Nadeko Sengoku is a main character in the MONOGATARI Series, first appearing in the arc "Nadeko Snake." She is a second-year middle school girl known for her shy personality and very cute looks. She is a childhood friend of Koyomi Araragi and Tsukihi Araragi. Nadeko has a difficult life after getting involved with a curse called the "Snake Constricting Rope," which changes her whole world. She later even becomes a god for a while before returning to being an ordinary girl. Nadeko loves manga, anime, and games from older generations. Despite her troubles, she keeps moving forward, and later begins a career as a manga artist. She is also known for having special abilities linked to her drawings.
Nadeko Sengoku is 153 cm tall.
Her birthday is June 3, making her a Gemini, and her blood type is B.
She usually hides her eyes with her bangs and often wears a hat.
She likes to go barefoot indoors and really dislikes wearing socks, even when it’s cold.
Outside of her school uniform, Nadeko prefers to wear pants instead of skirts.
Nadeko is shy, quiet, and easily scared.
She has a hard time trusting others and is sensitive to how people look at her.
She dislikes being touched or feeling the warmth of others, but strange things don’t always bother her (like having her skirt tugged).
She loves manga, anime, and retro games, often making niche references.
Nadeko is very bad at sports, but if she’s in danger, she can move really fast.
She hates doing hard things or putting in effort, and when faced with a problem, she often just says, "It’s fine if I get in trouble for it."
She is also often laughing easily, even though she doesn’t talk much.
Nadeko was a classmate of Koyomi Araragi in elementary school and currently attends the middle school he graduated from.
She is close to Tsukihi Araragi, calling her "Lala-chan," and is called "Sen-chan" by Tsukihi.
She grew up surrounded by kindness and is popular with boys, but doesn’t have many friends.
Others always treat her as cute, so she tends to hide her true feelings and just goes along with what people say to her.
Nadeko develops special powers:
She can use her drawing skills to create and summon paper spirits (shikigami) based on her drawings of herself from various times in her life.
She can also make protective charms and seal oddities (oddities are supernatural beings) using her art.
Her ability to summon and control these spirits comes partly from once being a god.
Later, she learns how to seal away oddities and make special paper charms thanks to help from Gaen Izuko.
Nadeko thinks of Koyomi Araragi as her "big brother," and acts especially brave around him.
Although she seems lovey-dovey with him, she later realizes she was just playing the role of a tragic heroine.
She is friends with Tsukihi Araragi, and they have nicknames for each other.
She has few other friends and often feels lonely, but is not bullied; people are mostly kind to her.
Suruga Kanbaru and Shinobu Oshino also interact with her during the story, especially when helping with supernatural events.
Nadeko is known as a "loli bait" character because of her cute and young looks.
She laughs easily and finds Koyomi and Suruga's jokes very funny.
Her favorite games are old retro games, and her favorite manga and music are also from the 1980s.
She is not a very good student, especially in math and science, but is good at art and home economics.
She hates socks and likes to be barefoot, even visiting Koyomi’s room with bare feet.
She started out very shy, but she becomes a main narrator and second main character as the series goes on.
"Koyomi big brother... please, watch me closely."
The Snake Curse
One day, a boy at Nadeko’s school asks her out. She says no.
Because of this, Nadeko becomes the target of a curse called the "Snake Constricting Rope."
Some girls in her class, jealous about the boy, perform an "omen" at a shrine to curse Nadeko.
Nadeko tries to remove the curse herself, but it goes wrong — the shrine is full of bad supernatural energy.
Koyomi Araragi and Meme Oshino help Nadeko break the curse.
However, there was a second snake — the boy she rejected also cursed her, and Nadeko is attacked again.
With Koyomi and Suruga’s help, she escapes, but the curse harms the people who tried to curse her.
Later, Nadeko is approached by Kuchinawa, the snake god of the shrine.
It wants her to find its old body as payment for killing the snakes during the curse removal.
Nadeko, feeling guilty, agrees and begins to search with Kuchinawa’s spirit around her arm.
Becoming a God
In the "Nadeko Medusa" arc, Nadeko learns about Koyomi’s romantic relationship with Hitagi Senjougahara.
This upsets her, and she wishes at the shrine for Hitagi to disappear.
Her wish is answered, and Nadeko transforms into a god — she becomes the new god of the White Snake Shrine.
She becomes very powerful and nearly kills Koyomi and Shinobu Oshino when they try to stop her.
Through a deal with Hitagi, Nadeko promises to not hurt them until graduation day.
Return to Normal Life
During the "Hitagi End" arc, Kaiki Deishū talks to Nadeko and convinces her to go back to being a human.
After this, Nadeko cuts her hair very short and decides to become a manga artist.
She avoids Koyomi for a while, deciding she only loved the idea of loving him and wanted to act like a tragic girl.
Later Years and New Abilities
About five years later, in "Musubimonogatari," Nadeko debuts as a manga artist under the name "Nadeko Sengoku."
She is working on her third series.
In the episodes "Tsukihi Undo" and "Nadeko Draw," Nadeko’s talent for using paper spirits grows.
With advice from Gaen Izuko and Ononoki Yotsugi, she uses her drawing magic to seal or handle oddities.
She can summon versions of herself from the past by drawing them — but this sometimes causes trouble.
Nadeko’s role grows in later stories, becoming a major narrator and second protagonist from "Nadeko Draw" and "Nadeko Around" onwards.
She learns to face her feelings and her complicated past, using her art to help with supernatural problems as a member of the Gaen group’s experts.
