Character Setting

Edit

Daiki Kayashima is a supporting character in *Hana-Kimi*, a second-year student who is classmates with Mizuki Ashiya and the dorm roommate of Shūichi Nakatsu, known for his unusually strong spiritual sensitivity and ability to read human auras.

Daiki is typically stone-faced, quiet, and consistently calm.

Compared with the louder students around him, he stays levelheaded, though he can be unintentionally blunt or odd in his phrasing.

He possesses exceptionally strong spiritual abilities, including seeing and communicating with spirits.

He sometimes demonstrates near-supernatural techniques such as forming a spirit barrier around himself or deploying a protective ward.

Daiki’s default expression is serious, and he often communicates with minimal words.

Despite his cool demeanor, he can be considerate and gently supportive when it matters.

He is Nakatsu’s roommate, and Nakatsu became the first person Daiki could truly call a friend.

Because of that bond, Daiki listens to Nakatsu’s worries, encourages him when he is down, and also teases him by “commentating” on his aura.

Daiki can distinguish differences between male and female auras.

For that reason, he knew from Mizuki’s first day as a transfer student that she was female, but chose to keep it secret until just before she left the school.

Daiki can see spirits, speak with them, and perform exorcism-like practices.

His associated spirits are named Pochi and Tama.

He can also see a person’s aura color and infer their emotional state, effectively “reading” what is in their heart.

He is somewhat sloppy in everyday habits and even counts people by the number of auras rather than by faces.

Daiki is highly skilled at yoga and bowling.

His parents loved bowling, and he reportedly achieved a family tournament victory in elementary school.

Three years later, he works part-time as a sommelier.

Academically, he is on the same level as Izumi Sano and hopes to study folklore at university, joking that he might train at Mount Osore.

A boy onmyoji from the third dorm, Makoto Ichijo, unilaterally views Daiki as a rival.

However, Makoto’s own spiritual ability is described as close to nonexistent.

Daiki’s name is taken from Kayashima Station on the Keihan Main Line, located across Kadoma and Neyagawa in Osaka Prefecture.

It also references the large camphor tree that famously grows through the station platform.

His image flower is the gentian.

Audio Drama and Anime

In drama CD form, he is voiced by Kentaro Ito.

In the television anime, he is voiced by Koki Uchiyama.

Japanese Live-Action Drama (2007)

He is portrayed as a “mysterious, airy” handsome boy with strong spiritual sensitivity.

Because he appeared repeatedly in places where Minami Nanba was guiding Mizuki, she initially mistook him for a ghost.

He often makes a distinctive pose when reading auras, holding both hands beside his face, and he does it even when he is not reading anything.

He can sense Kyogo Sekime’s illusion techniques, and at a joint mixer he was the only one to openly marvel at them.

He can perform purification, but an early attempt backfires and causes a worse spirit to attach.

Later, he successfully drives away a female spirit that had attached to Nakatsu, though it then attaches to Sekime again.

He is implied to be the only one who knew the truth behind a delayed revelation connected to a Tanabata legend.

When he appears, a dedicated sound effect plays, and sometimes even a personal background track is used.

His dorm room is shared with Nakatsu and is next to the room of Mizuki and Izumi.

He can be extremely direct, once cooling the mood by saying “Were you rejected?” and “That’s too bad,” prompting Nakatsu to complain that Daiki’s words are the coldest of all.

He had been bullied in the past because of his strange abilities.

Nakatsu defended him without hesitation and became his friend, which led Daiki to advise Nakatsu later to be more honest with himself.

He watches a romance reality show and sometimes uses the phrase “the start of turbulence.”

He claims no romantic interest in anyone, yet near the end he somehow ends up on good terms with Julia Maxwell.

At Mizuki’s farewell, she thanks him for the warmth he gave her.

Daiki reads her aura as “good,” saying it is strong enough that she will be fine wherever she goes.

Japanese Live-Action Drama (2011)

This version keeps him calm, mature, and observant, frequently offering Mizuki and Nakatsu accurate advice.

When reading auras, he uses a different pose: right hand to the ear and left hand raised.

He once determined relay team order by concentrating, producing balanced teams.

In the past he hid his powers because being feared or approached out of curiosity was bothersome, but Nakatsu’s acceptance persuaded him to be open about what he could see.

In one incident, Senri Nakao and Wataru Nihonbashi witness him speaking with spirits and wrongly accuse him of mischief.

In reality, Yujiro was the one making the mess.

He often ends up covering for Nakatsu’s absent-minded moments and explains that Nakatsu is not “spacey,” but rather spends too much energy on others and neglects himself.

Nakatsu also repeatedly jumps onto him in an overly familiar way.

He recognizes Mizuki as female from the beginning due to aura differences, but decides it changes nothing and does not interfere.

He describes her aura as “mint green” at one point and later compares it to the sky itself.

In the finale, Mizuki leaves a recorded message describing Daiki as someone like a guardian spirit who is always nearby.
