Ramposa III is the aging king of the Re-Estize Kingdom, a fundamentally kind but politically indecisive monarch whose long reign ends in tragedy during the rise of Ainz Ooal Gown and the Sorcerer Kingdom.
Ramposa III has been on the throne for 39 years and is about 60 years old during the central events.
Despite his age and fatigue, he remains king because both of his potential successors are problematic and the struggle between the royalist and noble factions is unresolved.
Among twelve major rulers evaluated in the setting, his “kingly competence” is ranked around seventh.
He has neither spectacular failures nor great breakthroughs, making his reign relatively mediocre in terms of achievements.
Ramposa III is a genuine humanitarian who sincerely wishes for the peace and safety of his people.
He does not hesitate to personally visit dangerous situations if it means protecting his subjects.
He has a deep understanding of and sympathy for commoners, unusual for a monarch in his world.
Because of this, many lower-born individuals and reform-minded nobles respect him.
His character is widely recognized as that of a moral, decent person rather than a shrewd statesman.
He inspires affection and loyalty, especially from those who prioritize justice and compassion over power politics.
As a person, Ramposa III is admirable; as a king, he is only moderately capable.
His long time on the throne has not translated into equally large accomplishments.
He is poor at decisive, ruthless choices that are often demanded of a monarch.
He tends to postpone hard decisions, especially when they involve family or deep factional conflict.
Despite his shortcomings, he is good at recognizing and hiring talented individuals.
Many of the kingdom’s best people rise to prominence because he is willing to appoint them.
His captain of the Royal Guard, Gazef Stronoff, respects him so much that Gazef states he would like to serve as his bodyguard even after the king’s retirement.
This shows how strongly Ramposa’s personal virtue moves those close to him.
Ramposa III has at least two relevant princes: Barbro Andrean Ield Ryle Vaiself and Zanac.
Both, however, have significant shortcomings, especially in terms of political ability and temperament.
He is aware that Barbro has effectively fallen out of the succession race due to his failures and character defects.
Even so, Ramposa cannot completely abandon Barbro emotionally as a father.
Because he cannot fully cut off Barbro and firmly name Zanac as heir at the best possible timing, he misses a perfect chance to stabilize succession.
This delay also postpones resolving the conflict between the royal faction and noble faction, leaving the kingdom politically unstable.
Throughout his reign, the kingdom is split between the royalist faction supporting the crown and the powerful noble faction.
These groups clash repeatedly, undermining reforms and weakening the state.
Ramposa’s mild and conciliatory nature prevents him from crushing or decisively unifying the factions.
Instead, he manages a fragile balance, which works for a time but worsens the kingdom’s long-term vulnerability.
His inability to fully resolve factional conflict contributes to the kingdom being strategically and politically weaker than its rivals.
This weakness becomes fatal when facing the Empire allied with Ainz Ooal Gown and later the Sorcerer Kingdom.
Ramposa III eventually enters into war with the Baharuth Empire, which is secretly or openly aligned with Ainz Ooal Gown.
This decision leads indirectly to an unprecedented massacre of his own people by Ainz’s forces on the battlefield.
He understands that this war has brought disaster upon his kingdom and feels deep responsibility for the mass slaughter of his subjects.
He resolves to accept his own death in battle, seeing it as a way to shoulder the blame as king.
However, Gazef Stronoff and others persuade him not to throw his life away.
They insist that he must live on to take responsibility and to try to guide the kingdom through its crisis, even if only symbolically.
When the Empire and Ainz’s forces invade, Ramposa tries to protect Barbro in his own way.
He assigns Barbro to a seemingly unimportant or “idle” post, hoping to keep him away from the front lines and thus out of lethal danger.
Barbro, however, resents this sidelining and sees it as an insult.
In his anger, he chooses to attack Carne Village, an act that is neither strategically wise nor authorized as part of a larger plan.
This impulsive decision leads to Barbro’s death.
Thus, Ramposa’s attempt to save his son by giving him a safe but humiliating role ironically contributes to the circumstances that get Barbro killed.
Following the great massacre of the Re-Estize Kingdom’s army by Ainz Ooal Gown, Ramposa III’s health and spirit deteriorate sharply.
He becomes visibly more haggard and exhausted than before.
In this weakened state, he increasingly leaves the day-to-day running of the government to Prince Zanac.
Zanac steps in to conduct political affairs and handle the kingdom’s response to the looming threat of the Sorcerer Kingdom.
When the Sorcerer Kingdom, ruled by Ainz Ooal Gown, moves against the Re-Estize Kingdom, Ramposa receives Albedo as an envoy.
She arrives to deliver a declaration of war.
Ramposa, fully aware of his past failures and the suffering of his people, offers his own head to Albedo as an act of apology and atonement.
He hopes that by sacrificing himself, he might avert a wider war and spare his kingdom further bloodshed.
Albedo, however, does not accept this as sufficient.
The Sorcerer Kingdom proceeds to declare war on the Re-Estize Kingdom regardless of his gesture.
After the kingdom’s army is defeated by the forces of the Sorcerer Kingdom, Ramposa III remains in the royal capital.
He understands that the fall of his kingdom is imminent.
He orders the retainers and loyal followers who still remain in the royal castle to flee under cover of night.
He wants them to survive rather than die pointlessly alongside him.
Ramposa chooses to stay in the royal castle as the “last king” of the Re-Estize Kingdom.
He accepts his fate and does not attempt to escape.
Ultimately, he is killed by an unknown assailant.
His death is by stabbing, but the identity of the murderer is not revealed.
Climb later speculates that Ramposa may have been killed by Princess Renner while she was under the control of Demiurge’s curse-like command ability.
This remains only a conjecture within the story, and the exact details of the king’s last moments are left unclear.
Ramposa III is remembered as a kind man rather than a powerful ruler.
His inability to make ruthless political decisions contributes to both the survival of many good people and to the eventual ruin of his kingdom.
He succeeds in gathering and promoting exceptional talents, such as Gazef Stronoff and other capable retainers.
Yet many of those talents are ultimately unable to save the kingdom from external threats and internal decay.
In global rankings, he sits in the middle for “kingly excellence,” reflecting a reign without grand conquests or major reforms.
He becomes a tragic figure: a decent person crushed by circumstances, factional struggles, and the overwhelming might of Ainz Ooal Gown and the Sorcerer Kingdom.
