Margery Daw is a veteran Flame Haze who specializes in combat and stands among the greatest natural talents in the use of Power of Existence-based arts.

She has survived for centuries and built a terrifying reputation by slaughtering Crimson Denizens indiscriminately.

Even among Flame Hazes, who often care more about results than process, her ability is regarded as extraordinary.

She is a "genius" who skips the normal steps and simply produces the result she wants, though that same talent leaves her weak at analyzing detailed spell structures.

At heart, she is a classic avenger.

Her hatred for Crimson Denizens is so intense that she often places killing them above the broader mission of a Flame Haze.

She is also violent toward her own allies when they get in her way or offend her.

Because of this, she is feared not only by Crimson Denizens but sometimes by fellow Flame Hazes as well.

Margery is fundamentally passionate and hot-blooded, but her combat thinking is cool, sharp, and bold.

Even when enraged, she does not become reckless, and she always chooses the most efficient method to kill her enemy.

She has strong judgment and knows when to retreat.

If the odds are poor, she will immediately pull back rather than throw herself away.

In everyday life, she is sloppy, lazy, and fond of drink.

Her drinking habits are bad, yet her alcohol tolerance is not especially high, so she often ends up with hangovers.

She has the air of a seasoned older sister and often listens to other people’s worries and complaints.

She also shows practical kindness, such as giving others bookmarks imbued with prepared spells for useful situations.

Her usual attitude is strict toward boys and gentle toward girls.

She is especially good at giving clear advice to girls in love.

Keisaku Satou and Eita Tanaka admire her as their "boss."

She treats them as her "underlings," but also shows them a harsh kind of affection.

A quote that captures her outlook is: "Tomorrow may never come. If you want to change the painful present, you have to act now. Don’t wait for tomorrow, move now."

Margery is a tall, voluptuous, strikingly beautiful woman of European appearance.

She has chestnut-colored hair and the looks and figure of a top model.

Her appearance suggests a woman in her twenties, despite her true age being several centuries.

She carries her Sacred Treasure, Grimoire, a massive book roughly the size of a drawing board.

During battle, she wraps herself in Toga, a beast-shaped mantle of flame.

In the anime, this form appears as an ultramarine bear.

Margery is an elite sorcerer specializing in free-form spellcraft.

She can improvise highly advanced spells on the spot by chanting spontaneous verses, a technique known as the Improvised Poem of Slaughter.

Her power lies not just in raw strength, but in instant invention.

She can create and control complex sorcery in real time, adapting fluidly to the needs of battle.

Because she reaches outcomes intuitively, she is terrible at the kind of detailed spell decomposition and technical analysis others might perform.

She is brilliant at doing, but not always at explaining.

Her battle garment, Toga, is a squat, beast-shaped cloak of flame that greatly enhances her offensive presence.

At her peak, she can manifest monstrous, multi-headed wolf-like forms fueled by massive amounts of Power of Existence.

Crimson Denizens regard her as a synonym for death.

Her sheer ferocity and efficiency made her infamous across the world.

In her human life, Margery appears to have come from early modern Britain, most likely from a noble family.

Her birth name is never revealed.

Her household fell into ruin after betrayal by others, and she lost everything.

From then on, she lived only for revenge against those who had deceived her and destroyed her life.

When she finally came close to taking revenge, a mysterious silver-flamed Crimson Denizen suddenly appeared.

This being slaughtered all of her revenge targets in front of her, stealing the very meaning of her revenge and looking down on her with what seemed like mocking contempt.

Left near death, she contracted with Marchosias.

From that point onward, she devoted centuries to hunting the being she called the Silver, while killing countless Crimson Denizens along the way.

In the 1930s, she encountered Sydonay in New York.

Both sides lost allies, and the battle ended without a decisive victor.

Two years before the main story, she met Wilhelmina Carmel in Hong Kong.

At the time, Wilhelmina was preparing to enter Central Asia, and Margery heard stories from her about the great war of the medieval era.

Later, while chasing Lamis, Margery arrived in Misaki City and encountered Shana and Yuji Sakai.

She initially clashed with them over what should be done about Lamis.

