I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in the Real World, Too is a Japanese light novel series written by Miku and illustrated by Rein Kuwashima, following an abused boy who gains overwhelming powers by accessing a mysterious house connected to another world.
The franchise includes the main light novel, multiple spin-off novels, a manga adaptation, a television anime series, a radio show, and a browser MMORPG.
The story was first published as a web novel on the user-generated fiction site Kakuyomu starting March 25, 2017.
It won the Grand Prize in the SF and Contemporary Fantasy category at the 3rd Kakuyomu Web Novel Contest in 2018, leading to print publication.
The light novels have been released under Kadokawa’s Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint since December 20, 2018.
As of October 2025, the main series has 19 volumes in print.
The series’ worldwide total in print across all related titles has surpassed 4 million copies as of July 2025.
The work is commonly abbreviated as “Iseleve.”
A manga adaptation illustrated by Kazuto Miwakawa began serialization online in 2019 and is collected under the Dengeki Comics NEXT label.
A television anime adaptation by the studio Millepensee aired in 2023, with a new TV special scheduled for broadcast in March 2026.
The story jumps between two main settings: a modern real-world Japan and a high-fantasy parallel world filled with monsters, magic, and ancient heroes.
A mysterious hidden door inside an inherited house connects these two worlds, allowing the protagonist to travel back and forth.
The fantasy world features kingdoms such as the Arselia Kingdom, powerful monsters, godlike “Holy” beings, and corrupt “Evil” forces.
Power is expressed through game-like status windows, levels, skills, and highly unusual items left behind by an “Ancient Sage.”
In the real world, the story focuses on school life at the elite Osei Academy, the entertainment industry, and family drama.
Events in one world frequently influence the other, causing the protagonist’s fame, relationships, and responsibilities to snowball.
Yūya Tenjō is an overweight and shy boy who suffers relentless bullying at school and emotional abuse from his parents, younger twin brother, and younger sister.
Only his grandfather cares for him, but after the grandfather’s death, Yūya is left completely alone.
One day, following his grandfather’s teachings, Yūya risks himself to protect a girl being harassed by delinquents in front of a convenience store.
That night, overwhelmed by despair, he hits the mirror in his tiny home, accidentally breaking it and revealing a hidden door.
Behind the door he discovers a secret basement filled with strange artifacts that his grandfather collected around the world and, most importantly, a portal to another world.
Crossing through, Yūya finds an isolated house that once belonged to a legendary “Ancient Sage,” packed with weapons, items, and documents.
When Yūya casually swings one of the weapons, the Absolute Spear, he instantly acquires powerful combat skills.
Soon he is attacked by monsters, barely survives using the new weapon, and gains massive levels, transforming his once-weak stats into overwhelming numbers.
The sudden level-up rewrites his body.
He goes to sleep in his familiar overweight form and wakes up the next morning as an extremely handsome, well-built young man.
Yūya returns to his old school and neighborhood and quickly becomes the subject of stunned looks and newfound attention.
However, his years of abuse have left him pessimistic and with low self-esteem, so he struggles to accept kind treatment at face value.
The girl he saved from delinquents, Kaori Hōjō, turns out to be the daughter of the chairman of Osei Academy, a prestigious private school.
She tracks Yūya down, recognizes him by his eyes despite his changed body, and encourages him to transfer to Osei Academy.
At Osei Academy, Yūya gradually makes friends and starts to experience a normal, supportive school life for the first time.
Meanwhile, he continues exploring the other world, hunting monsters, raising his level, and discovering more of the Sage’s secrets.
In the other world’s Arselia Kingdom, Yūya saves Lexia von Arselia, a princess with uncontrollable magical power whose mixed heritage causes some nobles to despise her.
Lexia falls in love with him at first sight and impulsively proposes, intertwining Yūya with the politics and dangers of the Arselia royal family.
Yūya also becomes involved in a larger conflict between “Holy” beings, who protect the world, and “Evil” entities, who twist life and power for destruction.
