Renzou Shima

Exorcism Academy student. Aspiring title is Chanting Knight → Knight・Hand Knight. Belongs to Class 1-C of True Cross Academy High School. Young priest of the Myōō Darani Sect at Shima Temple.

The fifth son of the Shima family, which has a lineage of high-ranking monks in the Myōō Darani Sect, and the sixth of seven siblings. He dyes his hair a pinkish brown. Speaks in Kyoto dialect. Aspires to be a Chanting Knight but has a poor memory, so he doesn't remember scriptures well and uses a khakkhara (ritual staff) in combat. Treated somewhat formally by childhood friends from the Myōō Sect due to his childhood actions, and like other academy students, is called by his surname rather than his first name.

He has a carefree personality and dislikes troublesome matters. Recognized by himself and others as a ladies' man, he dyed his hair because he thought girls liked pink. Hates insects. Not as bad as Rin, but poor at studying. Usually seems frivolous, but is genuinely skilled, capable of summoning demons of the Myōō class, which only a true exorcist should handle, showing his immeasurable potential. Continued to treat Rin normally even after learning of Rin's true nature. Unlike Konekomaru, who feels indebted for being raised after becoming an orphan at a young age, he is tired of the absolute hierarchical relationships within the Myōō Sect and despises everything related to the sect (including religion) as depicted frequently.

His true identity is a spy under Mephisto. Recruited just before enrolling at True Cross Academy, he joined the Illuminati as a double agent, sent to spy at the academy, particularly to monitor Izumo. Only his family and Mephisto know this fact (later the academy students will also know), and detailed mission information is now limited to Mephisto. During the school festival, he was ordered by the organization to kidnap Izumo and succeeded. After revealing his identity to the exorcism academy students, he declared to Rin, who tried to bring him back, "From now on, you must be prepared to kill people," and defected from the Knights of the True Cross. Later, he confronted the exorcism academy students who entered the laboratory to retrieve Izumo.

After the Izumo arc, he returned to the academy as a spy for both sides under instructions from the Illuminati and rejoined the exorcism academy. However, due to the circumstances, he still avoids serious answers, so his relationship with the other students remains strained, but he enjoys the freedom to act without being bound by various obligations. He also began to reconsider his future, deciding to aim to become a Knight and Hand Knight instead of a Chanting Knight.

While acting as a spy, he also makes pointed remarks suspecting that Lightning might be exploiting Suguro, who is from the Myōō family. It seems that Lightning himself is under surveillance. When Yukio betrayed the Knights, he headed to the Illuminati with him.
