Geld is a male ogre–orc hybrid and the central Orc Lord of the Great Famine incident in the light novel and anime series “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime,” where he leads an enormous orc uprising and is ultimately defeated by Rimuru Tempest.
Geld begins as the leader of the surrounding orc tribes, driven to desperation by a catastrophic famine.
He is named “Geld” and elevated to the role of Orc Lord by the majin Gelmud, whom he reveres as a foster father.
As Orc Lord, he commands an army of roughly 200,000 orcs.
This army devastates multiple settlements, including an ogre village and various other monster territories.
Geld’s rise and fall occur primarily in the second volume of the original light novel.
His story arc is closely tied to the themes of hunger, sin, and redemption.
Uprising During the Great Famine
A massive famine breaks out in the region, pushing the orc race to the brink of extinction.
To survive, Geld rallies the nearby orc tribes and organizes them into a unified military force.
Under his leadership, the orcs begin a large-scale campaign of conquest and predation.
Their march quickly turns into a regional disaster, as they consume all organic matter and monsters in their path.
Relationship with Gelmud
Geld is named and empowered by the majin Gelmud, who treats him as a pawn for his own ambitions.
Geld, however, comes to respect Gelmud deeply and regards him as a foster father.
Gelmud’s goal is to create a powerful monster capable of evolving into a Demon Lord.
To fulfill Gelmud’s wishes, Geld obeys his guidance even when it leads to extreme violence and self-destruction.
Military Campaigns
As the Orc Lord, Geld leads an army of about 200,000 orcs.
With this overwhelming force, he annihilates an ogre village and threatens many other monster communities.
The orc army eventually advances into the lizardman kingdom.
There, they clash with the lizardman forces and with the reinforcements led by Rimuru Tempest and his allies.
Battle Against Rimuru Tempest
In the decisive battle, Geld faces Rimuru Tempest and the coalition of monsters allied with him.
Despite his numerical advantage and overwhelming hunger-driven power, he is gradually pushed into a corner.
When Gelmud’s plan reaches its peak, Geld chooses to devour Gelmud himself.
By doing so, he fulfills Gelmud’s wish and triggers his evolution into a Demon Lord–class being, known as a “Demon Lord seed.”
Even after this evolution, Geld cannot overcome Rimuru.
Rimuru’s unique skill “Predator” ultimately devours Geld, absorbing his body and powers.
Death and Emotional Resolution
As he is consumed by Rimuru’s Predator ability, Geld confronts the weight of his sins and the devastation he caused.
He finds peace in the idea that Rimuru will carry the burden of those sins and the responsibility for the orcs’ future.
Geld’s final moments are marked by relief rather than resentment.
He disappears while feeling that his crimes, his people, and even his foster father’s wishes have all been accepted and shouldered by Rimuru.
Orc Lord
Geld is a special variant of the orc race known as the Orc Lord.
An Orc Lord is an extremely rare, aberrant individual that appears spontaneously only once every few centuries.
The appearance of an Orc Lord is a catastrophic event for the surrounding world.
Because of its unique abilities, it turns entire regions into barren wastelands as it devours everything around it.
Unique Skill: “Starved”
Geld possesses a unique, race-specific skill called “Starved,” which manifests only in certain generations of orcs as a kind of skip-generation inheritance.
This skill is the core of his power and the main reason he becomes such a large-scale disaster.
“Starved” grants him an endless, maddening sense of hunger that can never be fully satisfied.
It also allows him to convert anything he eats—monsters, organic material, and more—directly into energy.
In addition, “Starved” lets Geld pass on the abilities of devoured monsters to the orcs under his command.
Through this, his entire army grows steadily stronger as they consume their enemies, turning them into a rolling, ever-growing calamity.
Demon Lord Seed Evolution
By devouring Gelmud, Geld ascends to the level of a Demon Lord seed.
This evolution massively amplifies his physical capabilities and magical power.
However, this power boost also intensifies his hunger and the destructive nature of his existence.
Instead of saving his people, the evolution pushes the orc disaster to an even more dangerous scale.
The emergence of an Orc Lord like Geld is considered a large-scale disaster in the world.
An Orc Lord and its army devour all nearby monsters and organic matter, leaving nothing but ruin behind.
Historically, earlier Orc Lords did not regard humans as prey.
Because of this, humans were able to mobilize their forces fully and successfully subjugate every past Orc Lord.
Geld’s case continues that pattern of disaster-level threat and eventual subjugation.
However, unlike previous cases, his defeat comes not at human hands but at the hands of Rimuru Tempest, who chooses to bear Geld’s sins and responsibilities after his death.
Geld’s character embodies desperate survival, loyalty, and tragic responsibility.
He is driven by an overwhelming need to save his starving people, even at the cost of becoming a monster in the eyes of the world.
His devotion to Gelmud is genuine, despite Gelmud’s manipulative intentions.
Geld’s final act of devouring Gelmud is less about betrayal and more about fulfilling a twisted wish born from that loyalty.
In death, he shows deep remorse and concern for the orcs he led into catastrophe.
The fact that he finds comfort in Rimuru carrying his sins adds a layer of bittersweet redemption to his story.