Various characters attempt to recruit or manipulate him, but his empathy and stubborn kindness push the story toward protecting friends in both worlds.
Yūya Tenjō
Yūya Tenjō is the protagonist of the series and a first-year high school student.
He was born chubby and physically weak, which led to constant bullying by classmates and severe emotional abuse by his own family.
Despite his circumstances, Yūya internalizes his grandfather’s teachings: help people in need and cherish those who are kind to you.
This stubborn kindness survives all his hardships and becomes the emotional core of the story.
After discovering the other world and the Sage’s house, Yūya’s stats skyrocket from constant monster battles.
His body changes overnight into a tall, handsome, and athletic young man with no apparent flaws.
In the real world, this transformation opens doors: a prestigious school, modeling offers, and genuine friendships.
However, Yūya’s self-image remains fragile; he constantly undervalues himself and has trouble believing he is truly liked.
He is extremely dense about romance.
Even direct actions, such as Luna kissing him, leave him confused about their emotional meaning.
Yūya is also gentle with monsters and animals, befriending powerful creatures like Night and Akatsuki.
His compassionate nature often leads him to help strangers, whether they are classmates, celebrities, or royalty.
Kaori Hōjō
Kaori Hōjō is one of the main heroines and a student council officer at Osei Academy.
She is the daughter of the academy’s chairman, giving her an almost princess-like position at school.
Because of her status, Kaori has few genuine friends and almost no experience with ordinary outings or teenage fun.
Her life changes after Yūya protects her from delinquents at a convenience store.
Unlike everyone else, Kaori recognizes Yūya even after his body transformation, explaining that his eyes are the same.
This deep impression leads her to investigate him and bring him into Osei Academy.
Kaori develops a gentle romantic crush on Yūya and is openly supportive of him in class and in school events.
As she spends more time with him, she gains friends of her own and gets to experience everyday joys she previously missed.
She is secretly terrible at sports and comically clumsy with rackets during tennis, often flinging them across the court by accident.
Later, after discovering the other world through the portal in Yūya’s house, she gains enhanced physical abilities by eating magical food stored in the Sage’s house.
Kaori eventually joins Yūya in exploring the fantasy world.
She meets Lexia and the others and becomes part of the cross-world group dynamic.
Lexia von Arselia
Lexia von Arselia is the princess of the Arselia Kingdom and one of the primary heroines in the fantasy world.
She appears to be in her early teens and has a bright, straightforward personality that often disrupts the decorum around her.
Lexia is half human and half high elf through her mother’s bloodline, which makes her magical power extremely high but difficult to control.
Prejudice within the kingdom causes some nobles to label her blood “tainted,” and she becomes a target of repeated assassination attempts.
While fleeing assassins, Lexia ends up in the forest where Yūya is training and encounters a dangerous monster.
Yūya saves her, and she falls head over heels in love with him on the spot.
Lexia soon re-enters the forest, accompanied by guards, to search for Yūya and gets into trouble again with a goblin horde.
After Yūya rescues her a second time, she spontaneously proposes marriage, overwhelming his shy personality.
When he hesitates, Lexia temporarily agrees to “just be friends,” but she has no intention of giving up on marrying him.
Her impulsive declarations and reckless enthusiasm constantly drag her retinue—and later Yūya—into chaotic situations.
Despite her royal status, Lexia is hopeless at household tasks like cooking.
Her attempt to handle a kitchen knife ends with her swinging it around like a weapon and accidentally throwing it across the room, nearly stabbing Yūya and company.
Luna
Luna is a female assassin who initially belongs to a shadowy guild.
She fights with razor-sharp steel wires and possesses the fearsome nickname “Head Hunter.”
Working under Reigar’s faction, Luna accepts a contract to assassinate Princess Lexia.
During one mission, she enters the forest for what she calls “training,” but in reality she is stalking her target.
There she encounters a powerful group of monsters and is nearly overwhelmed.
Yūya and the magical wolf Night rescue her, and she temporarily tags along with them, grinding levels and sharing camps.
