Shunji Fujimura

Shunji Fujimura was born on December 8, 1934, in Kamakura, Kanagawa, Japan.

He grew up in a family with a strict father, the president of Subaru Kogyo, and a mother described as generous and warm.

He attended Gyosei Academy from elementary through high school, where he nurtured his creative aspirations.

Originally aiming to become a stage director, he entered Waseda University but left before graduating, dissatisfied with its academic environment.

Fujimura then graduated from Toho Performing Arts School's dance department as part of its first class.

Fujimura started his career in 1960, joining the Nichigeki Dancing Team and traveling around Europe.

Exposure to Western performance inspired him to switch from being a dancer to a choreographer after returning to Japan.

He made a name as a choreographer, even working on popular TV programs like "8 O'Clock! All Together!" and iconic commercial dances.

Despite rumors, Fujimura clarified that he did not choreograph the famous "Hige Dance" but did work on other notable routines.

His nickname, "Ohyoi," comes from his habit of dodging on-screen appearances—he would "hyoi," or slip away, from camera angles while working as a choreographer.

As an actor, he played diverse roles on television, in films, and on stage.

His laid-back, dry wit and natural comedic timing made him a staple on variety shows, while his later years were defined by portrays of wise, gentle elderly men.

He became especially popular with younger generations for his role as the butler Tanaka in the "Black Butler" anime series, which was partly modeled after him.
