Momo Kisaragi (如月 桃 Kisaragi Momo) / Momo (モモ) is the fifth member of the Mekakushi Dan, Shintaro Kisaragi's little sister, a first-year in high-schooler and a recent and very popular idol.
Momo has orange hair that is black behind and underneath her head. Its fringe is longer on the left side of her face, and on the top right side of her head she ties a long lock of hair into a side ponytail. The intensity of how yellow or orange her hair changes between media. She had this hair style even ever since she was a child. She has brown eyes in her introduction in Kisaragi Attention, but in Children Record and other media like Mekakucity Actors her eyes are distinctly black.
She has several outfits when dressing casually. One consists of a a pink short-sleeved hoodie with "阿吽" (aun) written over the chest and a blue shirt underneath with "大江戸" (Ooedo) written on it along with light brown shorts with red sneakers. In the manga, her hoodie reads "鎖国" (Sakoku). She also ties her side ponytail up with a blue scrunchie.
Alternatively, in Otsukimi Recital and the end of Summertime Record, she wears a 3/4-sleeved pink dress that has white, checkered paneling on its front torso, which also functions as a hoodie with a pink hood. It also has a pink bow on its back at her waist. She also wears short black leggings, yellow sandals, and a red scrunchie in her hair.
In the Novel Route, after August 15th she wears a long hoodie with its sleeves bunched up to her elbows over a button-up blouse that has a dark trim on its collar and placket.
Momo's most well-known idol outfit consists of an orange dress that has a yellow strip down its middle that is bordered by white, frilly lace and extra lace on the lower front section of the left side of its skirt. Two black straps also hang off the bottom of her skirt, one at its front yellow panel and the other beneath the frills on its left. She has a large black belt around her waist that has a large chain behind it that ties into a "ribbon". Another short chain hangs from a black collar that she wears underneath her dress's white collar, which also has three red buttons below it. She has detached black sleeves that have orange coverings and white frills around her upper arms. She wears a yellow thigh high on her right leg and a longer orange one on her left leg, black hoop anklets, and black closed-toe shoes that have a strap across the insteps. Her hair also has a matching braid that starts below her left ear, wraps up her head like a hairband, and becomes loose around her side-ponytail, which is also tied with a red ribbon, or sometimes blue to match with her alternate palette seen in Kisaragi Attention.
When in middle school, two years before the present-day storyline begin, she is seen wearing her middle school uniform, which consists of a black sailor fuku. In high school, her summer uniform consists of a white short-sleeved dress shirt and a pink and black plaid skirt.
In the short film Kagerou Daze -in a day's-, she wears a brown collar underneath a white t-shirt and a thin yellow ribbon tied around her brown, high-waisted skirt, which also has two small yellow buttons on its top center. The skirt also has two thick suspenders that go over her shoulders and down her back. She wears high, ribbed brown socks and dark yellow high-top sneakers. Her hair is mostly down except for two small, high pigtails.
Momo is an eccentric girl whose unique personality and eye ability give her trouble with making friends, despite her status as a famous pop idol. Though insecure, or because she is, she deliberately puts her all into everything she does, from studying to being a pop idol to helping out her friends.
Jin has stated that her personality is pretty much the same as her brother's. For example, they are both very expressive and both can make complex plans in stressful situations. Furthermore, they both really enjoy drinking soda. However, Momo is overall more energetic and optimistic than Shintaro and, unlike him, smiles regularly, especially when around her friends. Also unlike her brother, she does not do well in school and is often scolded by her teacher for her scores, such as a 2/100 grade on a biology exam.
Momo can also be described as quirky; for example, her studying method for the aforementioned test was to eat her notes, and her answers were based on her own logic and imagination rather than anything from her lessons. She also has a noticeably peculiar sense of aesthetics, fashion, and tastes in food; for example, she snacks on dried shredder squid and red bean soup flavored soda daily. When seeing something that fits her niche of interests, she becomes infatuated with it and will go lengths to get it, if possible.
