Nidaime is a mysterious gentleman who stands out with his cool British style and powerful aura. He became the second disciple of Professor Akadama after being taken from Nagasaki in the Meiji era. After a dramatic love story and a huge fight with his master, he left Japan for many years. A hundred years later, he returned, bringing with him an air of elegance and a complex relationship with both Benten and Professor Akadama. Although he insists he does not want to be a tengu or inherit the title of "Second," he often behaves just like one, especially when helping out others. His story is filled with deep grudges, old flames, exciting fights, and the struggle between duty and desire.
Nidaime is easily recognized by his gentlemanly style.
He usually wears a silk top hat and a black three-piece suit, complete with a bow tie, which gives him an air of a British gentleman.
In the anime, he is shown with a white top hat, a grey and white striped tie, and a white frock coat.
He often carries elegant European furniture and goods with him and loves using Napoleon gold coins.
Nidaime is proud, polite, and often acts in a cool, calm way.
He dislikes owing favors to others, but he is capable of showing kindness, especially to those he respects.
He's very firm about not wanting to be a tengu or take over as the next leader, yet he is always acting like one.
His sense of style and pride make him stand out, but he is also fair and reliable when people need help.
Nidaime was once a young boy in Nagasaki during the Meiji period.
Professor Akadama took him away and raised him as his second disciple.
He was trained to be strong and wise, meant to follow in his master’s footsteps.
Love and a Great Fight
During the Taisho era, Nidaime fell in love with the daughter of the owner of the "Twentieth Century Hotel."
But things turned sad after he got into a terrible three-day fight with Professor Akadama.
In the end, he lost.
The girl he loved left him a letter with just an "X" and moved to another country, breaking his heart.
Feeling lost, Nidaime also left Japan.
Return to Japan and a New Rival
A hundred years later, Nidaime suddenly came back to Japan.
He met Benten, a woman who reminded him of his lost love.
But because of his old problems with Professor Akadama, Nidaime and Benten became rivals and even grew to hate each other.
Life in Japan
Now, Nidaime lives a fancy life using gold coins and British treasures he brought from overseas.
He meets Yasaburō Shimogamo after Yasaburō helps him with a problem, and the two become friends even though Nidaime doesn’t usually like to owe anyone.
Settling Old Scores
Nidaime’s true reason for returning is to settle things with Benten and Professor Akadama.
He fights Benten and wins, but thanks to Yasaburō’s clever actions, Nidaime realizes he cannot defeat Professor Akadama.
So, he decides to walk away and quit fighting for the title.
Nidaime claims he won't use tengu powers or become a tengu, but he still uses tengu abilities in everyday life.
He is almost as strong as Professor Akadama and is respected as a powerful tengu-like being.
Nidaime has a difficult relationship with Professor Akadama, who was both his teacher and his rival.
His love for the hotel owner's daughter changed his life, but Benten later takes her place as his main rival.
He dislikes being called "Second," but he helps out the tanuki people and sometimes acts as a stand-in for Professor Akadama, which makes Yasaburō and others think of him as the second leader.
Despite talking about not wanting to be a tengu or a leader, Nidaime always ends up acting like both.
He is known for always keeping his word and for his fair but strict ways.
He never seems to be upset by being called "Second."
