Character Setting

Edit

Ifrit is a superior fire spirit from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, originally serving the demon lord Leon Cromwell and later reborn as a follower of Veldora Tempest after being absorbed by Rimuru Tempest.

Ifrit is a high-ranking fire spirit, sometimes referred to as the “Flame Giant.”

He is first introduced as a weaponized spirit used by Leon Cromwell, then becomes a key presence inside Rimuru’s stomach in the side story Veldora’s Slime Observation Journal.

Leon attempts to make Shizue Izawa his vessel for Ifrit, but the possession fails when Shizue awakens the Unique Skill “Pervert,” preventing a full takeover of her body.

Despite this incomplete possession, Ifrit still functions as Leon’s subordinate, using Shizue’s body as a medium to wield his destructive flame powers.

A masked hero later appears before Shizue, wearing the Anti-Magic Mask, which suppresses Ifrit’s power and seals him inside Shizue.

When Rimuru meets Shizue, her ability to suppress Ifrit reaches its limit, and Ifrit manifests in a berserk state.

In the web novel, he appears around chapter 23; in the light novel he debuts in volume 1; in the manga he appears in volume 2; and in the anime he first appears in episode 7.

Rimuru, who possesses Heat Fluctuation Resistance, defeats Ifrit with little effort and then absorbs him using the skill Predator.

In the web novel continuity, Ifrit is erased at this point and does not reappear again.

However, in the manga-original prose story Veldora’s Slime Observation Journal, he is shown to have survived inside Rimuru’s stomach and undergoes surprising character development.

When he is still being used as a weapon, Ifrit has almost no real self-awareness.

He behaves more like a system or attack program, reacting purely to hostility and driven by the destructive impulses typical of fire spirits.

In Veldora’s Slime Observation Journal, however, he becomes a remarkably different character.

He is serious, diligent, and well-mannered, able to properly show respect toward superiors and behave like a responsible aide.

He speaks in consistent, polite language even when addressing Veldora Tempest and the Daikenja (“Great Sage”).

Because his thinking is very rigid and rule-bound, Veldora often teases him for being too stiff-headed.

Despite his polite demeanor, Ifrit is not without bite.

As he grows more self-aware, he starts responding to Veldora in a flat, drawn-out “I see—” tone, and when suspicion falls on Veldora, he quickly distances himself with comments like “I am not involved in this,” showing a dry, almost sarcastic side.

He tends to play the “straight man” to Veldora’s antics, constantly getting dragged into trouble but trying to keep things orderly.

This mix of earnestness, sarcasm, and quiet suffering makes him an unexpectedly charming character.

Veldora takes his increasingly sharp remarks as a sign of a healthy, maturing ego.

Pleased by this development, he officially recognizes Ifrit as his “second friend,” right after Rimuru.

Ifrit’s powers are fire-focused and were dangerous enough to be used by a demon lord as a trump card.

After his defeat and absorption, many of his abilities are analyzed and later reused or evolved by Rimuru and other characters.

Flame Transformation Explosive Hell Circle (Flare Circle)

This is a wide-area, top-tier flame attack that also functions as a capture barrier.

Ifrit vaporizes his own body into gas and fills a radius of about one hundred meters with ultra-high-temperature fire and heat.

The flames continue until everything within the area is burned to ash or otherwise destroyed.

When fighting Rimuru, Ifrit first sends out a clone as a decoy, tricking Rimuru into attacking it while he silently saturates the surroundings with his energy in preparation for this spell.

After Rimuru devours Ifrit, this ability is analyzed internally.

Rimuru later uses it in auto-battle mode during the fight against the Orc Lord.

From this analysis, Rimuru also gains concepts like “Area Barrier,” which influence his later growth and magic repertoire.

Ifrit’s flame control aspects contribute to techniques such as Benimaru’s “Hell Flare,” which relies on fine-tuned heat manipulation.

Clone Body

Ifrit can create subordinate copies of himself.

These clones are not equal to the original and function as weaker, lower-performance versions.

During his fight with Rimuru, Ifrit deploys a clone early on, but Rimuru quickly sees through the trick and realizes it is only a lesser body.

Once Ifrit is absorbed, this ability is also analyzed and repurposed.

Rimuru grants a derived form of this skill to Souei.

Souei uses it for combat, intelligence gathering, and stealth operations, greatly improving his versatility as a spy and assassin.

Salamander Summoning

Ifrit can summon large numbers of salamander-like flame lizards.

It is unclear whether this is a formal skill or a specialized use of his fire-spirit nature, but he demonstrates the ability to call forth many such creatures at once.

These salamanders are not just battlefield tools.

In later story developments, they become important elements in a certain business enterprise, showing how Ifrit’s influence lingers on in the world’s economics as well as its combat styles.

Lasting Influence of His Powers

Even after his “defeat” and absorption, traces of Ifrit’s abilities appear frequently.

Rimuru’s later techniques involving wide-area barriers and advanced flame control all owe something to the analysis of Ifrit’s skills.

Benimaru’s Hell Flare incorporates the “Heat Manipulation” aspect derived from Ifrit’s fire control.

Rimuru’s acquisition of large-scale barrier capabilities is closely linked to the structure of Flame Transformation Explosive Hell Circle.

When Rimuru absorbs Ifrit, the original plan is for him to be isolated and eventually erased inside Rimuru’s “stomach” space.

