Character Setting

Edit

Gringham is a male worker and the leader of the large Baharuth Empire worker team “Heavy Masher,” whose combat ability is comparable to a mithril-ranked adventurer, but who meets a gruesome end inside the Great Tomb of Nazarick.

Gringham commands the worker team Heavy Masher, composed of 14 members, operating out of the Baharuth Empire.

He is known as a frontline fighter whose strength and practical skill place him on par with high-ranking adventurers.

He was born as the third son of a farming family in the Re-Estize Kingdom.

Driven by a desire to surpass his elder brothers, he clawed his way up from a poor rural background to his current position.

Gringham once participated in a royal exhibition tournament in the Re-Estize Kingdom.

There, he faced Brain Unglaus in the quarterfinals and was utterly defeated, unable to put up any real resistance.

Within the group of worker teams hired to explore the Great Tomb of Nazarick, Gringham plays a central, coordinating role.

Drawing on many years of combat experience, he is capable of surviving and responding to a wide range of attacks—at least until he encounters Nazarick’s true horrors.

His story ultimately ends in tragedy when his team is caught in a teleportation trap within Nazarick.

Separated from his allies and sent into a deadly domain, he is captured and consumed alive.

Gringham’s most striking behavioral trait is his peculiar, grandiose way of speaking.

He refers to himself as “I” in a formal, archaic sense and addresses others with an equally ceremonious “thou,” giving him an almost theatrical tone.

This unusual speech pattern is not mere affectation; it is a survival strategy.

Because he grew up as a farmer’s son without proper education, he adopted this style to disguise his lack of learning and to project a more dignified, intimidating persona.

He studied as hard as he could to make up for his lack of schooling, but his talent lay in combat, not academics.

Recognizing his limits, he turned to mannerisms and presentation to compensate, masking insecurity with formality.

Gringham uses this stiff, ornate way of speaking especially while on the job.

He believes that if he loosens up, people might underestimate his team or look down on him and his companions.

He is deeply considerate of his comrades in Heavy Masher, who chose to value his abilities beyond mere book learning.

To avoid bringing shame or embarrassment to the team, he insists on maintaining an imposing, respectable demeanor whenever he is in a professional setting.

Underneath the heavy armor and pompous speech, he is a hardworking, self-made warrior with a strong sense of responsibility.

His pride is less about arrogance and more about not wanting to disappoint the people who entrusted their lives to his leadership.

Gringham’s physique is compact but extremely sturdy, reminiscent of a dwarf-like warrior.

His legs are short, yet his overall build is robust and well-suited for close-quarters combat.

He wears a full suit of steel-colored armor that gives him a distinctive silhouette.

When he stands upright, the armor makes him resemble a bipedal rhinoceros beetle, emphasizing bulk and toughness over elegance.

From the forehead of his helmet, a prominent horn-like protrusion juts forward.

This is clearly an intentional design choice, reinforcing the beetle-like impression and projecting a fearsome, charging-warrior image.

The massive armor, combined with his physical build, makes Gringham appear more like an advancing metal juggernaut than a typical human fighter.

This intimidating appearance complements his carefully cultivated persona as a powerful, reliable leader.

Commission to Explore Nazarick

Gringham is hired by an imperial noble, Count Fehmeil of the Baharuth Empire, to participate in an expedition.

Heavy Masher sends five members, including Gringham himself, to join several other worker teams in infiltrating the Great Tomb of Nazarick.

At the beginning of the exploration, the enemies that appear are merely weak skeletons.

Gringham and the others conclude that the job will not be particularly difficult, and the atmosphere is relatively relaxed.

However, the worker teams eventually split into three separate groups in order to cover more ground.

Gringham leads his own sub-group of Heavy Masher deeper into the tomb, still unaware of how dangerous Nazarick truly is.

Assault by the Elder Lich Army

After the split, Gringham’s sub-team encounters an army of Elder Liches, powerful undead spellcasters commanding hordes of lesser undead.

The situation changes abruptly from easy work to total chaos and terror.

The onslaught is far beyond what they had imagined when they accepted the commission.

Even with Gringham’s extensive experience and his durable armor, the group is overwhelmed, forced into a desperate retreat.

They flee into a nearby chamber in hopes of regrouping and escaping the undead attackers.

Unfortunately, this room contains a hidden teleportation trap that triggers as soon as they rush inside.

Teleportation Trap and Black Coffin

The teleportation sends Gringham and most of his companions to a domain controlled by Kyouhukou, the “Tyrant of Fear,” one of Nazarick’s floor guardians.

Specifically, they are transported into a place referred to as the Black Coffin, a nightmarish containment and feeding ground for Kyouhukou’s brood.

Inside the Black Coffin, Gringham and his teammates are no longer treated as intruders to be repelled, but as living food.

They are captured and slowly devoured alive by Kyouhukou’s countless subordinate creatures.

One of the five Heavy Masher members who entered Nazarick with Gringham is sent to a different location instead of the Black Coffin.

That unfortunate worker is transferred to the chamber of Neuronist Painkill, another terrifying denizen of Nazarick, where a different but equally horrific fate awaits.

Gringham’s careful tactics, intimidating speech, and years of battlefield experience prove meaningless against Nazarick’s overwhelming power and cruel design.

His death is drawn out and agonizing, emphasizing just how outmatched human workers are when they trespass into the realm of Ainz Ooal Gown and his subordinates.

Legacy and Significance

Within the narrative, Gringham serves as an example of a competent, self-made warrior who still falls short in the face of absolute, inhuman power.

His rise from an uneducated farmer’s son to a leader on par with mithril-class adventurers underlines how much effort and determination he invested in his life.

His defeat by Brain Unglaus in the royal tournament foreshadows his limits, contrasting human talent with extraordinary genius.

Later, his demise in Nazarick highlights a different gap: that between even the best human professionals and the monstrous residents of the Great Tomb.

Gringham’s leadership of a large 14-person team shows that he was not just a strong fighter, but also trusted enough to guide many others.

That trust makes his loss—and the destruction of Heavy Masher’s expedition group—all the more tragic.
