Shenlü

Shenlü is a supporting character in The Apothecary Diaries, known for her sharp medical skills and deep, simmering resentment toward the Former Emperor.

She has striking green eyes and was born in the Western Regions, where she originally had brown hair as a child.

She works as the administrator of the clinic built on the northern side of the Rear Palace.

Within both the Rear Palace and the wider imperial court, very few medical personnel can rival her expertise.

Her voice actress in the adaptation is Masako Katsuki.

This casting emphasizes her mature, controlled, yet intense personality.

The clinic that Shenlü manages was originally created under orders from Empress Dowager Anshi.

Its first members were girls around ten years old who had been taken by the Former Emperor, lost any home to return to, and were therefore gathered and kept in the Rear Palace.

Shenlü is one of those original girls.

Her entire life was diverted by the Former Emperor’s whims, and she spent decades confined inside the Rear Palace.

Because of this, she has accumulated a deep and enduring grudge toward the Former Emperor.

This resentment is symbolically described as “dark green,” mirroring both her eye color and the bitterness rooted in her past.

Over time, Shenlü rose to become the effective head of the clinic.

She oversees medical practice, training, supplies, and the daily management of the facility.

As a medical officer, Shenlü is extraordinarily talented.

She is said to be able to identify medicines simply by smelling them, a skill that places her among the very best in the entire court.

Her management of the clinic is also described as exemplary.

Under her leadership, the clinic runs efficiently and maintains a high medical standard.

Beneath this professional competence lies a complex emotional core.

Shenlü outwardly maintains composure, but her life being warped by the Former Emperor has left her with profound anger, frustration, and a desire for retribution.

This resentment influences her choices and aligns her, at least partially, with conspirators opposed to the imperial family.

She is not merely a healer but also a quietly dangerous figure working from within the palace system.

Connection to Lihua’s Pregnancy and the Abortifacient Plot

When Consort Lihua becomes pregnant, Shenlü learns of it.

She also knows that certain mixtures of herbs and aromatic substances can be combined to create an abortifacient.

Shenlü passes this information to Shin, thereby setting the stage for a dangerous scheme.

As a go‑between, she uses a maidservant who works in the Crystal Palace to connect Shin to the necessary resources.

Maomao later analyzes these events and deduces that Shenlü is the one who informed Shin and orchestrated the use of the Crystal Palace maid as an intermediary.

This confirms Shenlü as a hidden player behind the attempt to interfere with Lihua’s pregnancy.

The Clinic as Enemy Territory

At some point, Maomao realizes that the clinic Shenlü runs is effectively enemy territory.

Understanding that staying there is dangerous, Maomao decides she must somehow escape.

However, before she can flee, Suirei appears, having been involved in the failed assassination attempt on Prince Jinshi’s younger brother (Prince Huazuiyue) and disappearing afterward.

Suirei holds Loulan (also rendered as “Kozui” in some sources) hostage to force Maomao’s compliance.

In this confrontation, it is revealed that Shenlü is an ally and comrade of Suirei.

She has been assisting Suirei’s conspiracy from within the clinic, confirming that Shenlü is part of a larger anti‑imperial network.

Suirei demands that Maomao accompany her.

As a result, Maomao vanishes from the Rear Palace, leaving behind a serious crisis.

Discovery by Jinshi and Gaoshun

While searching for Maomao, Jinshi, Gaoshun, and their group track leads related to the conspiracy.

They eventually find Shenlü when she is visiting the grave of a court lady she knew.

This woman had also been taken by the Former Emperor and had connections to Suirei.

The grave visit highlights Shenlü’s lingering ties to other women whose lives were similarly warped.

Jinshi and Gaoshun notice that the alcohol used by Shenlü carries a scent very similar to the alcohol that Maomao used to make.

This clue links Shenlü to the incident in which Maomao disappeared.

Confronted with this evidence, they press Shenlü for Maomao’s whereabouts.

During this confrontation, Shenlü sees Jinshi clearly and realizes how much he resembles the Former Emperor.

She is deeply shaken by the sight of someone who looks almost identical to the man who ruined her life, yet is posing as a eunuch.

She reacts strongly to the fact that “someone who is the living image of the Former Emperor is pretending to be a eunuch.”

Her agitation breaks her composure and exposes her involvement in the plot.

Recognizing that her role in the conspiracy has been uncovered, Shenlü attempts to commit suicide by drinking poison.

Jinshi’s group manages to stop her just in time, and she falls into an unconscious state rather than dying.

Following this, Jinshi places the entire clinic under investigation.

Emotional Impact on Jinshi

Jinshi himself has only ever known the Former Emperor as a frail, emaciated old man.

Shenlü’s shocked reaction to his appearance forces him to confront how closely he resembles the Former Emperor in his youth.

These words shake Jinshi deeply.

He begins to question his own resemblance to the Former Emperor and what that connection might truly mean.

Former Emperor

The Former Emperor is the central source of Shenlü’s trauma and hatred.

He took her as a child, ensuring she could never return home, and confined her to the Rear Palace for decades.

Her life, identity, and choices are all shaped in reaction to what he did to her and to the other girls.

Her deep, dark‑green resentment toward him becomes the emotional engine behind her later actions and alliances.

Empress Dowager Anshi

Empress Dowager Anshi, in an attempt to give these displaced girls a role and some protection, gathered them together and established the Rear Palace clinic.

Thanks to this, Shenlü gained a position and a purpose as a medical professional, even within the confines of her captivity.

Suirei

Suirei is Shenlü’s comrade and co‑conspirator.

They share a common background of being wronged by the Former Emperor and are united by a desire to undermine the current imperial order.

Shenlü supports Suirei’s schemes from inside the palace by providing knowledge, contacts, and cover through the clinic.

Their alliance directly drags Maomao and others into a dangerous political and criminal plot.

Maomao

Shenlü and Maomao are both highly skilled in medicine and pharmacology, which makes their relationship intellectually charged.

However, they stand on opposite sides of the conflict.

Maomao distrusts the clinic once she realizes Shenlü is involved in covert actions against the imperial family.

The disappearance of Maomao, orchestrated through Suirei with Shenlü’s cooperation, turns Shenlü into one of Maomao’s most dangerous indirect adversaries.

Jinshi and Gaoshun

Jinshi and Gaoshun approach Shenlü primarily as investigators searching for Maomao.

Shenlü’s slip, her reaction to Jinshi’s resemblance to the Former Emperor, and the smell of the alcohol she uses all expose her involvement.

For Jinshi, Shenlü becomes an unintended mirror reflecting his own hidden connection to the Former Emperor.

For Gaoshun, she is a critical witness and suspect who links the clinic, the conspiracy, and Maomao’s disappearance.