Having grown up with an inferiority complex about her genius brother, Momo always felt stuck in his shadow and was unable to have confidence in herself, wishing for people to pay more attention to her. As a child, she wanted to be better than him with at least one thing, which she chose to be swimming. However, she drowned with her dad in a beach trip and afterwards gained the Snake of Drawing Eyes, which was compatible with her wishes. She blamed herself primarily for her father's death and was unaware of the powers she gained.
The new attention she gained from her powers was immediately noticeable, and, while it often scared her and stressed her out, Momo was able to find some of its perks and first took pride in consistently got first place in art contests. However, after hearing another classmate's envious rant about her, Momo became depressed about how "abnormal" she was. Even after becoming a very popular idol, she did not feel like she is actually different from other people besides the attention she got. After meeting the Mekakushi Dan, she becomes more cheerful and learns to treasure her friends. Because of how the Dan helped her, she will put her full effort into helping others. such as Hibiya Amamiya when he is upset over losing Hiyori Asahina, as seen in multiple iterations of Otsukimi Recital. Furthermore, because of how she lost her father, she will put her full effort into searching for someone who is missing.
She seems to have trouble rejecting people who make her uncomfortable, such as an idol scout when she was a kid and to her fans and Kano in Manga Route 2. In all instances, someone else stepped in for her instead. However, she has shown bravery when she wants to help or save her loved ones. For example, she ultimately decided to become an idol to financially help her mother, who has been raising her two children on her own since her husband's death and recently collapsed from poor health. In the terrorist incident, she manages to calm herself and make a complex and successful plan despite knowing that her brother Shintaro is in danger. In the Music Route, Novel Route, and likely Manga Route 1, she dies by shielding Marry with her own body during the Snake of Clearing Eyes' attack on the Mekakushi Dan. In Manga Route 2, she spends much of her time and energy trying to help Hibiya and Hiyori, and in both that Route and Otsukimi Recital she collapses after exhausting herself as a result.
Drawing Eyes (目を奪う Me o Ubau): Momo's eye ability can draw peoples' attention to herself regardless of their preferences in tastes or interests. She is also able to tell where a person's attention is drawn to. She cannot control her power as well as Kido because her power only has an "on and off" switch. The maximum range and power of her ability is quite large, as she is seen attracting the attention of an entire city despite being locked indoors within a facility. Later on, she demonstrates better control of her ability, able to remotely direct people's attention away from herself. She uses her eye power to catch people's attention during her performances.
Her voice actor is Nanami Kashiyama.
Backstory:
Momo's backstory remains consistent across all known Routes.
Momo grew up with her parents and older brother, Shintaro. Though they got along well, Momo developed an inferiority complex from feeling overshadowed by Shintaro's genius intelligence, and she wished that others would pay more attention to her.
The Kagerou Daze manga shows that, one August 15th, a young Momo decided to become better than Shintaro at swimming, and she visited the beach with her father while Shintaro stayed home to study. Momo ended up swimming too far from shore, and her father tried to save her. The two drowned and entered the Kagerou Daze, where Momo obtained the Snake of Drawing Eyes. Momo returned alone and was found unharmed on the beach the next day, and her father was declared missing and dead. Though her family does not share her feelings, Momo blamed herself for her father's death.
After the incident, Drawing Eyes brought unwanted and a large amount of attention to Momo. In the Anime Route, a recruiter from an idol agency approached her home while she was still in elementary school, and her mother drove him away. It's also shown in Manga Route 2 that Momo has stalkers who leave letters in her family mailbox and loiter around their home, and Shintaro would drive them away when possible.
While she was in elementary school, Momo's art won a contest and became a famous author's book's cover, and the book then became a bestseller. She would pursue art into middle school, but she eventually quit her after school art club when tension from other members arose.
About two years before the present day, Momo witnessed her brother drop out of school following his friends' deaths and was concerned about him.
About a year before the present day, Momo met and befriended Ene, a mysterious cyber girl who began living in Shintaro's computer. Ene told Momo about Shintaro's bad habits, including his secret digital folders, and Momo's attitude towards him changed from older sibling reverence to faint disgust.
