Character Setting

Edit

Aqua is a water goddess and the main deity of the Axis Church in the KONOSUBA series. While she looks stunning and has immense divine powers, her personality is full of flaws, making her both hilarious and troublesome. Despite being a true goddess, hardly anyone believes her, not even her own followers. She travels to another world with Kazuma Satou as an unexpected "item," setting off a wild and chaotic adventure.

Aqua has long, beautiful, light blue hair and striking blue eyes.

She usually wears a "goddess raiment," a blue outfit that marks her as divine, and at home she enjoys blue pajamas.

She appears as a girl around Kazuma Satou's age, though her actual age is unknown and she has existed since before the Crimson Demons were born.

Carefree and Self-Centered

Aqua is cheerful and full of energy but has almost no common sense.

She is boastful, spoiled, and loves to be praised by others.

She laughs at people with a "pu-kusu-kusu" giggle, often making fun of Kazuma Satou.

Weak but Emotional

Even though she acts tough, Aqua is actually very sensitive, quick to cry, and hates being left alone.

She is impulsive and always looking for attention, making her the ultimate troublemaker.

Lacking Common Sense

Out of her whole party, Aqua is the one who completely ignores common sense.

She tends to blame Kazuma Satou for the disasters she causes and never thinks she's at fault.

Unlucky and Wasteful

Aqua's luck is extremely low. She spends all her allowance on drinks and parties, always losing in gambling and ending up with huge debts.

Even when she uses magic to help, things often go wrong or turn out in silly ways.

Lovable in Her Own Way

Despite all her troubles and mistakes, even other party members like Megumin and Darkness sometimes admit she has some cute sides, though rarely to her face.

Aqua was originally in charge of guiding young Japanese souls after death—offering them choices to go to heaven, reincarnate, or move to another world.

After Kazuma Satou died, she mocked him until he got angry and brought her along as "one special item" to a new world.

She registered as an Archpriest at the guild soon after arriving in the new world.

She has knowledge about modern Japan and Earth, though she doesn’t hide the fact that she is a goddess.

She often finds herself not believed, especially by her own Axis followers, who think she’s just a lookalike or a fake.

Divine and Magical Powers

Aqua has extremely high stats, except for her luck (very low) and intelligence (slightly below average).

She knows all Archpriest magic and party tricks from the start, thanks to her divine status.

Her healing, purification, and resurrection magic are incredibly powerful, making her a true goddess, able to erase curses and perform miracles impossible for humans.

Aqua can turn any water into holy water, instantly revive Kazuma Satou’s body, and even purify toxic or undead-filled lakes.

She can wield "God Blow" and "God Requiem"—sacred physical attacks that can defeat powerful enemies.

Combat Limitations

Although she’s strong against undead, demons, and curses, she is not good in direct combat, especially against monsters like giant toads.

Her power also accidentally attracts undead, so she often ends up fighting crowds of monsters standing in her own holy light.

Special Equipment

Aqua possesses the "Raiment of the Goddess," an item that greatly boosts her resistance to magic and negative status.

She also uses a special staff with a flower-shaped tip.

Kazuma Satou

Aqua travels with Kazuma Satou after he brings her to another world out of revenge.

They argue almost constantly, with Kazuma Satou calling her a "useless goddess" but still relying on her unique resurrection powers.

Megumin and Darkness

Megumin and Darkness are party members who sometimes doubt that Aqua is a real goddess.

Yet, their group has a bond and they end up caring for each other.

Wiz and Vanir

Aqua dislikes all undead and demons. She always tries to purify Wiz (who is a lich) and argues with Vanir, but their relationships evolve over time.

She also has a pet chick called Zeltei, who thinks Vanir is its parent.

Axis Church

Aqua’s followers are known for being eccentric and overbearing, making the Axis Church infamous.

Besides, Aqua herself often goes unrecognized by the members and is seen as a fake.

  • Aqua loves parties, drinking, and showing off her "party trick" skills, but she never accepts money for her performances.
  • Her magic often backfires, sometimes making situations worse, like turning medicinal hot springs into ordinary water.
  • Despite her flaws, she is beloved by adventurers and cared about by her companions, especially when she disappears or runs away.
  • In various game and anime crossovers, Aqua continues to be a troublemaker, with her true divine powers sometimes finally recognized.
  • She was voted first in the second official popularity poll, mostly thanks to Axis Church members voting in mass.

  • "Even though I've been doing this for so long, you're the first person I've ever seen die like that. Pukusukusu!"
  • "That's cheating! You can't take a goddess with you! That's not fair! Please! Wait for me!!"
  • "It’s not supposed to be my fault…"
  • "You should praise me more! All of you, spoil me with compliments!"

Arrival in the New World

After laughing at Kazuma Satou’s silly cause of death in the afterlife, Aqua becomes his "item" for reincarnation and winds up thrown into a fantasy world alongside him. She joins the adventurer’s guild, registering as an Archpriest.

Chaos in the Party

With her powerful magic, Aqua fights evil spirits, undead, and demon lords’ minions—but she usually causes more problems than she solves, such as flooding the town during a battle, resulting in massive debt.

Troubles with Axis Church

Aqua’s own church worships her as the goddess of water, but her followers cause even more chaos wherever they go.

Despite her huge purification power, she sometimes makes things worse (like turning holy hot springs into just plain hot water), but later she is praised when it turns out she made the springs even more divine.

Magic Fails and Redemption

Despite being mocked by Kazuma Satou and others as "useless," Aqua proves her worth more than once, saving the party from disaster by purifying, healing, and resurrecting them.

By the climax of the story, Aqua plays a key role in fighting the Demon King, weakening his powers with her divine abilities, fulfilling her role as a true main heroine.

Character Dynamics and Legacy

Though often seen as a troublemaker and the butt of many jokes, Aqua’s absence is deeply felt by her companions.

Even Kazuma Satou realizes how much they depend on her, especially her resurrection powers.

It is suggested that, even after her friends’ lives end, she will continue watching over them and their descendants as a true goddess.

Crossover Appearances

Aqua appears in several crossover games, like "White Cat Project," "#Compass," and "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime," usually keeping her trademark troublemaking skills and mighty holy magic.

Fan Popularity

Aqua is both loved and laughed at by fans, often ranking high in popularity polls, especially with help from dedicated Axis Church enthusiasts.

Voice Actress

Originally, Rie Takahashi tried out for Aqua’s role before being cast as Megumin, which was suggested by the scriptwriter who thought she was perfect for the part.

Aqua owns a chick called "Zeltei" (Kingsford Zeltman), which she claims will one day become a dragon king. The chick has strong magical power but no useful abilities, except that monsters avoid it. Its affection is for Vanir, believing him to be its true parent.

There are many jokes and mysteries about what kind of underwear Aqua wears, as the anime never shows it clearly.

In some versions, she is portrayed with blue-striped underwear or a T-back, but no one in the series has succeeded in stealing them from her, not even with magic theft.
