Gazef Stronoff is the Warrior Captain of the Re-Estize Kingdom, famed as its strongest warrior and the commander of the king’s personal elite troops.
Though born a commoner, he rose through sheer strength and character to become a national hero whose name is feared by neighboring countries.
Name: Gazef Stronoff
Gender: Male
Position: Warrior Captain of the Re-Estize Kingdom
Residence: Royal Capital of the Re-Estize Kingdom
Age: 30s
Birthday: 21st day of the month of Middle Earth
Occupation Levels (implied): Fighter (unknown level), Mercenary (unknown level), Champion (unknown level), etc.
Hobby: Saving money
Title / Epithet: Strongest Warrior of the Kingdom
Voice Actor (anime adaptation): Hirokazu Shirokuma
Gazef serves as the Warrior Captain directly under King Ramposa III, leading a unit of rigorously trained royal elites.
His combat power, especially when fully equipped with the Kingdom’s Five Treasures, is said to rival that of heroes.
He is widely known across neighboring nations as “the strongest warrior of the Re-Estize Kingdom.”
Because of this fame and power, he is frequently targeted by hostile forces, including foreign powers that see him as an obstacle to their plans.
Gazef descends from southern bloodlines and has black hair and black eyes, traits rare in his region.
He is renowned for his original martial techniques such as “Sixfold Light Slash” and is even capable of using ultimate-level martial arts thanks to guidance from the former adamantite-ranked adventurer Vesture.
Gazef rose from the status of an ordinary commoner, which gave him strong empathy for the common people.
He is willing to leap into obvious traps if doing so might save civilians, valuing their lives above his own safety or political advantage.
He shows this clearly during the incident that leads to his meeting with Ainz Ooal Gown, where he goes to defend a village despite knowing it is likely a setup.
Psychologically, he is courageous, self-sacrificing, and unshakably loyal, a man of noble spirit regardless of his birth.
He is, for better or worse, a pure warrior.
His private life is extremely modest, and he holds little interest in luxury, political maneuvering, or status.
Gazef is fully aware that his political skills are nearly nonexistent.
Because of this, and because he wants to remain a “sword of the king free from selfish motives,” he refuses to participate in court intrigues and avoids noble factions entirely.
As a result, despite his achievements, he was never granted a noble title during most of his life.
Nobles who belong to aristocratic factions often scorn or resent him, seeing him as a lowborn brute propping up the king’s power by sheer force.
Outside the Kingdom, the theocracy known as the Slane Theocracy regards him as a “cancer” that prolongs the life of the corrupt Re-Estize Kingdom.
For that reason, he is marked for assassination by forces that want the Kingdom to collapse quickly.
Gazef has short black hair and black eyes, an unusual combination in the region due to his southern lineage.
He has an extremely robust, heavily muscled body, and even with a breastplate on, the thickness of his physique is obvious.
The word “burly” fits him more than any other description.
In the anime adaptation, his eyes are depicted more as gray than pure black, and from the second season onward they are drawn with highlights that lend him a softer, kinder expression.
Gazef holds the official position of Warrior Captain of the Re-Estize Kingdom, and his strength underpins the military authority of the royal faction.
Within the Kingdom, his combat ability with the Five Treasures is considered top tier, and even abroad he is feared as a terrifying opponent.
Strictly speaking, Gazef by himself (without magic equipment) falls slightly short of the “hero” rank.
The fearsome reputation he enjoys is based on his combat capabilities when fully equipped with all of the Kingdom’s Five Treasures.
With his full equipment, he can overpower even Hamsuke in its usual condition and surpass the former Black Scripture member Clementine in her current state.
However, if Clementine were to don her full Black Scripture equipment, she would exceed even fully equipped Gazef, and Hamsuke could flip the advantage by using the “Orb of Death,” which it normally treats like a toy.
Gazef is not just strong but also battle-hardened by war.
In the past, when the Kingdom army was on the verge of defeat due to delays in conscription, he spearheaded a counteroffensive and personally slew two of the previous generation’s Four Imperial Knights of the Baharuth Empire, turning the tide of battle and cementing his fearsome reputation.
Though called a “knight” or warrior captain, Gazef does not bind himself to elegant fencing.
For him, the sword is only one means of attack, and in real combat he freely uses his fists, feet, and any “dirty” or pragmatic method to win, describing his style as a “gritty adventurer’s sword.”
Main Martial Arts
Below are some of the key martial skills Gazef is known to use:
Perception of Possibility
A martial art that enhances his sixth sense.
It allows him to perceive danger and react to threats that would be invisible to ordinary warriors.
Critical Point Detection
A technique that identifies weak points on an enemy’s body or defenses.
By exploiting these weaknesses, Gazef can deal far greater damage than a normal strike.
Battle Aura Infusion
He channels battle aura into his weapon, temporarily granting it the properties of a magic weapon.
This allows his attacks to bypass certain defenses that resist ordinary steel.
Instantaneous Recovery
After an attack that unbalances his posture, this martial art snaps his body back to its pre-attack stance.
It greatly reduces openings and prevents enemies from exploiting his recovery frames.
