Gupta is a male character from Haré+Guu, a flashy and hot-headed young man whose delinquent appearance hides a surprisingly timid side, especially when it comes to airplanes and ghost stories.
Gupta is an easygoing young man with a playful, attention-seeking personality.
He is quick to start fights and looks like a delinquent, but he is also unexpectedly cowardly in certain situations.
He is afraid of things like flying and supernatural tales.
This gap between his tough image and fearful reactions is one of his defining traits.
He is also notably sloppy and not very serious about his studies.
His room is extremely messy, and this becomes significant when it leads to the Ale siblings being brought along during a trip to the city.
Even Haré, who is known as a long-suffering character, sees Gupta as pitiable.
At one point, Haré thinks that he has never seen anyone quite as unfortunate as Gupta, showing that Gupta’s level of bad luck rivals Haré’s own.
Gupta is careless, messy, and often unreliable, but he is also energetic and hard to ignore.
His reckless behavior and tendency to stir up trouble make him a memorable presence in the story.
Although he tries to act cool, his weaknesses are obvious to everyone around him.
That contrast gives him a comedic charm and makes many of his scenes especially entertaining.
He can also be stubborn and dramatic in romance.
Rather than simply confessing his feelings, he strongly wants to be the one confessed to, which makes the people around him view his behavior as a hassle.
Gupta is secretly in love with Ravenna, though “secretly” only from his own perspective.
Everyone except Ravenna is fully aware of his one-sided crush.
His feelings become a repeated source of teasing, especially for Guu, who treats the situation as perfect material for mischief.
His failed attempts and awkward behavior turn his love life into one of his most comedic storylines.
After a failed confession, a slip of the tongue leads to him studying Swahili.
Later, that lie grows even bigger as three more languages are added, and he ends up claiming that his dream is to become a multilingual translator.
At that point, the lie has grown so large that he can no longer back out of it.
Eventually, however, he properly confesses to Ravenna, and the two successfully become a couple.
Gupta is frequently treated as one of the series’ most unfortunate characters.
Things tend to go badly for him in ways that are both absurd and oddly sympathetic.
His messy habits, romantic failures, and constant humiliation all contribute to this image.
Even when he tries to take control of a situation, it often only makes things worse.
That persistent string of misfortune becomes one of his signature roles in the series.
He is the kind of character who suffers so often that it becomes funny, but never stops being a little sad.
In episodes 62 to 63 of Haré+Guu, Guu uses the Tiny Stubby Stick to reverse the sex of people all over the world.
During this event, Gupta is transformed into a lovestruck maiden-like character, so thoroughly changed that he barely resembles his original self.
The transformation is so extreme that Haré remarks that Gupta might have been better off being born a girl.
Among all the gender-swapped characters, Gupta’s new form is especially striking because of how naturally he seems to fit the role.
Even after the general gender reversal is undone, Gupta alone remains in his swapped female state until episode 79.
In publication terms, this status lasted for about a year and a half.
His original sex is only restored when Guu disappears.
This unusual long-term transformation makes Gupta one of the most memorable cases in that storyline.
By the final episode, Gupta is working as a teacher at the jungle school.
This marks a surprisingly stable endpoint for a character so often defined by chaos and misfortune.
