He is from Whale Island and grew up surrounded by nature from a young age. He was taught about the harshness of nature and his father Ging by Kite, whom he met in his childhood, and developed an admiration for Hunters. Just before turning 12, like his biological father Ging, he left Whale Island to find his father and fulfill his dream by taking the Hunter Exam. Ging has not spoken about his mother, and details are unknown, but in the first anime adaptation, his biological mother is set as the late sister of his father's cousin, Mito.