Luna feels strangely at ease with Yūya and Night, which begins to erode her assassin’s resolve.
Her eventual attempt to kill Lexia is thwarted when Yūya and Night intervene, forcing her to confront her own conscience.
Captured rather than killed, Luna is coerced into serving as Lexia’s bodyguard.
She finds herself constantly exasperated by Lexia’s wild behavior but also gradually warms to her.
Later, Luna realizes she has developed romantic feelings for Yūya.
She becomes Lexia’s rival in love, leading to comedic bickering over their shared “ideal man.”
Yuti
Yuti is a girl associated with the “Holy” side who turns into a major antagonist aligned with “Evil.”
She was once the beloved disciple of the legendary “Bow Saint,” who taught her archery and embodied extreme kindness.
The Bow Saint was betrayed and murdered by humans, shattering Yuti’s trust in humanity.
Consumed by grief and rage, she accepts the influence of the “Evil” entity known as Kuro, who fuses with her.
Yuti wields the Bow Saint’s techniques with terrifying accuracy.
She can anticipate enemy movements and fire arrows at where they will be, rather than where they are.
She frequently clashes with the Holy beast Usagi and takes an interest in Yūya after learning he can use advanced body-strengthening magic.
When Reigar is exposed and cornered, Yuti tries to eliminate him and anyone else who stands in the way, but Yūya’s interference forces her to retreat.
Later, Yūya, Usagi, Night, and Akatsuki confront Yuti in the forest.
Yuti unleashes her full Evil power and overwhelms Usagi, but Akatsuki’s “Sanctuary” skill neutralizes the Evil influence and allows the group to defeat her.
Rather than killing Yuti, Usagi decides her fate on the spot and has Yūya take custody of her.
She ends up moving to the real world, where she enrolls as a transfer student at Osei Academy and begins a new, uneasy life among humans she once hated.
Night
Night is a magical beast from the other world and one of Yūya’s closest companions.
His species is a Black Fenrir, a feared king of wolves, but when Yūya first meets him he is a wounded black puppy-like creature.
Yūya heals Night’s injuries, and the grateful beast is automatically tamed.
From then on, Night lives with Yūya, traveling between the worlds and acting as both mount and battle partner.
Despite his cute appearance, Night is actually higher level than Yūya when they meet and is incredibly powerful.
He deals massive physical damage and is central to Yūya’s early survival in monster fights.
Night is loyal, proud, and occasionally mischievous.
He bonds well with Akatsuki and even gets training in kick techniques from Usagi.
Akatsuki
Akatsuki is another magical creature tamed by Yūya.
He is a Menghuai, a small red boar-like monster with fluffy fur and a big attitude.
Yūya and Night discover Akatsuki when he casually slips into their bath in the Sage’s house.
Before they know it, the magical contract takes effect, and Akatsuki becomes part of the family.
Akatsuki is sensitive about his appearance and lineage.
If anyone calls him a pig, he explodes in anger, insisting on being acknowledged as a noble Menghuai.
In direct combat he is not particularly impressive compared to Night or Usagi.
However, his unique skill “Sanctuary” can suppress or nullify corrupt Evil power, making him crucial in fights against tainted enemies like Yuti.
Usagi
Usagi is a white rabbit-shaped divine beast and a successor of the “Holy” power.
He belongs to a species called the Kick Rabbit, a variant of the Fighter Rabbit, and holds the titles “Kick Saint” and “Ear Saint.”
Usagi’s physical abilities are overwhelming.
He can obliterate giant, terrifying monsters in a single kick and move faster than eyes can follow.
He is, however, not good with magic, making his skill set heavily focused on melee combat and mobility.
His personality is playful yet serious about his mission to search for a new “Holy” successor.
Usagi wanders into the dangerous Great Magic Region on a whim and encounters Yūya.
Seeing Yūya’s potential, he tries to recruit him as a Holy successor, but Yūya politely declines.
They end up teaching each other instead: Usagi trains Yūya and Night in kicking techniques, while Yūya teaches Usagi body-strengthening magic.
