Eldrie Woolsburg is a male Integrity Knight of the Human Empire in Sword Art Online: Alicization, known as Eldrie Synthesis Thirty-One, wielder of the divine object whip Frostscale Whip and disciple of Alice Zuberg.
Eldrie Woolsburg is the Integrity Knight bearing the number 31 and is considered one of the newest members of the order.
He is voiced in the anime by Takuya Masumoto (Japanese) and is depicted as a handsome, talented young knight.
Publicly, he is said to have been summoned from the “Celestial World” by Quinella one month before Kazuto Kirigaya and Eugeo are taken to Central Cathedral.
Within the Integrity Knight corps he deeply respects Alice Zuberg, calls himself her disciple, and models his conduct on hers.
Despite his short career as a knight, Eldrie is entrusted with the powerful divine object Frostscale Whip, a whip converted from an ancient giant serpent that once lived in the Eastern Empire.
He is portrayed as a proud but earnest knight, whose strong sense of honor matches his considerable combat skill.
Outside of battle he is generally serious and inflexible, and his admiration for Alice can make him lose his cool whenever she is involved.
He obeys orders faithfully at first, but later begins to act more on his own judgment.
Eldrie combines noble upbringing with genuine integrity.
Unlike many corrupt High Nobles, he trains sincerely, respects skill regardless of style, and treats others fairly.
He adores Alice Zuberg to the point of near-worship, seeing her as an ideal knight and mentor.
In reality, he unconsciously projects the image of his lost mother onto Alice, which explains the intensity of his devotion.
This devotion also fuels his hostility toward Kazuto Kirigaya.
Because Kazuto is the one who changes Alice’s heart and priorities, Eldrie initially views him as a dangerous influence and treats him harshly, especially after meeting the unresponsive Kazuto being cared for by Alice.
At first, he is an unquestioning follower of higher authority, reflecting the conditioning of the Integrity Knights.
After the battle at Central Cathedral and exposure to the truth, he gradually becomes more independent and willing to act according to his own values rather than blind obedience.
The heavenly “summoning” story is a fabrication created by Quinella.
Eldrie’s true name is Eldrie Woolsburg, the son of North Empire general Eshdol Woolsburg and thus a scion of a high-ranking noble family of the Norlangarth North Empire.
Before becoming an Integrity Knight, Eldrie was a prodigy swordsman and the North Empire’s representative in the Four Empires Unification Tournament.
He won the tournament, defeating both Sortiliena Serlut and Volo Levantein with exceptionally graceful and refined swordsmanship.
Like all Integrity Knights, Eldrie went through the Synthesis Ritual, which seals away their original memories.
Each knight has memories of someone most precious to them forcibly cut away and turned into a weapon for Quinella’s madness.
In Eldrie’s case, the memories of his mother, Almera, were taken.
His unconscious attraction to Alice is implied to stem from sensing his mother’s warmth and image within her presence, even without remembering Almera directly.
When Kazuto and Eugeo are dragged to Central Cathedral and forced to fight him, Eugeo recognizes Eldrie from the tournament and addresses him by his real name.
This jolts Eldrie’s sealed memories and causes a severe mental shock, leaving him incapacitated during their confrontation.
Later, Integrity Knight leader Bercouli Synthesis One reveals the truth of the Integrity Knights and Quinella’s rule to him.
Shaken but resolute, Eldrie chooses to devote himself to protecting the Human Empire, now acting with a clearer understanding of who he once was.
In the mobile game Sword Art Online: Alicization Blading, Eldrie’s motivations are expanded upon.
He is shown as a dutiful son who strives to become an Integrity Knight partly to obtain treatment for his ailing mother and as a swordsman who genuinely respects Sortiliena’s Serlut-style and Kazuto’s Aincrad-style instead of dismissing them as “unorthodox.”
Eldrie’s signature weapon is the divine object Frostscale Whip, created by object conversion from an ancient serpent of the Eastern Empire.
The whip combines long reach, flexible control, and powerful ice-related properties, making it highly versatile in combat.
He is a top-class swordsman even without relying on his divine object.
His style is characterized by flowing, elegant sequences that dominated the Four Empires Unification Tournament.
As an Integrity Knight, Eldrie can use advanced sacred arts and the Perfect Weapon Control Art of his divine object.
Later, he also unleashes his Memory Release Art, a powerful but dangerous ability that taps into the depth of a knight’s sealed memories.
Eldrie rides a dragon partner named Takigri, a flying dragon that continues to fight bravely even after Eldrie’s death.
Takigri supports aerial mobility, reconnaissance, and direct combat against enemies in the Dark Territory conflict.
Eldrie appears before Kazuto and Eugeo after they escape confinement in Central Cathedral.
He introduces himself as Integrity Knight Eldrie Synthesis Thirty-One and attempts to arrest them as fugitives.
At this stage, he fully believes Quinella’s fabricated memories about his celestial summoning.
He sees Kazuto and Eugeo simply as traitors disrupting the order he swore to protect.
During their duel, Eugeo calls out his real name, Eldrie Woolsburg, and recalls his performance in the Four Empires Unification Tournament.
This direct reminder pierces the enforced memory seal, causing a critical conflict in Eldrie’s mind and leading him to collapse.
Although he does not play the main frontline role in the remainder of the Cathedral raid, his collapse becomes one of the early cracks in the illusion sustaining the Integrity Knights.
After learning the truth from Bercouli, he becomes a devoted defender of the Human Empire in the coming war.
When the war with the Dark Territory finally erupts, Eldrie is deployed as part of the Human Empire’s army.
Despite his skill, he suffers a tactical setback when mountain goblin forces outmaneuver his unit, leaving him ashamed and temporarily shaken.
