Kunitoki Hojo is the eldest son of Takatoki Hojo, but he is not interested in inheriting the family leadership. He is Tokiyuki Hojo’s older half-brother and shares a close, warm bond with him. Despite trying to escape the chaos in Kamakura, Kunitoki is betrayed by his uncle and meets a very tragic end. His fate deeply affects Tokiyuki, showing how much he means to his younger brother.
Kunitoki Hojo appears in the first and second episodes of the anime. He is a young boy, around 9 years old (actually 7 years old in full years) when the tragic events occur.
Kunitoki does not want to become the family leader. He openly says, “No way I’d want that,” showing he is not ambitious about the family’s power.
He is gentle and kind, looking after his younger brother Tokiyuki and enjoying time together.
He avoids trouble and likes to keep away from serious family disputes.
Kunitoki Hojo is the eldest (but not legitimate) son of Takatoki Hojo.
Because his mother was a concubine and not the main wife, he has no desire or expectation to become head of the Hojo family.
He grew up close to his half-brother Tokiyuki, the son of the main wife, and they spent much time playing and escaping their retainers together.
He shares a strong, caring relationship with Tokiyuki Hojo.
Despite being born from different mothers, the brothers are close and support each other.
He also interacts with Muneshige Godaiin, his uncle and supposed protector, who eventually betrays him for selfish reasons.
“No way I’d want that.”
A Peaceful Childhood
Kunitoki Hojo is the first son of Takatoki Hojo, but he is not the child of the main wife.
He does not care about becoming the head of the family and prefers spending time with his younger half-brother, Tokiyuki.
Together, the brothers have fun and try to stay clear of the pressure of family duties.
Fall of Kamakura and Escape
In 1333, when Kamakura falls, the Hojo family is destroyed and leaders are forced to end their own lives.
Kunitoki is told by his father to escape the city.
He leaves with his uncle, Muneshige Godaiin, hoping to reach safety.
Betrayal by Muneshige Godaiin
Muneshige Godaiin, greedy for his future, becomes desperate to save himself.
He beats Kunitoki until he passes out and delivers him to the enemy army led by Yoshisada Nitta.
Tragic Death
Because Kunitoki is part of the Hojo family, he is executed at a very young age, becoming a victim of the war.
He dies at just 9 years old (or 7 according to full years).
Effects on Tokiyuki
Hearing about Kunitoki's cruel death causes Tokiyuki deep shock.
He is so upset that he throws up, showing the strong bond between the two brothers.
Muneshige’s Fate
Muneshige is not accepted by Yoshisada Nitta for his act of betrayal.
He is banished and loses all respect, living a miserable life.
Later, he tries to trick his way closer to Tokiyuki in hopes of gaining something, but Tokiyuki sees through it and takes revenge for Kunitoki’s death.
Memories and Regret
After Muneshige's death, Tokiyuki remembers his brother cheering, “Do your best!” as a warm memory.
Kunitoki only appears in the first two episodes of the anime.
Even though he is the eldest son, he never wanted to become the family head.
His tragic ending is one of the most shocking and memorable moments in the story.
