Hisoka Morow

The 287th Hunter Exam Passer. Phantom Troupe Member No. 4 (joined under false pretenses, left during the series). A Transmutation-type Nen user.

Born on June 6, age unknown. Approximately 190 cm tall. Blood type B.

A mysterious magician. Usually has a unique hairstyle resembling slicked-back hair, initially orange-blond but later changes to light green. Has a teardrop-shaped paint under his left eye and a star-shaped paint under his right eye, giving him a clown-like appearance.

A major character appearing in almost the entire series except for the Chimera Ant arc.

Uses playing cards (in the novel version, they are made of steel) as weapons, and his speech often ends with suits (such as "♡" or "♧").

He is the person who came up with the "Nen Ability Personality Diagnosis Method" (according to him, "it's baseless like blood type personality diagnosis"), and many characters make statements based on his diagnostic method.

His past and background are completely unknown. He is a liar with a whimsical personality, extremely quick-witted, and his humanity is elusive. A combat fanatic with a genius-level combat sense, he feels supreme ecstasy in fighting and killing strong opponents he likes. He gets excited and intoxicated just by imagining such scenes. He joined the Phantom Troupe and killed members just to fight Chrollo, showing no concern for getting injured in battle, which is beyond normal. He feels sexual excitement from the growth of Gon and Killua, often exhibiting behaviors akin to arousal. Not bound by money, duty, or organizational logic, he will ally with anyone if it satisfies his desires and won't betray them until the matter is settled. He understands that he is the strongest and is solitary, with no sense of belonging or loyalty to others. For people he likes, such as Gon and Killua, he will protect them even if it causes him disadvantage, but this is because he wants to kill them himself after they grow.

In the Hunter Exam a year before the main story, he achieved excellent results, almost guaranteed to pass, but was disqualified for half-killing an examiner he didn't like. In the following 287th Hunter Exam, he met Gon, recognized his talent, and decided to wait for his future growth to fight and kill him. After creating the opportunity for Gon and Killua to learn Nen at the Heavens Arena, he participated in the Yorknew City auction raid as a member of the Phantom Troupe. Meanwhile, he allied with Kurapika to create a chance to fight Chrollo, providing information and more. After the Yorknew battle, with Chrollo's Nen abilities sealed by Kurapika's Nen, he joined Greed Island on Chrollo's request to find an Exorcist. After assisting Gon and others in collecting cards, he negotiated with the Exorcist. Behind the scenes of the Chimera Ant arc, he was repeatedly involved in a chase with Chrollo. He reappeared in the Chairman Election arc, seeking new opponents and appearing at the Hunter Association. There, he reunited with Illumi, who requested his assistance in killing Alluka. He ambushed and defeated the Hunters dispatched to arrest Illumi.

Later, he had a deathmatch with Chrollo at the Heavens Arena and was defeated, but he had given his aura the command to "massage the lungs and heart after death," allowing him to revive after the match. He declared a killing game against the Troupe, restrained Machi without killing her to use as a messenger, killed Kortopi and Shalnark, and had Illumi join the Troupe. He is believed to be hiding on the Black Whale, but has not been found. When he died, his face was burned, and he lost his left hand and right ankle, which he compensates for with Nen.

During the match with Chrollo at the Heavens Arena, his full name was revealed in the match commentary.

The short story "Boy H" by Sui Ishida features Hisoka as the protagonist during his childhood.

Bungee Gum

A Transmutation-type ability that changes aura into a substance with the properties of both rubber and gum. It sticks like gum and stretches like rubber.

Hisoka can attach or remove it, stretch or shrink it at will, and can maintain a stretched state or suddenly shrink it at his chosen timing. When used away from Hisoka's body, it breaks if stretched over 10 meters, but its adhesiveness can be maintained even when detached from his body. Since it is aura itself, it can be made invisible with "In."

The principle is simple, but it is an ability without restrictions. For example, when used to restrict an opponent's movement by attaching it somewhere on their body and pulling, Hisoka can either throw the gum-like aura directly or attach it when touching with his hand, so both Hisoka and the aura must be watched out for. Guarding is meaningless as it can just be attached to the guarded part, making it practically unavoidable, a "much nastier ability than expected." Furthermore, it can be combined with various small tools like playing cards or handkerchiefs, and even stones lying around can become deadly weapons, boasting tremendous versatility.

The name comes from a candy Hisoka liked as a child.

Texture Surprise

A Transmutation-type ability that changes aura into various textures to cover and reproduce the surface of objects.

It can reproduce over 1000 textures freely. It can also display text, making its application range wide. It can only reproduce two-dimensional objects, and if touched, it will be revealed as fake by the feel (except when reproducing the same material, like reproducing "a paper with text" on paper), but Hisoka loves deception and uses it despite the risk. It is essentially a hidden ability, and in the Troupe, only Machi knows it as "used for protecting wounds with a few types at most."

The name comes from a candy with a bonus that was popular when Hisoka was a child.
