Character Setting

Edit

Tarmiel is one of the Four Archangels of the Goddess Clan in The Seven Deadly Sins, known for his three-headed form, cheerful personality, and the Grace “Ocean,” which lets him control the sea and liquefy his body.

Tarmiel is a high-ranking member of the Goddess Clan and one of the Four Archangels serving the Supreme Deity.

Unlike most goddesses, he has three heads and six wings, giving him a distinctly inhuman appearance.

He manifests in the modern era by possessing the body of the defrocked priest Dubs.

Despite his bizarre look, he is bright, talkative, and surprisingly friendly.

Tarmiel is deeply moved by the kindness of Elizabeth Liones, much like Sariel, and chooses to cooperate with her.

However, he is emotionally soft toward those he considers kin, which becomes his greatest weakness in battle.

During the fight with Mael (formerly known as Estarossa under altered memories), his inability to stay ruthless at a critical moment causes a breakdown in their coordination.

This mistake allows Mael to absorb additional Commandments.

Tarmiel attempts to reach Mael with words and persuade him to stop.

He is killed when Mael, empowered by the absorbed Commandments, fires a devastating light beam that strikes him directly.

His Grace is called Ocean, granting him overwhelming water-based powers and near-complete immunity to physical attacks.

His voice actors are Satoshi Tsuruoka and Ryota Suzuki (when possessing Dubs).

Tarmiel has three faces: one in the center, a youthful male face on one side, and an elderly male face on the other.

He also has six wings, marking him as an exceptional goddess apart from the Supreme Deity.

Among all goddesses, he is the only one besides the Supreme Deity known to have more than four wings.

His multi-faced, multi-winged form reinforces his status as a unique and powerful being.

Despite his intimidating form, Tarmiel’s personality is comparatively light-hearted.

He jokes, chats, and shows an easygoing demeanor, which contrasts with his fearsome combat abilities.

He cares deeply for his fellow goddesses and allies, especially Sariel and other members of the Goddess Clan.

This compassion, however, often stops him from delivering lethal blows when necessary.

Ocean is a Grace granted directly by the Supreme Deity.

It allows Tarmiel to generate and control vast quantities of seawater as well as to transform his body into liquid.

By liquefying his body, Tarmiel can nullify most physical attacks, letting blows and weapons simply pass through him.

He can also shape water into offensive and defensive forms, from towering pillars to all-consuming seas.

This Grace is powerful enough to reshape a battlefield into a limitless ocean.

When combined with Sariel’s Grace, it can create a deadly storm realm that annihilates enemies at the molecular level.

Holy Ark

Holy Ark is the standard Goddess Clan light technique, which Tarmiel can use in a slightly different form.

Instead of enveloping the target and disintegrating them with light, he launches it as an energy projectile.

Omega Ark

Omega Ark is an amplified version of Holy Ark that unleashes a gigantic mass of destructive light.

Ten Commandments–class demons can barely endure it; anything weaker is utterly erased without a trace.

Persistent Saint

Persistent Saint releases multiple tracking or following light orbs that pursue the target.

Tarmiel’s version produces smaller projectiles than Sariel’s but remains highly dangerous.

Holy Light (Ark Beam)

Holy Light (Ark Beam) is a destructive beam of concentrated light fired from the mouth of the youthful side head.

In the anime, it is released with the incantation translated as “Break.”

This beam slices through enemies and structures with pure divine energy.

It serves as one of his straightforward but immensely powerful ranged attacks.

Holy Guard (Ark Shield)

Holy Guard (Ark Shield) is a circular shield of light projected from the mouth of the elderly side head.

It repels incoming attacks and can deflect or neutralize many forms of energy.

In the anime, it is invoked with a chant translated as “Herak.”

The shield can be layered or combined with his other techniques for robust defense.

Ocean

Ocean is the core manifestation of his Grace.

Tarmiel can flood an area with a boundless sea, turning the battlefield into open water with no land in sight.

Within this environment, he has a massive advantage, moving and attacking freely while opponents struggle.

His control extends from gentle currents to crushing waves.

Piercing Water Pillar

Piercing Water Pillar is a technique that launches a colossal pillar of water upward like a geyser.

The pillar has immense piercing power, functioning almost like a gigantic, high-pressure lance.

Its power is such that it can penetrate Estarossa after he has absorbed two Commandments and reached a combat power on par with Tarmiel himself.

This makes it one of Tarmiel’s most fearsome single-target attacks.

Enlil’s Divine Punishment

Enlil’s Divine Punishment is a combination technique performed together with Sariel, merging their Graces Ocean and Tornado.

They create a sealed space where the enemy is trapped with no escape.

Inside this space, Tarmiel’s Ocean covers everything in a limitless sea without any land.

Sariel’s Tornado then merges with the waters, generating an enormous, unending superstorm.

From this storm, vast bolts of lightning are born, striking repeatedly at the trapped enemy.

These divine bolts break down even Demon Clan members at the molecular level, preventing regeneration.

The relentless, concentrated bombardment of lightning is akin to being judged by the heavens.

The attack’s overwhelming and inescapable nature justifies its name as a literal “divine punishment.”

3,000 Years Ago – The Original Holy War

Tarmiel first appears in the storyline during the flashback arc set 3,000 years before the main events.

At this time, he serves as one of the Goddess Clan’s Four Archangels, a key figure in the war against the Demon Clan.

He fights alongside Sariel and Ludociel, leading the goddess forces.

His powers and status make him one of the most feared enemies of the Demon Clan.

Reappearance in the Present Era

In the present time, 3,000 years later, Tarmiel returns by possessing the body of the fallen priest Dubs.

He appears alongside Sariel and Ludociel when the Goddess Clan decides to intervene more directly in the renewed conflict.

Their goal is to annihilate the Demon Clan’s elite unit, the Ten Commandments, in one sweeping strike.

Tarmiel joins the subjugation forces led by Howzer and contributes greatly to the new Holy War.

Although an archangel, he grows to respect and cooperate with human allies and Elizabeth Liones.

Elizabeth’s compassion and determination impact him deeply, pushing him to act beyond the rigid mindset of the Goddess Clan.

Battle with Estarossa / Mael

Tarmiel is heavily involved in the conflict surrounding Estarossa, who is later revealed to be Mael of the Four Archangels whose memories were altered by Gowther’s forbidden spell.

When Estarossa kidnaps Elizabeth, Tarmiel heads to the Sky Theater ruins to rescue her.

He fights there alongside King, Derieri, and Sariel against Estarossa.

As the spell on Estarossa breaks, his true identity as Mael resurfaces, but his mind remains unstable.

Derieri devises a plan to subdue Mael and recover the Commandments he has absorbed.

Tarmiel agrees to cooperate, using his power to restrict Mael’s movements while Derieri attacks.

However, as Derieri continues striking Mael, Tarmiel struggles to watch his former comrade being beaten.

His emotional attachment overwhelms his resolve, and he falters, stopping the restraint.

This moment of hesitation becomes a fatal mistake.

Mael seizes the opportunity, kills Derieri, and further absorbs the Commandments, becoming drastically more powerful.

Tarmiel and Sariel try desperately to stop or reason with Mael.

Tarmiel, in particular, pleads with him to cease his rampage, clinging to the memory of the Mael he once knew.

Mael, consumed by power and turmoil, unleashes a massive beam of light empowered by the Commandments.

Tarmiel is struck directly by the attack and dies, unable to withstand the enhanced divine-demonic power.

His death underscores both his strength and his tragic flaw: his heart is too kind to be truly ruthless, even in war.

Tarmiel’s end is a poignant moment, showing the cost of compassion in a world consumed by a holy war.