With more free time from no longer being in a club, Momo got more offers from random idol agency recruiters on the street, and she eventually accepted an offer when her mother started having trouble with work. In Mekakucity Actors, this is shown to be Mrs. Kisaragi collapsing and being hospitalized from overwork. Momo became a very successful idol from her very first gig, despite her earnestly believing that she is unfit for the job, and, as attention towards her only grew, she began to see herself as an “abnormal” girl.
About three months before the present day, Momo enrolled into her high school as a first year student with Kenjirou Tateyama as her homeroom teacher. She remarks in -in a daze- that she only got into the prestigious school because it's close to where she lives.
Momo's August 14th is depicted in Kisaragi Attention. She decides to go out in a hoodie, but a gust of wind blows it away and people immediately notice her. They chase her until she reaches an alleyway, where she cries before Tsubomi Kido approaches her. Kido then takes Momo to the Mekakushi Dan hideout, where she meets Shuuya Kano and Marry Kozakura, the latter of who accidentally spills tea all over Momo. When Marry comes back with a rag, she trips again and accidentally flings it at Momo's face. Momo can't help but to laugh.
At some point, Momo meets Kousuke Seto and takes a selfie with the whole Mekakushi Dan. AT the end of the PV, the four watch Momo live at one of her concerts, where she wears her pink hoodie over her idol outfit.
According to the timeline guide, Otsukimi Recital is not considered to be a part of the Music Route. Furthermore, one of the last parts of the Kisaragi Attention that contain Shintaro is not considered to be part of the Music Route because Jin confirmed that the Route has the events of Jinzou Enemy and Route XX from Losstime Memory.
Eventually, as depicted in Outer Science, the Snake of Clearing Eyes posseses Konoha and kills Momo alongside other members of the Mekakushi Dan. This causes Marry to rewind the world with her Combining Eyes and end the Route.
Momo's experience on August 14th in the Manga Route is nearly identical to that of the Novel Route, except she meets Seto at the Mekakushi Dan hideout while Shintaro is unconscious rather than on August 15th after Shintaro wakes up.
Her experience on August 15th is likewise similar until the Mekakushi Dan leave the amusement park, when they encounter Black Konoha who attacks and kills Kano, Seto, and Kido. Momo shields Marry with her own body when he points at his gun at them. Shintaro then rushes in to protect his sister and is also killed. It is likely that Momo is killed last before Marry rewinds the world, ending the Route.
August 14th
Momo starts off the day late to school because she runs into fans on the way. Her manager picks her up from the crowd and, in the car, scolds her for insisting on walking to school. There, her teacher, Kenjirou, admonishes her latest biology test score of 2/100, and they argue over her answers. He tells Momo that she will have to retake the test before informing her that, since she missed first period, classes are already over for the Obon holiday. Momo goes outside and has a drink of soda before finding a flyer with a sockeye salmon keychain that she decides she must have.
Momo changes out of her school uniform in hopes to not draw any attention, but her Drawing Eyes cause fans to soon find and surround her. When she flees into an alley, her manager calls and scolds her, causing Momo to quit on the spot. Kido appears, and Momo, mistaking her as a worker for her photoshoot, follows Kido to to the Mekakushi Dan hideout. There, Kano introduces her to the Mekakushi Dan. Momo questions about the photoshoot, and Kido questions Kano. Apparently, Kano lied to Kido that she would find a girl to bring back to the hideout, leading to this situation. Kido is angry at Kano but tells Momo that, now that she knows about them, they can't just let her leave.
Kano suggests that they can help Momo with her "ability" to attract people's attention. They show her Kido's ability, Concealing Eyes, which detracts attention away from her to make it seem as if she disappears. Momo, now learning that her "peculiarity" may be something supernatural and controllable, eagerly agrees to join the Mekakushi Dan.
Momo then spots Marry at the doorway, and Kano and Kido bring Marry out to introduce herself. Marry then flees to make tea, and Kido and Kano remark that Marry did really well with her introduction. At Kano's suggestion, Momo types an apology text to her manager. Marry returns and trips, spilling tea all over Momo. Momo’s phone sends the text before breaking, Marry's cups shatter, Marry apologizes, Kano and Kido rush to save the phone, and Momo inexplicably enjoys herself and vows to work hard in the Mekakushi Dan.