Alice scolds him sharply, which only deepens his frustration and self-blame.
Even so, he remains determined to protect his “master” and the people under his care.
The Human Empire learns that the resurrected Dark God Vector—Gabriel Miller in the Underworld—seeks the “Priestess of Light,” who is in fact Alice Zuberg.
To protect her and counter Vector’s army, the Human Empire organizes a decoy force centered on Alice and Bercouli, while the rest of the army attempts a pincer attack.
Dark sorcerer Dee Eye Ell unleashes a massive killing spell by sacrificing thousands of allied orcs, creating a gigantic swarm of poisonous insects aimed at Alice and the decoy unit.
Seeing that his master is about to be overwhelmed, Eldrie invokes his Perfect Weapon Control Art and then his Memory Release Art to draw the entire swarm’s spell effect onto himself.
The ritual channels the destructive power of three thousand orcs into a single target.
Even the Frostscale Whip, despite being a divine object, cannot fully withstand the onslaught, and Eldrie’s life force is shredded in moments.
His body is eaten away, and his life total is driven far below zero, yet he refuses to drop the spell.
By holding the swarm to himself until the very end, he protects the Human Empire’s army and, most importantly, keeps Alice alive.
Mortally wounded and with much of his body gone, Eldrie dies in Alice’s arms, weeping over the fact that he never managed to truly remember his mother.
Alice recovers his Frostscale Whip, preserving his legacy as a knight.
Takigri, his dragon, continues to fight alongside Bercouli and Alice, assisting them throughout the remaining battles.
In the end, both Takigri and another dragon, Amayori’s partner Ameuen (Rain’s Edge), are slain by Gabriel Miller; just before Takigri’s death, Kazuto reverts the dragon into an egg, allowing it to continue to exist linked to Alice’s fluctlight.
After Quinella’s defeat and the end of the Central Cathedral incident, Eldrie works under Bercouli to help reorganize the Human Empire’s military forces.
His experience and skills make him valuable even as a relatively “new” knight.
Influenced by his encounter and conflict with Kazuto, Eldrie undergoes a noticeable change.
Where he once simply obeyed orders uncritically, he begins acting based on his own judgment and conscience.
He still deeply admires Alice and continues to address her with great respect.
However, his attitude toward Kazuto remains complicated, mixing gratitude, rivalry, and resentment.
When he later meets Alice traveling with the unresponsive Kazuto after Kazuto loses his heart and will, Eldrie is harsh and strict about how Kazuto is treated.
He is both protective of Alice’s well-being and resentful that she devotes so much care to someone who appears unable to respond.
In the game Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris, Eldrie’s role is expanded and slightly diverges from the original story.
Because the story continues soon after the Central Cathedral incident, Eldrie is heavily unsettled by Quinella’s disappearance and what it means for the world’s stability.
This anxiety amplifies his distrust.
He is openly hostile not only toward Kazuto, whom he sees as a rebel and destabilizing element, but also toward Kazuto’s female companions, the “Kirito Girls,” whom he finds suspicious and hard to accept.
Later, Eldrie challenges Kazuto to a duel in order to test and “see through” him.
Their swords clash in a classic showdown, and Eldrie finally accepts Kazuto after recognizing his resolve, resulting in a reconciliation that never quite happened this clearly in the original storyline.
Ironically, the duel is partly triggered by Eldrie’s bruised pride.
He had been saved by Kazuto in an earlier incident, and as a knight whose confidence is rooted in strength and honor, he lashed out in frustration and insecurity, essentially using the duel as an outlet.
Once his head cools, he realizes that picking a fight out of wounded pride was childish.
He ends up apologizing profusely to Alice for his behavior, while Alice herself is not particularly bothered and even seems slightly annoyed at his over-the-top apologizing.
In the large DLC expansion “Matricaria,” Eldrie receives even more screen time.
Here, he interacts much more with Kazuto’s female allies, leading to many lighter, more comedic scenes.
Eldrie and Asuna Yuuki, in particular, develop a strong connection as people who both care deeply about someone at the center of the conflict.
They become mutual understanding partners, empathizing with each other’s worries and devotion.
At one point, Eldrie gets angry when Kazuto asks Asuna and the other girls to act as decoys, feeling that Kazuto is recklessly putting young women in danger.
He later realizes that they are all strong, capable fighters who can more than handle themselves, and apologizes for being overprotective and underestimating them.
He also agrees to act as rear guard to protect the group as they retreat, showing his growth into a reliable ally who trusts their strength while still honoring his duty to protect.
The others can easily see that he is in love with Alice, and they use this knowledge to coax him into accepting risky roles by praising his devotion to her.
In another scene, he cooperates with Shino Asada (Sinon) to tally the number of enemies defeated.
Eldrie starts counting along with her mid-battle, confusing her careful total, prompting Lisbeth to shout that “a lot” is good enough and making Eldrie burst into laughter at the absurdity.
Since Eldrie is usually stoic and composed, his sudden laughter surprises Asuna and the others.
These moments showcase a more human, playful side to him, contrasting with the stiff knightly persona he shows in formal situations.
Eldrie Woolsburg is remembered as a knight who started as a manufactured “celestial” champion, then reclaimed his humanity through pain, truth, and sacrifice.
His death protecting Alice and the Human Empire, his dragon’s continued struggle, and the recovery of his Frostscale Whip all contribute to his status as a tragic, heroic figure within the Alicization story.
His characterization across different media highlights both his flaws and virtues.
He can be overzealous, prideful, and emotionally tangled, but he is also loyal, courageous, and deeply caring—especially toward Alice and the people he swore to protect.
