Siune is a female Undine mage and member of the Sleeping Knights guild in the Sword Art Online series, known for her role as the group’s sole mage and later as its third leader.
Siune plays a support and backup role during boss battles, using her magic to keep her party alive and fighting.
In the real world, she is a half-Korean girl living in Japan, battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
She initially resigns herself to wanting a peaceful, painless death.
Through her interactions with Yuuki, however, she regains the will to fight her illness and not give up.
In the virtual world, Siune appears as an Undine woman and is visually associated with water-element magic.
Her demeanor is calm, gentle, and considerate, fitting her role as a support mage who protects her allies from the rear.
She is empathetic and emotionally resilient, shaped by her long-term illness and hospital life.
Her kindness and thoughtfulness allow her to connect deeply with other patients and party members, and she is willing to step into danger for the sake of peace and understanding.
In reality, Siune has a Korean father living in Japan, making her half-Korean.
She suffers from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a serious blood cancer that drastically limits her physical freedom.
After undergoing chemotherapy, her disease once entered remission.
Unfortunately, the leukemia later relapsed, leaving her health in a precarious and uncertain state.
At one point, exhausted by treatment and fear, she wished only for a calm, painless end to her life.
Spending time with Yuuki, who continues to live fully despite her own critical illness, inspires Siune to change her mindset and fight on rather than surrender.
Soon after Yuuki’s death, Siune is given an experimental drug as part of a clinical trial.
The drug has a dramatic effect: her leukemia cells suddenly disappear, bringing about a stunning medical turnaround.
Following her recovery, Siune attends Yuuki’s funeral in the real world.
There, she meets Asuna Yuuki face-to-face, connecting the bonds formed in the virtual world with their lives outside it.
Siune is introduced as the only mage in the Sleeping Knights, a small guild composed mainly of terminally ill or seriously ill patients.
During boss fights, she serves as the primary backup, using healing and support magic to sustain her allies.
Her position at the rear does not make her passive; she plays a crucial strategic role.
Her support enables the frontline fighters, including Yuuki, to push their limits during difficult raids.
By the time of the Alicization arc, Siune has become the third leader of the Sleeping Knights.
This leadership role reflects the trust her companions place in her, as well as her growth from a patient resigned to death into someone who takes responsibility for others.
During the Underworld War in the Alicization storyline, Siune responds to Lisbeth’s call for help.
She travels to the Underworld along with the other Sleeping Knights to support Asuna Yuuki and the Human Empire forces.
Siune’s bilingual ability becomes especially important in this conflict.
Because she understands Korean, she tries to resolve the misunderstanding among the Chinese and Korean players who have been manipulated into fighting on the wrong side.
These players have been deceived and incited by PoH (also known as Vassago Cassals).
Recognizing the danger, Siune attempts to communicate with them, explain the truth, and calm the situation to prevent further tragedy.
However, PoH’s malicious strategies and lies are too effective.
Despite Siune’s sincere efforts, her attempt to dispel the players’ misunderstanding ultimately fails, and the large-scale conflict continues.
Even in failure, her actions highlight her courage and deep desire for peace.
She does not hesitate to step between opposing sides, relying on her language skills and empathy rather than violence.
In the original web version of the story, the character was named “Cien.”
However, this name does not exist as a real Korean female given name.
For the light novel (bunkō) edition, the author revised the name to “Siune,” based on the Korean female name “Si-eun” (施恩).
This change makes her name feel more authentic and culturally grounded, reflecting her Korean heritage more convincingly.