Momo takes a shower and wears borrowed clothes, and, though the Mekakushi Dan tried their best with silica beads, they are unable to save her s phone. Kido and Kano chide Marry for breaking the phone and being unable to pay for it with her current wages. Momo offers to pay for her new phone herself, and Kido and Kano somehow pressure her into again agreeing to do this. They also look through Momo's wallet and tease her for her daily receipts of dried squid snacks and red bean soda.
Momo learns from Marry that the broken cups were a memento from Marry's later mother, so she asks Kido if they can go to a department store rather than a phone store so that they can also buy Marry new cups. Kano then teases Marry for her choice of socks, angering Marry to the point that she uses her eye ability, Locking Eyes, on him to freeze him in the spot. Kido explains that Marry's grandmother was a Medusa that Marry inherited her ability from.
Kido's Concealing Eyes suppresses Momo's own ability, and Momo enjoys the new freedom while walking outside with the others whiel learning about Kano's Deceiving Eyes. At the department store, she spots her brother Shintaro, and the surprise at seeing him prompts her to say "big brother" aloud. This gets everyone's attention, and Momo, embarrassed, hurries them to the seventh floor where they can buy her a new phone. Unfortunately for Momo, Shintaro is there as well. She sees him apparently talking to himself and concludes that Ene must be with him.
Kido and Kano notice a man with hidden weapons, so Kido orders Kano to get Shintaro so they can all flee. Unfortunately, the terrorists attack then, causing the building's security system to lock the floor down. Momo, Kido, and Marry stay safe because of Kido's Concealing Eyes, but Momo sees Shintaro among the hostages and panics. Then, Kano sends a text to Kido, who in turn gives her phone to Momo. She sees Kano took a selfie with Shintaro unaware behind him. Kido explains that Kano's Deceiving Eyes makes him appear to be taken hostage alongside the others, and Momo finds herself less scared now.
Momo suddenly thinks of using Ene to hack the floor's security system and types out a plan on Kido's phone. She has Kano confirm Ene's presence and then thinks of additional steps to prevent anyone from getting hurt when the floor opens again. Kido, Marry, and Kano approve of the plan, and the girls move in closer to the terrorists. When Shintaro accidentally gets the leader's attention, they push over various shelves, including one over the leader, to cause a distraction. As Momo expected, Shintaro and Ene hack the security system to open, but then she hears a shot ring out and sees Shintaro collapsed on the ground.
Momo is scared for her brother, but Kido reminds her of the plan. Marry looks at Momo in the eye and reassures her that everything will be alright, and Momo suddenly feels calm. Momo brings everyone's attention to herself with her Drawing Eyes before having Marry step in front of her with her Locking Eyes, freezing both terrorists and hostages in place when the police come in. Momo then runs to Shintaro, who Kano confirms was grazed by the bullet but is otherwise unharmed. The Mekakushi Dan then flee the store after Marry, who left Kido's Concealing Eyes radius to return her improvised weapon of a massager, is questioned by the police. Momo then spends the night at the Mekakushi Dan hideout with Ene, who is still in Shintaro's phone, while her brother recovers in Marry's room.
August 15th
While Shintaro was unconscious, Ene requests that they all go to an amusement park. When Shintaro wakes up, Momo greets him with the others and scolds him for his recklessness. Kano then tells Shintaro about the Mekakushi Dan, prompting them to inaugurate Ene and Shintaro as members No. 6 and 7. Momo, Shintaro, and Ene then meet Seto when he arrives from one of his part-time jobs. Kido and Kano leave ahead of them to visit their adoptive mother and sister's graves, though they don't say this. Momo's phone recovered thanks to the silica beads, so Ene resides in it as they walk with Shintaro, Seto, and Marry to the amusement park, taking care to go through empty streets so that her Drawing Eyes won't be a hindrance. On the way there, Momo argues with her brother about each other's fashion, their habits, and Seto's name, which they both get wrong.
