Shishou

Shishou is the current head of the historic Shi clan, an old noble family that has long served the state of Li.

He began life as a member of a branch line of the clan but was adopted into the main family because of his talent.

Long before the current Emperor ascended the throne, Shishou managed to gain the favor of the Former Emperor’s mother, the Empress Dowager, who was effectively a reigning Empress in all but name.

Recognizing his skill, she appointed him Grand Chancellor, giving him control of the country’s administration.

Despite being of branch-line origin, Shishou married the clan’s main-line daughter Shinbi, who had originally been sent into the inner palace and once harbored ambitions of becoming Empress.

Their marriage became a political pivot point, tying Shishou directly to the core of the Shi clan’s power — and to Shinbi’s festering resentment.

In the central court, Shishou is widely regarded as cold-blooded, calculating, and unfathomable.

Officials refer to him behind his back as “black-hearted” or “a crafty old raccoon,” yet none can deny his political brilliance.

Even the Emperor finds it hard to oppose him, as Shishou’s governance is what kept the realm stable during the Former Emperor’s ineffective rule.

He is an archetypal elder statesman: intimidating, shrewd, and always several moves ahead of everyone else.

Within his clan, however, Shishou’s authority is oddly limited.

Shinbi, now the de facto autocrat of the family, dominates internal clan affairs to the point where Shishou himself cannot openly oppose her.

This contrast defines his character: terrifyingly powerful in the political arena, quietly powerless in his own household.

It adds a bittersweet, almost darkly comedic note to his portrayal.

Shishou’s career is built on his ability to balance powerful, dangerous people.

Under the Empress Dowager, he handled state affairs so capably that the allegedly incompetent Former Emperor never managed to ruin the country.

He intentionally limited the Former Emperor’s effective power by controlling access, information, and policy execution, effectively ruling in the Empress Dowager’s name.

Because of this, he became someone everyone dreaded yet had to recognize as indispensable.

Even after the current Emperor ascends and five years pass, Shishou remains a towering figure in politics.

His presence is such that even the Emperor himself “cannot raise his head” in front of him, both out of respect and pragmatic fear.

When the beautifully androgynous eunuch Jinshi appears in the inner palace and is rapidly promoted, most officials either disdain him as an upstart or adore him for his looks.

Shishou alone looks at Jinshi and senses a future political rival, even without knowing his true identity, and quietly intensifies his vigilance.

Shishou’s influence reaches deep into the harem and its politics.

As Grand Chancellor during the Former Emperor’s time, he helped shape the structure of the inner palace.

The Former Emperor had a disturbing preference for girls around ten years old and showed little interest in adult women.

To mitigate the damage this could cause, Shishou proposed expanding and complicating the inner palace, both physically and administratively, to dilute the Emperor’s access to potential victims.

The Empress Dowager took his advice, leading to a massive enlargement and bureaucratic bloating of the harem.

Behind the scenes, this was one of Shishou’s ways of trying to restrain the Former Emperor’s worst tendencies.

At the same time, he made Shinbi’s father agree to a compromise: slaves held by the Shi clan would be put to work in the now-enlarged inner palace.

By doing this, Shishou cut off the clan’s most scandalous source of profit — large-scale slave trading — while saving them from official punishment.

Historically, the Shi clan had grown rich through slave trading, accumulating enormous wealth and influence.

Once the Empress Dowager took power, this behavior came under intense scrutiny.

Public criticism mounted, and the question of how to handle the clan’s “dirty money” became unavoidable.

The Empress Dowager chose a political solution over open punishment.

She agreed to overlook the clan’s past slave-trading crimes on one condition: they would send a main-line daughter into the inner palace as a hostage.

The family complied, breaking off Shishou’s previous engagement and sending the clan heiress Shinbi into the inner palace of Hua Central Province instead.

Later, through Shishou’s maneuvering, those same slaves ended up working in the expanded inner palace.

This both cut off the Shi clan’s involvement in slave trading and turned their “problem” into state labor.

Shinbi entered the inner palace with the pride and ambition of someone who expected to become Empress.

She was a main-line daughter of the Shi clan and saw herself as worthy of the highest position.
