Character Setting

Edit

Morte is a male former beta tester in Sword Art Online who joins a front-line guild from the third floor and secretly operates as a spy for a future player-killer organization, the prototype of Laughing Coffin.

He speaks in an easygoing, optimistic tone, but hides a dangerous mindset that openly accepts and pursues the thrill of murder.

Morte outwardly presents himself as cheerful, relaxed, and optimistic, making him seem like a harmless and friendly front-liner.

Underneath that mask, however, he harbors an extreme and twisted ideology that glorifies killing other players purely for pleasure.

He is calculated and patient, willing to play the long game and cleverly manipulate others to create situations where killing becomes possible.

His calm demeanor in life-and-death situations suggests that he views the death game not as a prison, but as a playground for his darker desires.

Morte is a former beta tester of Sword Art Online who uses his knowledge of the game to gain trust among front-line players.

He officially joins a guild from the third floor onward, positioning himself close to important figures in the early clearing groups.

Using his familiarity with the game systems and quests, he provides accurate and useful information to Lind, one of the leading front-line players.

At the same time, he covertly supports Kibaou, deliberately feeding into the rivalry between Lind and Kibaou’s factions.

Behind the scenes, Morte’s true objective is to engineer deadly conflict between player groups.

He designs situations where disagreements over quest strategies escalate into violent confrontations that can result in actual player deaths.

Morte acts as a spy and agitator for an early player-killer group, which later becomes the model for the notorious guild Laughing Coffin.

His role is not simply to kill players himself, but to create conditions where other players will willingly fight and kill each other.

By providing different pieces of information to Lind and Kibaou, he ensures that both parties approach the same quest with conflicting plans.

He intentionally sets up their encounter so that frustration, mistrust, and anger will erupt into a lethal battle.

Rather than attacking openly, Morte hides behind the guise of a helpful beta tester and guide.

This allows him to move between factions without drawing suspicion, even as he pushes them toward a deadly clash.

During one of these orchestrated quests, Morte crosses paths with Kazuto Kirigaya, known in-game as Kirito, who is also participating in the same quest.

Kirito’s presence and actions start to interfere with Morte’s carefully laid plans.

Seeing Kirito as an obstacle, Morte attempts to eliminate him through a duel.

He intends to exploit loopholes in the game’s duel and combat systems, aiming to kill Kirito in a way that remains technically legal within the rules of the game.

However, his plan is cut short when Lind and Kibaou encounter each other earlier than he anticipated.

Realizing that staying any longer risks exposing his true intentions, Morte retreats before he can be identified as the mastermind behind the conflict.

Morte represents one of the earliest human embodiments of the player-killer mindset in Sword Art Online.

His manipulative actions and ideology foreshadow the rise of more organized and openly murderous PK guilds such as Laughing Coffin.

By using knowledge gained from the beta test to cause chaos, he shows how information can be weaponized in a death game environment.

His character highlights the idea that the most dangerous threats are not always monsters or system traps, but people who exploit the rules for their own enjoyment of killing.
