameras.

His kindness and emotional nature earn him strong popularity among fans.

Some find his over-the-top passion a bit much, but many supporters say that intensity is exactly what they love about him.

Despite his emotional demeanor, Crust is undeniably a first-rate pro hero.

He is considered one of the pillars among the top professionals, with a track record to match his ranking.

Around five years before the main story, Crust subdued and captured the dangerous villain Dictator.

This achievement further solidifies his status as a key figure among top heroes.

He deeply reveres All Might and sees him as an ideal to live up to.

At the billboard conference, he is the only top hero who directly addresses All Might’s retirement, mourning the end of an era.

Crust also shows regret and self-criticism as a hero.

He laments that he could not take part in the Kamino Ward rescue operation, still dwelling on his inability to help during that crucial incident.

This tendency to dwell on past failures is shared by several top 10 heroes.

Because of this, Hawks points out that even though the world has reached a turning point, many heroes like Crust are not truly changing how they approach the new era.

Crust wears a hero costume that emphasizes both protection and impact.

A notable feature is the gauntlets on his arms, decorated with a pattern similar to a tortoiseshell motif.

His eyes are covered by a mask, but his emotions are obvious regardless.

He is frequently so overwhelmed that tears stream from his eyes, making his expressions easy to read even with most of his face hidden.

Crust is also one of the relatively few heroes in the series who wears a cape or mantle.

The mantle enhances his “classic hero” vibe, contributing to his image as a traditional, noble protector.

Crust has a younger brother, though the brother’s hero name is not revealed.

This brother shares the same Quirk, “Shield,” and even wears a hero costume very similar to Crust’s.

The existence of another Shield user in his family suggests a hereditary element to their Quirk.

It also hints at a shared heroic path or at least a shared aspiration within his family.

Quirk Name: Shield

Crust’s Quirk allows him to generate shields from all over his body.

These shields are solid, hard, physical objects resembling protective armor rather than intangible energy barriers.

The shields form as hexagonal, tortoiseshell-like segments that can link together.

Because they have actual substance, they can block physical blows, projectiles, and potentially other types of attacks depending on their durability.

While primarily defensive, his shields can be used offensively as well.

By generating them at point-blank range or launching them outward, Crust can turn his defense into a powerful attack.

He is skilled at rapidly deploying shields in critical situations.

This allows him to protect allies, alter the battlefield, and strike in close quarters with surprising lethality.

Signature Technique

Shoot Shield

Crust creates a shield and hurls it like a boomerang.

This technique has enough cutting power to easily sever a Nomu’s arm, demonstrating that his “shields” double as deadly weapons.

Shoot Shield lets him attack from mid-range while still playing to the strengths of his Quirk.

It showcases how a defensive ability can become highly aggressive in the right hands.

Hero Billboard Chart JP Appearance

Crust first appears during the Hero Billboard Chart JP second-half ranking announcement.

He stands on stage alongside top heroes such as Hawks, Mirko, Wash, and Yoroi Musha.

When the host asks him for a comment, Crust breaks down in tears.

He openly grieves All Might’s retirement and voices his frustration over not having participated in the Kamino Ward rescue mission.

His emotional speech contrasts with the more composed, media-conscious responses of other heroes.

However, it also emphasizes his sincerity and deep sense of responsibility.

Hawks uses this moment to criticize the mindset of the current top heroes.

He suggests that, despite living through a major turning point, heroes like Crust are too focused on past regrets and not enough on adapting to the new reality.

Paranormal Liberation War

During the all-out war against the Paranormal Liberation Front, Crust is deployed with the hospital assault team.

His squad targets Jaku General Hospital, where Kyudai Garaki’s secret research facilities are hidden underground.

Crust advances alongside Enji Todoroki (Endeavor) and other pro heroes.

They break into the underground lab, confronting multiple High-End Nomu in intense combat.

Thanks to the combined efforts of Mirko, Endeavor, Shota Aizawa (Eraser Head), Hizashi Yamada (Present Mic), X-less, and others, the heroes begin to seize control of the facility.

Their operation moves steadily toward its objective: stopping the revival of Tenko Shimura (Tomura Shigaraki).

However, just as it seems they are about to succeed, Shigaraki awakens from his near-death state.

He unleashes his enhanced Quirk, a spreading decay that rampages outward and indiscriminately destroys everything in its path.

Crust is located close to the epicenter of Shigaraki’s Decay.

Because of this, he has almost no time to react, and his body starts to erode as the destruction reaches him.

Even as his own body is disintegrating, Crust continues to act as a hero.

He notices that a Nomu is pinning down Aizawa and threatening to keep him from using his Quirk at the critical moment.

With what little time he has left, Crust uses his Shoot Shield technique to sever the Nomu’s arm restraining Aizawa.

By doing so, he frees Aizawa, allowing him to continue erasing Shigaraki’s Quirk and thereby enabling the heroes to fight on.

Crust is consumed by the spreading Decay shortly after this final act.

He dies in the line of duty, his body lost, but his sacrifice directly contributes to the survival and continued resistance of his allies.

His last moments embody the ideals he admired in All Might: sacrificing everything for others.

Even while being utterly overpowered by a terrifying new enemy, he manages to pass the torch and help preserve a sliver of hope for the battles to come.