Fourfold Light Slash
An original martial art created by Gazef.
In the instant of a single swing, he unleashes four ultra-fast slashes at surrounding enemies.
This technique trades precision for reach and speed.
Its main weakness is low accuracy, as the distributed slashes are harder to control precisely.
Flowing Acceleration
This martial art temporarily accelerates his nervous system, dramatically increasing his attack speed and overall reaction time.
However, it causes extreme fatigue to accumulate in the brain, limiting how often it can be used safely.
Sixfold Light Slash
Another signature, large-scale original martial art of Gazef.
Just like Fourfold Light Slash, it releases multiple sword strikes in an instant, but this time six slashes instead of four, striking enemies around him at godlike speed.
Like its lesser counterpart, it suffers from low accuracy due to the dispersal of attacks.
It also consumes the concentration equivalent to using three martial arts at once, severely straining his body each time he activates it.
The Five Treasures
Gazef’s status as the Kingdom’s strongest warrior led King Ramposa III to personally authorize him to wield all five of the Re-Estize Kingdom’s legendary magic items known as the “Five Treasures.”
These treasures collectively boost his capabilities to the level associated with his heroic reputation.
From the perspective of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, three of the five are not particularly impressive.
However, one of them, a dragon-crafted ring, ranks as high-grade even by Nazarick standards.
During the 14th volume’s events, when the Kingdom is invaded by the Sorcerer Kingdom, Prince Zanac wears four of the five items, excluding the ring.
After Zanac’s death, those items appear to fall into the hands of Ainz Ooal Gown.
The Five Treasures are:
Amulet of Immortality
This amulet continuously restores the wearer’s health over time.
Functionally, it grants a regeneration effect, steadily healing injuries without the need for rest or healing magic.
Guardian Armor
This adamantite armor, called the Guardian, is imbued with an effect that allows the wearer to avoid a fatal blow.
As a suit of armor, it is made from the hardest metal known in that world, making it top-class equipment even before counting its magic.
Gauntlets of Vitality
These gauntlets nullify fatigue.
With them, Gazef can fight at full strength for extended periods without tiring, which is particularly terrifying in prolonged battles or sieges.
Dragon Heritage Ring (provisional name)
The ring’s true, formal name is unknown.
It is a legendary ring said to let its wearer break beyond the normal limits of a warrior.
This ring was originally a “dragon race treasure” entrusted by the dragon Tsaindorcus Vaision to Rigrit Bers Caurau, one of the Thirteen Heroes and a member of Blue Rose in her time.
Rigrit later gave the ring to Gazef.
Unlike most artifacts, this ring is believed to have been created under unique rules of this world after its mysterious transition, making it an outlier even among powerful magic items.
By Nazarick standards, it ranks on par with top-class equipment.
During the Gehenna operation (the great massacre), Gazef lends the ring to Climb as maximum support.
After the massacre known as the “Great Killing,” Climb ultimately becomes its owner.
Razor Edge
Razor Edge is a magical sword that can ignore various defensive effects and inflict damage directly on the target.
Its special property allows it to bypass abilities that would normally negate physical attacks.
Even Ainz Ooal Gown’s “Greater Physical Immunity,” which automatically nullifies attacks from opponents of level 60 or lower, is ineffective against Razor Edge’s special effect.
Judged purely as a magic item, it is of above-average value even from Nazarick’s demanding perspective.
Because of his devotion to commoners and his refusal to play political games, Gazef is distrusted and disliked by many nobles of the aristocratic faction.
They see him as a dangerous piece on the king’s side of the board, supporting the royal faction through raw military intimidation.
Despite being a pillar of royal military power, he is treated with contempt by such nobles, who underestimate his influence due to his lack of political savvy.
At the same time, foreign forces like the Slane Theocracy target him for assassination, fearing that his presence delays the Kingdom’s collapse.
Gazef’s loyalty to King Ramposa III is absolute.
He consciously chooses not to climb socially as a noble, preferring to remain the king’s sword rather than a scheming lord.
He also cares deeply about the reputation of common-born officers.
Because of the prejudice that “commoners easily betray their masters,” he is determined never to do anything that could confirm this stereotype.
This sense of responsibility ultimately influences his decision when Ainz offers to recruit him.
Rather than accept and be seen as a traitor who abandoned his king at a critical moment, he chooses death.
At first, Gazef mistakenly believes Elias Brandt Dale Raeven (Marquis Raeven) is a corrupt minister.
Due to this misunderstanding, he hates Raeven as if the man were venom or poison, treating him with intense hostility.
Later, the misunderstanding is cleared up, and the two reconcile.
Gazef comes to regard Raeven as a trustworthy ally, and Raeven in turn holds Gazef in high esteem.
Following the resolution of Ainz’s and the Empire’s invasion, Raeven wishes Gazef to be ennobled.
He urges Gazef to stop avoiding politics and stand on the political battlefield as well, arguing that Gazef’s character is needed to reform the Kingdom.
Gazef and Ainz first directly interact during the episode involving border villages attacked by Imperial soldiers.