Instead, Veldora Tempest, who is also sealed within Rimuru, calls Ifrit into the same inner space, preventing his disappearance.

In this shared mental/spiritual domain, Ifrit’s formerly mechanical personality begins to soften and expand.

He becomes a regular conversation partner for Veldora and joins him in observing Rimuru’s adventures from inside the stomach.

Over time, exposure to Veldora and constant observation of Rimuru’s growth gives Ifrit a chance to develop a more nuanced self.

He gains hobbies, opinions, and a deeper understanding of concepts like guilt, empathy, and regret.

One of his first major hobbies is shogi, a board game Veldora teaches him.

He also devours books, especially classical and modern treatises on tactics and strategy, turning himself into a bit of a war-theory nerd.

At first, Ifrit addresses Veldora in extremely proper, formal speech, always deferential and stiff.

As volumes go by, his tone relaxes and he begins dropping subtly dry comments or skeptical replies when Veldora exaggerates.

When others begin to suspect that Veldora is behind some problem, Ifrit quickly insists he is uninvolved and tries to keep his distance, almost like a coworker desperately avoiding blame.

This dry humor and his evolution from a weapon into a thinking person make his arc in the journal one of the more surprising developments in the franchise.

Reflections on Shizue Izawa

Veldora remarks that Ifrit’s devotion to Leon Cromwell and Shizue Izawa’s hatred for Leon created the worst possible compatibility between host and spirit.

According to him, if Shizue and Ifrit had truly connected and understood each other, their combined power would have multiplied several times over, and Shizue’s life would not have ended so soon; they might have walked a completely different path together.

Shizue was summoned to the new world as a child.

Normally, the enormous magicules forced into a summoned child’s body gradually destroy them from the inside, leading to an early death.

By accepting Ifrit as a resident spirit, Shizue gained the ability to perfectly control the magicules within her body.

This allowed her to survive instead of being killed by her own unstable energy.

Later, Leon Cromwell describes his actions as merely giving Shizue “a choice to live.”

He implies Shizue had the freedom to accept or reject Ifrit, and that hosting Ifrit simply became the starting point for her life in the otherworld.

In the anime’s special episode based on Veldora’s diary, Ifrit comments, in summary, that he worshipped Leon, and for that reason he and Shizue were fundamentally incompatible.

Even so, he acknowledges that she was a pitiful woman, tossed around by fate.

The manga version of Veldora’s journal goes deeper into Ifrit’s own understanding of why they never reconciled.

He explains that he once killed a girl named Pirino, who was a close friend of Shizue.

At the time, Ifrit only had a very faint self-awareness, acting purely in reaction to hostility.

Even so, he recognizes that this does not excuse what he did and accepts that it is a sin he committed.

He identifies this killing as the core reason he and Shizue could never truly connect.

Shizue saw Ifrit’s crime as her own burden and punished herself, tormenting her heart with a sense of personal culpability for Pirino’s death.

Ifrit admits he had treated death as a natural part of the world and therefore failed to notice how deeply Shizue was grieving.

Only by watching Rimuru through Veldora’s journal and reflecting on human emotions does he understand the full weight of her sorrow.

He concludes that, without this long period of observation and introspection with Veldora, it would have taken him hundreds of years to reach that realization—if he could have at all.

He regrets that he never tried to reconcile with Shizue while she was alive and feels that his own actions and insensitivity made any real understanding between them impossible.

After Veldora’s Release

When Rimuru evolves into a demon lord, Veldora Tempest successfully breaks free from his long-standing seal.

Thanks to the support of Wisdom King Raphael (an evolved form of the Daikenja), Veldora can still observe the outside world even after his release.

For a while after this, Ifrit has no major on-screen activity.

However, the light novel’s volume 11 reveals that he eventually gains a physical body and becomes Veldora’s attendant, fully stepping into the world as an independent being rather than a mere spirit or internal voice.

Ifrit appears frequently as an enemy or boss in crossover and collaboration events.

He is a popular choice for fire-themed battles due to his iconic design and clear association with destructive flame power.

Games in which Ifrit has appeared as a collaboration enemy include:

– Pocoron Dungeons

– The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross

– Crash Fever

– Elemental Story

– SINoALICE

– Last Cloudia

– Summons Board

– Monster Strike

Outside of games, Ifrit has shown up in various promotional collaborations.

In one campaign with SUUMO (a Japanese real estate brand), special videos featuring Veldora and Ifrit were released.

He has also appeared in in-store announcements and promotional audio spots along with Veldora, such as at Bic Camera retail stores.

These appearances often play up his straight-man, exasperated reactions to Veldora’s over-the-top personality.

Spin-off: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Slime Diaries

Ifrit appears in the spin-off series The Slime Diaries.

There, he and Veldora are occasionally shown watching Rimuru and the others enjoy peaceful, slice-of-life days, commenting on events “live” from inside Rimuru’s stomach.

These scenes emphasize the comedic side of Ifrit’s character.

He becomes almost an audience surrogate, reacting to Rimuru’s daily antics with a mix of curiosity, amusement, and occasional disbelief.

Ifrit is sometimes listed or tagged under several names and variations within databases and fan communities.

These include:

Ifrit (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime)

Calis (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime)

Calis (short form / “TenSura” tag)

“Calis” appears to be an alternate or additional designation connected to Ifrit in some materials.

Regardless of the label, the character described under these names is the same superior fire spirit once bound to Leon Cromwell and later associated with Veldora and Rimuru.
