Yes! PreCure 5 is the fourth installment and the third generation of the Pretty Cure series, produced by Toei Animation. The anime originally aired in Japan from February 2007 to January 2008, followed by its direct sequel, Yes! PreCure 5 GoGo!, which aired from February 2008 to January 2009. For the first time in the franchise, the core PreCure team expanded from two to five magical girls, each with their own unique powers, personalities, and personal growth arcs. The story unfolds in a picturesque town inspired by European settings, blending slice-of-life school drama with heroic battles against formidable evil organizations.

The story takes place around Saint Lumiere Academy, a large, prestigious school surrounded by a scenic mix of European-style streets and Japanese landmarks.

Key locations include the school, modern city areas, family shops, and the whimsical Palmiere Kingdom—the mystical homeland of the fairy mascots Coco, Natts, and Milk.

The Palmiere Kingdom is vital to the magical lore, ruined by the villainous Nightmare organization and later restored thanks to the efforts of the PreCure team and their fairy allies.

In Yes! PreCure 5 GoGo!, the world expands with the introduction of the Cures' quest for the legendary Cure Rose Garden—said to be the origin of all life and cherished by the mysterious Flora.

Nozomi Yumehara, a cheerful but somewhat dopey second-year middle schooler, stumbles upon a magical artifact, the Dream Collet, and two fairy princes, Coco and Natts.

Tasked with reviving the ruined Palmiere Kingdom, she joins forces with her childhood friend Rin Natsuki, lively new idol Urara Kasugano, gentle upperclassman Komachi Akimoto, and the stoic student council president Karen Minazuki.

Each girl awakens her own PreCure powers, with Nozomi becoming Cure Dream—the team's pink, hope-filled leader.

They collect magical creatures called Pinkies to fill the Dream Collet and fight Nightmare, a shadowy organization led by the cold-hearted Desparaia and her calculating underlings.

As they confront challenges and threats, the team bonds, grows, and helps the Palmiere fairies regain their homeland.

In GoGo!, the girls' routine is shaken up when the restored kingdom is attacked by a new group, Eternal, whose leader seeks to "collect" the world's most beautiful things—including the mystical Cure Rose Garden.

The PreCure are joined by the sharp-tongued, shape-shifting Milk, now able to become Milky Rose, and a new messenger fairy, Syrup. Together, they travel between worlds, forming new bonds and saving friends while fighting formidable, quirky villains.

  • PreCure: Legendary magical warriors, with Yes! PreCure 5 featuring hope, passion, radiance, tranquility, wisdom, and later, the secretive Milky Rose.
  • Dream Collet: A magic book that, when filled with all 55 Pinkies, can grant any wish.
  • Pinkies/Palmin: Small magical creatures essential for kingdom revival (Pinkies in the first series, Palmin in the sequel).
  • Cure Rose Garden: A mythical garden said to be the cradle of all life, central to GoGo!'s plot.
  • Nightmare/Eternal: Main antagonistic organizations, each with corporate-like structures and memorable, quirky executives.
  • Transformation Devices: “Pinky Catch” in Yes! PreCure 5 and "CureMo" (magical phones) in GoGo!.
  • Milky Rose: Milk’s magical warrior form, born from the legendary blue rose.
  • Cure Flure: Weapons summoned in GoGo! crucial for the team's finishing moves.

Yes! PreCure 5 marked a paradigm shift for the franchise, expanding from a duo model to a team dynamic reminiscent of classic superhero squads.

Initial staff hesitations gave way to high popularity and commercial success, especially among fans who enjoyed the rich cast diversity and their evolving friendships.

Toys, music, and merchandise sales flourished, reversing the previous season's downturn and inspiring subsequent PreCure installments to follow the team formula.

The charismatic blend of bashful idols, tough girls, elegant seniors, and playful fairies made the cast an enduring favorite.

The character of Bunbee—one of the series' rare recurring villains—became a fan-favorite due to his comically relatable, down-on-his-luck middle manager antics.

Both Yes! PreCure 5 and its sequel feature energetic, cheerleader-style opening and ending themes.

  • “PreCure 5, Smile go go!” and “PreCure 5, Full Throttle Go Go!” headline the shows, combining catchy melodies with chants and danceable rhythms.
  • Endings like “Ganbalance de Dance” became iconic, encouraging audience participation—kids and adults alike.

Yes! PreCure 5 and GoGo! have been adapted into multiple formats.

  • TV Anime: Two seasons, 97 episodes in total, broadcast nationally and internationally.
  • Manga: Serialized in Nakayoshi magazine, offering original side stories and daily-life moments.
  • Movies: Two feature films—the magical “Mirror Kingdom's Miracle Adventure!” and the delicious “The Happy Birthday in the Sweets Country.”
  • Games: Nintendo DS action and puzzle games, as well as collaborations with mobile titles like Puyopuyo! Quest and LINE Pokopoko.
  • Stage Shows: The characters headline live-action events and licensed musical performances.

Facing commercial struggles with the previous PreCure series, Toei Animation revamped the formula, crafting a brighter setting, more varied cast, and higher stakes.

Director Toshiaki Komura returned, as did series composer Yoshimi Narita, bringing consistent tone and character-driven writing. Character designer Toshie Kawamura gave each Cure memorable, visually distinctive looks—especially the curly, cat-eared Cure Lemonade and the regal Cure Aqua.

This season was also the first in the franchise to be produced in digital widescreen HD, bringing fresh vibrancy and energy to the visuals.

To revitalize engagement, the staff drew inspiration from sentai hero teams and aimed to balance humorous, romantic, and everyday moments alongside dramatic magical battles.

The European-inspired setting, memorable supporting characters, and the introduction of “male-fairy” mascots Coco and Natts also reflected audience and market feedback, adding new emotional and comedic layers.

Yes! PreCure 5's cast was featured in crossover movies and anniversary specials, cementing their place in Pretty Cure lore.

The story's legacy endured in side stories like Kibou no Chikara~Adult Precure '23~, exploring the heroines' lives as adults and resonating with fans who grew up alongside them.
