Rei Kiriyama’s father. When Rei Kiriyama was an elementary school student, his father died in a drunk driving truck accident, along with his wife and daughter, Chihiro (Rei Kiriyama’s younger sister), while Rei was away on a field trip.
In his youth, Rei Kiriyama’s father aspired to become a professional shogi player and joined the apprentice school, but he left in order to become a doctor and inherit the hospital from his own father (Rei Kiriyama’s grandfather). During his time in the apprentice school, he had a particularly close friendship with Masachika Kōda. Even after taking over the hospital, he continued playing shogi as a hobby. Rei Kiriyama became interested in shogi because of him, which later became the reason why Rei Kiriyama was taken in by Masachika Kōda.
He was considerate of those around him, constantly smiling despite suffering from stomachaches. When deeply absorbed in thought, he had a habit of folding his arms with his left hand resting on his cheek and gently rocking his body.