The Mekakushi Dan meet up at the entrance to the amusement park and first ride a roller coaster together before splitting into groups by gender, though Ene tells the girls that she will return to Shintaro's phone instead. Marry soon splits from Kido and Momo to follow her own plans, and Momo stays with Kido to hide wth her Concealing Eyes. However, they go to a haunted house attraction, and Kido flees by herself during the middle of it, stranding Momo. Momo hides and finds an axe prop and fake blood, so she decorates her head with them for Kido's return. When Kido finally returns, now with Shintaro (and Ene), Momo scares her so badly that she faints, and Momo has to slap her awake.
Kido and Momo split from Shintaro and Ene to gather the rest of the Mekakushi Dan to leave, and the entire group walks back to the hideout. On the way, they encounter a crowd watching a white-haired man and boy be put into an ambulance. Ene recognizes the man as Konoha and yells at Momo to follow the ambulance; Momo does, with Kido, at a slower pace than Shintaro, who goes ahead to chase after it with Ene. Momo and Kido wait by the hospital's gate while hiding with Concealing Eyes.
Momo gets a call from her brother to catch the boy, Hibiya Amamiya, who is running away from the hospital, so Momo grabs him, breaking the effects of Concealing Eyes on her. Hibiya is startled by Momo's sudden appearance and, as an insult, calls her fat. This strikes a nerve with Momo, who lets go of Hibiya to attack him, though Kido stops her by grabbing onto her hood.
Shintaro and Ene arrive with Konoha, and Shintaro questions Hibiya, who says that he is trying to save a girl who may have died, before fainting. Kido catches him and tells the others that they will all go back to the hideout because Hibiya has gained an eye ability. At the hideout, Kido cooks them dinner, and Momo immediately afterwards falls asleep on a couch in the living room. Shintaro tells Kido that Momo can't be woken up once she falls asleep, no matter what, so Kido carries Momo to her own room for the night.
August 16th
Momo has a dream about herself being a cow while Hibiya goads her and wakes up in Kido's room early in the morning. She is shocked that Kido slept next to her because of her own bad habit of sleep talking. She goes to the bathroom to take a shower, and Hibiya knocks on the door and demands for his vest because there's something important in it. Momo, feeling vindictive, looks into his vest and finds a gift box containing the salmon keychain she tried to get on August 14th. In a towel, Momo bursts out of the bathroom to ask Hibiya for the charm, and he complies.
Hibiya demands to leave the hideout without waiting for the others to wake up, so Momo accompanies him. As they walk, Hibiya explains to her (three times) that he and his friend, Hiyori, were hit by a truck and put into a world where the day repeated over and over. Hiyori might still be there, so Hibiya is out looking for her. He rejects Momo's suggestion to have the Mekakushi Dan help him, and Momo, who feels strongly about searching for missing people because of her father, vows to support him no matter what.
Throughout the day, the two learn more about Hibiya's new eye ability, which he later names Focusing Eyes. Kenjirou drives up to them at some point and, as Momo's teacher, offers them a ride. Hibiya asks to go to the children's park where he and Hiyori were hit by the truck, and Kenjirou teases the two about being a couple as he drives. Kenjirou drops them off, and, at the park, Hibiya continues to look for Hiyori with Focusing Eyes. They learn that the ability lets him to find an object's owner, so Hibiya tries to locate Hiyori through a gift she bought for Konoha. Unfortunately, it doesn't work, and Hibiya becomes discouraged while Momo regrets her own helplessness.
Momo realizes that she's been walking around all day without crowds, meaning that she has gotten her Drawing Eyes under control. She uses Drawing Eyes on the gift to attract more perspectives to it and looks up at the full moon, which seems to be watching her back. It's implied that Hibiya successfully locates Hiyori in the Kagerou Daze after this but then faints from the exertion, so Momo carries him back to the hideout. There, they find Kido, Shintaro, Konoha, and Marry recovering from their trip out to the mountains, and Kido tells them that "Operation: Conquer Kagerou Daze" is beginning.
