Character Setting

Edit

Midori Ukai is a 33-year-old former Air Self-Defense Force officer and Tsubame Kamoi’s ex-superior. Known for her strong but quirky personality, she left her job to follow Tsubame. She now lives with Misha Takanashi and runs a house cleaning business next door. Midori is a self-proclaimed masochist with a big imagination and speaks with a Kansai accent when nervous. While she’s extremely skilled at cleaning, her cooking is intentionally bad because she enjoys the reactions. She comes from a rich family that owns a luxury hotel, and her unique habits and devotion to Tsubame often land her in odd situations. Despite her odd traits, her straightforward attitude makes her a trusted friend, especially to Misha.

Midori Ukai has short black hair, which looks boyish if she keeps quiet. When she used to work as a maid, she wore gothic lolita outfits and a silver twin-tail wig just to make Tsubame Kamoi happy.

She is considered beautiful, especially with her natural look.

She prefers to look plain, but sometimes dresses oddly to amuse others.

Midori is a self-admitted masochist (she enjoys difficult treatment and complicated situations).

She is imaginative and tends to daydream.

When she gets nervous, her speech slips into a Kansai accent.

She delights in being treated coldly by Tsubame and feels joy when she is worried about her—even small acts of care make her happy.

Her personality can be a challenge even to Tsubame, who sometimes gets tired of her quirks.

Despite all this, Midori is straightforward, honest, and easy to talk to.

She is very practical, does not get sidetracked in conversations, and is good at handling trouble, partly due to her unique perspective.

Midori comes from a wealthy family that owns a luxury hotel.

She has a younger brother who is 16 years younger than her.

Due to her complicated attitude, her parents told her she could live however she wanted.

Midori believed for years she was switched at birth because her life was so perfect.

She joined the Air Self-Defense Force because she thought the training would be tough.

She met Tsubame Kamoi in the security dog unit. Midori was overwhelmed by Tsubame’s powerful presence and fell in love when she saw Tsubame easily tame the dogs she had worked hard to train.

Her admiration led her to do strange things, like waiting in the dog kennels for Tsubame, which made her the “lowest” ranked in the self-defense force—lower than the dogs.

Midori has excellent skills in cleaning, organizing, and laundry.

However, her cooking is terrible by choice.

She takes pride in making food taste bad so she, or others, can suffer and see their reactions.

She is extremely tough mentally and can handle difficult or dirty jobs that most people avoid.

She even handles cleaning houses after someone passes away or messy homes, which other businesses turn down.

Her abilities are valued in the cleaning industry because of this fearless attitude.

Midori owns a security dog related to guard dogs and can use it whenever needed.

  • Tsubame Kamoi: Midori’s main focus in life. She calls her “Second Lieutenant” (her old rank) and is obsessed with being close to her, even quitting her job to stay nearby.
  • Misha Takanashi: Trusts Midori and calls her “Midorin.” They often talk as equals, and Misha finds her easy to approach because Midori is not focused on looks and always has time to listen. Misha sometimes feels sorry for Midori’s awkward, unlucky side and treats her as a helpful friend.
  • Midori’s Family: Her parents and younger brother give her freedom due to her complicated personality.

Joining the Self-Defense Force

Midori Ukai became a Self-Defense Force member because she wanted tough training.

She quickly became known as a strange but determined person.

She worked in the security dog unit and met Tsubame Kamoi there.

Falling for Tsubame Kamoi

Midori was amazed by Tsubame’s strong aura and her ability to control powerful dogs effortlessly.

She fell in love with Tsubame at first sight.

To get closer to her, Midori did silly things like hiding in the dog kennels, making her rank even lower than the dogs.

Becoming a Maid and Cleaning Expert

After leaving the Self-Defense Force to follow Tsubame, Midori started working as the maid in the Takanashi family’s home.

She improved her cleaning skills there.

Even though she stayed in a luxury hotel suite, she slept in a tent and sleeping bag on the floor because being too comfortable made her feel weird and even gave her nosebleeds.

Starting Her Own Cleaning Business

After one month as a maid, Midori quit and decided to use her savings (from her severance pay) to try foreign exchange trading.

Surprisingly, she earned more money and used it to start her own house cleaning company right next to the Takanashi home—just to stay close to Tsubame.

She specializes in very tough cleaning jobs, like messy homes and places where someone passed away.

This made her popular with other cleaning businesses that did not want such hard jobs.

Running into Misha and Others

To get snacks from Misha, Midori offers her a cut from her payments.

She often stops by and becomes a regular visitor.

Hearing that Yui Morikawa posts dream stories about Misha, Midori starts writing her own about herself and Tsubame.

But her stories always end badly, falling into weird “gaps in the world”—showing her gloomy imagination.

Tsubame finds these stories strange.

Chasing Thrills in Life

Midori seeks excitement, so she often spends money on things like extra products from door-to-door sales.

She even buys rundown buildings or mountains just to pay property taxes.

However, these risky buys usually work out—like the building becomes useful for Misha’s secret fireworks, and the mountain goes up in value because of area development.

Midori is called “the most maiden-like character” by the manga author.

Despite her awkward and self-defeating ways, she is very lucky with money.

“P-please, call me Midorin…”
