Masataka Irisu is a male character in The Fruit of Grisaia, known as Makina Irisu’s father and the only member of the Irisu family who truly stood on her side; he had already died eight years before the events of the story.
Masataka Irisu was an adopted son-in-law of the Irisu family and worked as an accounting officer in the Administrative Bureau of the Ministry of Defense.
He had once been an elite prospect, graduating from a top national university with excellent marks.
Despite his talent, Masataka was timid and modest in ambition.
Even from his student days, he was dominated by his wife, Kiyoka Irisu, whom he had met while still in school.
Masataka was not a powerful or imposing man, but he had a strong sense of conscience.
Within the Irisu household, which viewed Makina Irisu as nothing more than a tool, he was her only ally.
His greatest defining trait was his remorse.
After becoming entangled in the family’s corruption, he came to regret his position intensely and began to question the very nature of the Irisu family.
Masataka’s life changed drastically after Makina’s birth.
At that point, he became aware of the darker side of the Irisu family, including its corruption and other hidden crimes.
He also realized that he himself had already been incorporated into a vast and corrupt machine.
That revelation pushed him toward resistance rather than obedience.
As his doubts deepened, Masataka took the Irisu family’s secret ledgers and tried to make contact with the Cabinet Intelligence and Research Office.
This act marked his attempt to break away from the family’s criminal structure.
The Irisu family responded by planning his elimination.
To force him into a trap, they arranged Makina’s kidnapping.
The kidnappers demanded that Masataka deliver a ransom of 2 million dollars alone, in cash, and without contacting anyone.
Because the demand came so suddenly, he was only able to prepare 120,000 dollars in cash and 1.5 million dollars in bonds.
Negotiations collapsed.
Masataka was then shot and killed by the kidnappers.
His death was officially processed as an accidental death on paper.
In reality, it was the result of a calculated conspiracy tied to the Irisu family.
Masataka’s body was left in front of the imprisoned Makina Irisu.
Because it was summer, the corpse rapidly decomposed during the six days before she was rescued.
This gruesome end became one of the most tragic parts of Makina’s past.
Even in death, Masataka remained closely tied to the suffering caused by the Irisu family’s cruelty.