They form a master-disciple relationship both ways, and Yūya refers to him affectionately as “Usagi Master.”
Reigar von Arselia
Reigar von Arselia is a prince of the Arselia Kingdom and Lexia’s relative.
He hides his identity behind a mask and lives in an isolated manor, directing sinister plots from the shadows.
When Lexia’s uncontrolled magic once caused a disastrous outburst, Reigar was caught in it and developed an uncontrollable urge to destroy.
This trauma twists his feelings, and he grows to hate Lexia, blaming her for what happened to him.
Reigar uses loyal subordinates connected to the Cornes noble family to orchestrate attempts on Lexia’s life.
Eventually his hideout is discovered, and he is confronted and restrained.
Just before his arrest is finalized, Yuti interferes in an attempt to protect her own schemes, but she ultimately fails.
During discussions of his punishment, Yūya forces him to drink juice made from the ultra-rare Complete Healing Herb.
The drink heals Reigar’s physical injuries and removes his destructive impulses, though not his crimes.
As a penalty, his lands and mansion are confiscated and awarded to Yūya, giving Yūya an estate in the kingdom.
Other Important Characters in the Real World
Akira Ichinose
Akira Ichinose is a classmate of Yūya at Osei Academy and a self-proclaimed “noble prince.”
He craves attention and constantly tries to act cool, but his actual skills rarely match his boasts.
Because of his dramatic behavior and frequent blunders, the class calls him the “Disappointing Prince.”
Despite his clownish image, he has a good heart and apologizes sincerely when he is at fault, even resorting to full kneeling.
Kaede Kazama
Kaede Kazama is a cheerful girl in Yūya’s class and a member of the track and field club.
With a good figure and a friendly personality, she acts as a mood maker in the classroom.
In P.E. class, she is nearly hit by a misdirected ball and is saved by Yūya, sparking her interest in him.
She often teases and encourages him, adding to his supportive friend circle.
Miu Midō
Miu Midō is a popular fashion model.
She meets Yūya during a photoshoot at a shopping mall, where he is pulled in as a last-minute stand-in model.
Miu is impressed not only by Yūya’s looks but also by his kindness when he protects her from the model Shou’s aggressive advances.
Over time she develops feelings for him and continues to interact with him through work and school events.
Yukine Hyōdō
Yukine Hyōdō is a quiet girl in Yūya’s class.
She speaks little but shows a gentle personality and becomes one of the classmates who quietly supports Yūya.
Rin Kanzaki
Rin Kanzaki is a playful girl in the same class.
She loves teasing people and often teases other girls about their interest in Yūya, while also being emotionally straightforward and loyal to friends.
Ryō Igarashi
Ryō Igarashi is a handsome and athletic boy in Yūya’s class.
He is the first male student to befriend Yūya, helping him out when the class overwhelms him with questions during his trial enrollment.
Although he is talented enough to be recruited by multiple clubs, he cannot choose one.
He ends up as a “return-home club” member, acting as an all-purpose helper for various club activities.
Shingo Kurata
Shingo Kurata is Ryō’s friend and a fellow first-year student who belongs to the game club.
He is deeply knowledgeable about anime, games, and other subcultures and often recommends titles to Ryō.
He befriends Yūya in the school cafeteria.
Shingo becomes a bridge between Yūya and the more otaku side of student life.
Tsukasa Hōjō
Tsukasa Hōjō is Kaori’s father and the chairman of Osei Academy.
He is enormously grateful to Yūya for saving his daughter and believes someone with such character belongs at his school.
Tsukasa strongly supports bringing Yūya into Osei Academy.
He is also quietly strict about evaluating other prospective students, especially those with problematic behavior.
Sawada-sensei
Sawada-sensei is the homeroom teacher of Yūya’s class.
A prominent scientist, she is nonetheless approachable and popular with students because of her clear lectures and easygoing manner.
She is extremely frank about her motives.