Gazef leads the royal army to rescue these frontier settlements and encounters Ainz just after Ainz has saved the village of Carne.
Recognizing Ainz as a powerful and honorable figure, Gazef requests Ainz’s cooperation.
Ainz agrees, and from this event on, the two develop a strange mutual respect despite being on opposing sides of the future conflict.
Gazef views Ainz as a noble and upright person, judging him by his deeds in saving villagers.
Ainz, in turn, is impressed by Gazef’s selflessness, courage, and loyalty, finding him genuinely likable.
Later, Gazef fights a group masquerading as Baharuth Empire troops but actually composed of forces from the Slane Theocracy.
He is mortally wounded in the battle, but thanks to a magic item that Ainz had previously given him, he narrowly survives.
Ainz, seeing Gazef as too valuable a talent to waste, attempts to recruit him to his side.
He invites Gazef to become his subordinate, effectively offering him protection and power under the Sorcerer King.
Gazef refuses, citing his loyalty to King Ramposa III and his sense of duty as a common-born hero of the Kingdom.
He understands that joining Ainz might save his life, but it would betray everything he stands for and harm the reputation of common-born warriors.
Instead, Gazef challenges Ainz to a duel—despite knowing the outcome is hopeless.
He does this partly out of loyalty to his king, partly to set an example that commoners do not easily betray their masters, and partly because he cannot bring himself to offer Ainz false loyalty.
Throughout their final interactions, both men treat each other with unfeigned respect.
Ainz acknowledges Gazef’s resolve and even admits that he “did not dislike” Gazef right before casting the spell that ends his life.
During the catastrophic battle later known as “the Great Killing” or “the Great Massacre,” Gazef faces Ainz Ooal Gown in a formal single combat.
The duel is arranged after Gazef rejects Ainz’s offer of recruitment and consciously chooses to stake his life in a last stand.
From a practical standpoint, the duel is entirely one-sided.
The gap in pure power between Gazef and Ainz is enormous, and no realistic strategy can bridge it.
Ainz accepts Gazef’s challenge, understanding that Gazef seeks a meaningful death.
At the start of the duel, Ainz casts a high-level instant-death spell called “True Death,” killing Gazef in a single moment.
Thus, despite his full strength and all his skill, Gazef cannot even land a blow.
However, the duel still yields valuable information about Ainz’s capabilities, which Gazef’s allies later analyze.
Even in death, Gazef remains tactically useful to the Kingdom’s survivors.
The knowledge gained is passed on to Brain Unglaus and Climb, who learn from the circumstances of his demise.
Before his death, Gazef also calculates that his loss might slightly shield King Ramposa III from the people’s resentment.
By dying as the king’s loyal sword in a hopeless battle, he hopes to absorb some of the blame otherwise directed at the monarch after such a devastating defeat.
After the battle, Ainz, moved by his respect for Gazef, chooses not to continue the mass slaughter.
He stops the advance of the Black Goat, the monstrous entity he had summoned, and halts further pursuit of the Kingdom’s forces.
King Ramposa III later asks Lakyus Alvein Dale Aindra to attempt resurrecting Gazef with her resurrection magic.
However, because Gazef was slain by a high-tier instant-death spell, the low-tier resurrection available to Lakyus cannot bring him back.
Gazef’s body is taken to the royal capital and buried in its cemetery with due honor.
Even after his death, his memory leaves a deep impression on Ainz himself.
In volumes 13 and 14, Ainz sees echoes of Gazef’s spirit in Neia Baraja and Climb.
Their devotion, bravery, and willingness to sacrifice remind him strongly of the late Warrior Captain.
In the web novel version of Overlord, Gazef’s fate diverges significantly.
There, after the incident in Carne Village, he encounters Ainz and even participates in a formal match.
In that match, Ainz pits a Death Knight equipped with a tower shield and broadsword—given defensive instructions—against Gazef, who wields a bastard sword as the Kingdom’s strongest warrior.
The battle concludes with Ainz effectively granting victory to Gazef, allowing him to save face and cementing their mutual respect.
Ainz looks forward to meeting Gazef again for another encounter.
However, this hope is shattered when rude behavior by a royal noble’s envoy enrages Ainz, leading him to eliminate the envoy and shift his attention elsewhere.
When envoys from the Baharuth Empire later visit with Emperor Jircniv Rune Farlord El Nix, Ainz’s interest has fully transferred from Gazef to Jircniv.
Additionally, in the web novel continuity, the Slane Theocracy’s special unit (called the Sunlight Scripture in other sources) never attacks Carne Village.
Because that particular attack does not happen, Ainz and Gazef have fewer chances to deepen their relationship.
As a result, their connection is weaker than in the light novel.
In the web novel, Black Goats are summoned and their advance is not halted in the same way as in the published light novel.
The consequences differ: Raevan’s counterpart (Elias Brandt Dale Raeven) dies, whereas in the light novel he narrowly survives.
Gazef himself, however, survives the Great Killing in the web version.
Thus, in that continuity, the Kingdom’s strongest warrior lives on, though his relationship with Ainz never grows as profound as in the printed storyline.
