Gertrude Baird

Gertrude Baird is a petite girl with short black hair and a notably flat chest, to the point that Kizuna Hida once remarked that she gave off no sex appeal even when naked.

She is the wielder of the Heart Hybrid Gear Zelshione.

Her way of speaking is coarse, and she often comes across as immature and hot-blooded.

She is especially competitive toward wealthy people, yet in emergencies she shows remarkable resolve and tries to keep fighting even while injured.

From the beginning, she places great trust in Kizuna Hida and even calls him husband.

Kizuna, in turn, treats her with familiarity and often calls her Gar-san, though he personally dislikes that nickname.

Gertrude has a blunt and unruly personality, with a childish streak that makes her reactions vivid and easy to read.

Her rivalry toward the rich gives her an edge, but it also adds a scrappy charm to her character.

Despite her rough exterior, she possesses a serious warrior’s mindset.

When lives and missions are on the line, she does not hesitate to push herself beyond her limits.

Gertrude is the owner of the Heart Hybrid Gear Zelshione.

She also uses a particle gun, one of her personal weapons.

Even when she was too badly hurt to undergo a Heart Hybrid with Kizuna, she still contributed by lending him her particle gun.

That act allowed her to support the battle indirectly and helped secure victory.

She was also assigned communication duties through Zelshione’s communication functions.

This made her an important link with headquarters during operations.

Gertrude was transferred from Mega Float West USA to Ataraxia alongside Scarlet Fairchild.

In the anime version, this companion is Sharon Cunningham.

The purpose of the transfer was to carry out the Okinawa Recapture Operation.

However, during Grabel's assault, Gertrude was gravely wounded and left in such critical condition that she had to be sent to the intensive care unit.

Although she survived, the injuries forced her into life in a wheelchair.

As a result, she was unable to take part in the crucial Okinawa operation itself.

During the following Tokyo Recapture Operation, her physical condition was still considered too poor for deployment.

She therefore remained at Ataraxia and served as the contact officer with headquarters using Zelshione’s communication system.

Because of that assignment, she was the only one who avoided becoming a prisoner of the Batlantis Empire after the operation failed.

Her absence from the battlefield unintentionally spared her from capture.

After Kizuna returned, Gertrude was still recovering from her injuries when Clayda and Elma of the Punishment Four Blades attacked.

She could not perform a Heart Hybrid with him, but she still aided him by lending her particle gun.

Once she recovered, she joined Kizuna in a reconnaissance mission to the imperial capital Zelthys.

In the battle in London, she and Aldea served in the advance unit.

During the decisive battle at Zelthys, she was assigned to protect the flagship of the allied forces.

This showed that, once healed, she returned fully to frontline service.

Because Grabel had been responsible for the incident that left her gravely wounded, Gertrude initially held strong resentment toward him.

Their relationship was understandably tense because of that history.

After cooperation with Izgard was established, however, she appears to have reached a workable understanding with him.

While not warm, the relationship became more functional and less openly hostile.

When the revived Nayuta Hida tampered with her memories, Gertrude lived as a student of Ataraxia Academy and as a member of the team Masters.

During that period, she was severely injured once again in the assault by the machine god Hokkuto and was hospitalized.

After regaining her true memories, she received a visit from Kizuna while in the hospital.

At first she was demoralized by Hokkuto’s overwhelming power, but Kizuna encouraged her, and she vowed to rise again.