For example, she openly tells students to study hard for the sake of her bonus and half-jokingly suggests Yūya marry her and support her because of his cooking skills.
In private life she is quite sloppy and disorganized.
Her shameless honesty and comedic desperation make her a memorable adult character.
Ms. Yomikawa
Ms. Yomikawa is the school nurse at Osei Academy.
She has long black hair covering one eye and maintains a dark, eerie infirmary where strange sounds are rumored to echo from within.
She often wears a mysterious smile and uses suspicious-looking medicine.
Even Yūya, who has calmly faced countless monsters, finds her frightening.
Hikaru
Hikaru is a flamboyant, openly feminine male photographer.
He works with Miu Midō and meets Yūya during the mall photoshoot.
When the original male model Shou is late, Hikaru panics about the schedule.
Spotting Yūya, he drags him into the shoot and immediately recognizes his potential as a model.
Hikaru is clever and improvisational, always ready with backup plans when work falls apart.
He respects Yūya’s decision to decline a modeling career, saying that valuing one’s own feelings is important when young.
Shou
Shou is a handsome but arrogant male model scheduled to work with Miu.
He arrives late to the mall shoot for selfish reasons and shows no real remorse.
He dismisses the job as trivial and then tries to force himself on Miu, ignoring her discomfort.
When Yūya intervenes, Shou attacks him and is effortlessly thrown to the ground.
Hikaru records the entire incident and angrily tells Shou that he is insulting the profession.
Shou leaves without apologizing and is expected to be blacklisted from the industry.
Shachou
Shachou is the president of the talent agency to which Miu belongs.
After seeing the photos from the mall shoot, she becomes extremely interested in Yūya as potential talent.
She attempts to scout Yūya and later even invades Osei Academy’s ball game tournament to photograph him.
Yūya repeatedly declines, insisting he does not want to do anything half-heartedly, which frustrates her persistence.
Kurosawa
Kurosawa is Shachou’s subordinate.
He loyally carries out her orders, including the absurd task of following and filming Yūya at school events.
He does not overstep what he is told to do, keeping to the strict boundaries of his job.
His straight-man reactions contrast with Shachou’s over-the-top enthusiasm.
Delinquents and Family Members
Takeshi Araki
Takeshi Araki is a delinquent and former classmate of Yūya at his old school.
He led the group that bullied Yūya on a daily basis.
When Yūya transforms, Araki fails to recognize him and treats him as a stranger.
Upon learning the handsome newcomer is actually Yūya, he is shocked.
Later, Yūya’s younger siblings hire Araki and the motorcycle gang Red Ogre to assault Osei Academy and take revenge on Yūya.
Yūya defeats them effortlessly, and Araki is arrested and sent to juvenile detention.
Head
Head is the leader of the motorcycle gang Red Ogre; his real name is not revealed.
He commands several delinquents, including Araki, and is feared in the local delinquent scene.
In the original story and manga, he brings his gang to Osei Academy on behalf of Yūya’s siblings to take Yūya down.
Yūya defeats them almost instantly and they are arrested.
In the anime, Head dramatically charges in on his motorcycle to run Yūya down.
Yūya’s agile movements cause Head to lose control and crash, his bike bursting into flames before the police haul him away.
After his humiliating defeat, Head is furious that the gang he built was destroyed by one person.
He later attempts to strangle Yūya’s brother out of rage but is kicked into a tree by Yūya and knocked out.
Yūya’s Younger Siblings: Yōta and Sora Tenjō
Yōta Tenjō and Sora Tenjō are Yūya’s younger twin brother and sister, one year below him in school.
They both inherited their parents’ looks and are considered attractive, unlike Yūya’s earlier appearance.
They are reasonably capable academically and physically but cruelly bully weaker students.
They also join Araki in tormenting Yūya, treating him as inferior and disposable.
When Kaori offers Yūya a path into Osei Academy, the twins demand that she also guarantee their admission in the future.
Kaori has already investigated their behavior and bluntly refuses, citing their numerous acts of bullying and misconduct.
Enraged, Yōta and Sora swear revenge on both Yūya and Kaori.
They hire Red Ogre to attack Osei Academy and try to defeat Yūya by taking Kaori hostage.
Their plan fails.
Yūya defeats the gang easily, and the twins witness Head’s violent anger when he nearly kills Yōta for insulting the gang.
Despite all their past abuse, Yūya cannot abandon his siblings and intervenes to save them.
Moved by his compassion, Yōta and Sora break down in tears and apologize for everything they have done.
They are taken into custody along with the gang and face legal and familial consequences.
In the anime’s final episode, they are shown hiding and watching Yūya from a distance, still too ashamed to face him directly.
Tenjō Grandfather: Yonozuke Tenjō
Yonozuke Tenjō is Yūya’s grandfather and the only family member who truly loved him.
He completely cuts off Yūya’s parents and siblings emotionally after they repeatedly refuse to stop abusing Yūya.
Before his death, Yonozuke carefully arranges his will.
He leaves all of his property and savings exclusively to Yūya and ensures that no other relatives can interfere with the inheritance.
Yonozuke was a close friend of the Ancient Sage from the other world.
He traveled between worlds, providing the Sage with information about Earth and receiving strange items in return.
As a result, the basement of his house is filled with artifacts from the other world and the portal leading to the Sage’s home.
His foresight and kindness indirectly give Yūya the chance to completely change his life.
Kuro
Kuro is a disembodied Evil consciousness.
Originally, it inhabits Yuti, amplifying her hatred and destructive power.
At one point, Kuro tries to transfer from Yuti into Yūya and hijack his body.
However, Yūya’s anger and inner strength prove far greater than expected, causing Kuro to reconsider.
Realizing that Yūya could destroy him if pushed, Kuro becomes more cautious and quiet.
He remains a lurking threat, symbolizing the ever-present influence of Evil in the story.
Kūya Tenjō
Kūya Tenjō appears only in the original novels.
He is a ghost sealed within a scroll among Yonozuke’s collected treasures and claims to be the strongest sorcerer—essentially an onmyoji—from the Heian period.
Kūya is Yūya’s ancestor and once sealed a powerful youkai named Meira at the cost of his life.
Knowing the seal would eventually weaken, he bound his spirit to a scroll to warn his descendants in the future.
Kūya’s obese body during life resembled Yūya’s old appearance.
This was due to a unique constitution where excess spiritual power turned into body fat, and this trait was passed down to Yūya.
Because ordinary people unconsciously reject spiritual power, Yūya’s excess aura made people instinctively dislike him.
This supernatural explanation adds a fantastical reason behind the extreme bullying and avoidance he experienced.
Tenjō Family and Abuse Motif
Yūya’s family, aside from his grandfather, represent systemic emotional and physical abuse.
Their neglect and cruelty frame Yūya’s low self-esteem and fear of kindness.
The later apology from Yōta and Sora and Yūya’s choice to protect them show his capacity for forgiveness.
This contrast between cruelty and compassion is a core emotional tension in the narrative.
The Ancient Sage: Zenovis
Zenovis is a legendary “Ancient Sage,” a human who reached the peak of knowledge and power in the other world.
He is renowned across history, so much so that even gods invited him to ascend, which he refused in favor of remaining human.
Zenovis owned the house that Yūya discovers in the other world, including all the weapons and magical items inside.
He eventually died of old age in a cave near the house, his skeleton left undisturbed after his solitary passing.
Before dying, Zenovis left a will declaring that whoever next visited the house would inherit it and all its contents.
He also used his rare magical circuits to set up a system that would transfer his magical framework to that person.
When Yūya finds Zenovis’s remains, the Sage’s unique magical circuits are transferred to him.
This allows Yūya to perform magic and advanced skills that normal people could never use.
At some point in the story, Yūya time-travels and meets Zenovis in person.
Although Zenovis later forgets the meeting due to temporal corrections, he subconsciously arranges his will to ensure Yūya inherits his legacy.