Lamis then gave her a cryptic message: she should stop chasing the Silver, and when the time came, she would meet it naturally.

That revelation left her emotionally drained for a time, but she recovered during the battle involving the "Beloved Siblings" and Sydonay.

She also showed she could cooperate when needed.

During the effort to stop Dantalion’s experiment, she fought alongside Shana and Khamsin Nbh'w.

Beginning around early May in the main story, Margery came to Misaki City while pursuing Lamis.

After asking Keisaku Satou for guidance, she ended up being admired by both him and Eita Tanaka and stayed mainly at the Satou household.

She appeared to hold the two boys dear in her own way.

Because of them, it seemed unlikely that she would leave for another city anytime soon.

During the out-of-control incident at the school festival, she thoroughly outplayed and crushed the "Manipulator of Myriad Strands," even though her opponent was not at full strength.

She was ultimately stopped by Shana and the others.

Later, Yuji Sakai, now acting as the Snake of the Festival, used a mental attack that exposed the truth behind Margery’s long pursuit.

The Silver was not a real individual enemy at all.

It was actually Scholar’s Crystal 14372 - Tyrant II, a device created by Dantalion.

This machine existed to gather human emotional and behavioral patterns needed to construct a surrogate vessel for the Snake of the Festival, who had been exiled into the Abyss of Eternity.

In simple terms, the Tyrant was a machine built to collect human feelings for the creation of an avatar.

Its true body was a warped silver metal armor plate within the Star Palace, and it could produce countless projections through mirror-image transfer.

These projections were sent to humans with intense emotions.

They would then act exactly as those humans unconsciously wished, gathering samples of feeling and conduct.

The silver flame Margery saw was not a true flame.

It was merely the color of the shadow cast by the Snake of the Festival’s black flame.

What Margery encountered long ago was only one of those projections.

It had been drawn to her intense desire for revenge and simply carried out the actions she herself most deeply wished to see.

Even the mocking expression she believed she saw was not real.

It was a projection of her own desire to eventually look down on and sneer at those she hated.

This revelation shattered her.

She learned that the Silver had never existed as a true independent foe, and that her revenge had actually ended long ago without her understanding it.

With that, the very reason for her existence as a Flame Haze collapsed.

She fell into madness and nearly vanished when her contract was close to breaking.

She was saved by the desperate cries of Eita Tanaka and Kazumi Yoshida.

After that, she remained unconscious and slept in Keisaku Satou’s bedroom at the Satou home, following Kazumi’s suggestion.

Margery later awoke when Keisaku Satou returned from the Tokyo Outpost and kissed her.

It is implied that she had been hearing his voice even before regaining consciousness.

After being seen off by Kazumi Yoshida and Eita Tanaka, she left with Keisaku for Operation Pullback and headed to the Heavenly Road Palace near the battlefield in southwestern China.

There, together with Keisaku and others, she helped prepare the operation entrusted to them by Wilhelmina Carmel.

As the war shifted, she entered the battlefield personally.

After giving Sophie and others a bookmark spell to create a decoy Heavenly Road Palace, she trapped Sydonay inside a multilayered cage of spells.

The trap held for less than three minutes.

She was then recovered from the battlefield by Chiara and Salre and escaped alive.

Later, she traveled with Shana’s group through Hong Kong to New York.

In the side story set there, she worked with her old friend Salre to dismantle and scan a highly complex spell while Shana negotiated with the Three Gods.

During the decisive battle in Misaki City, Margery was secretly delivered inside the true headquarters by the Hyakki Yako.

Avoiding unnecessary combat, she moved through the interior and carried out one of the most crucial support actions of the war.

She rewrote the Grand Psalm, which had been preserved in the Recitation Furnace.

More importantly, she made it impossible to restore the altered Grand Psalm by using backup copies.

After completing her mission, she appeared at the highest level of the headquarters.

When Wilhelmina hesitated, Margery urged her to go after the "Promised Two," while she herself engaged Sydonay.

After the creation of the new world, she explained to Kazumi Yoshida why she had chosen to remain in this world.

Then she resumed her interrupted battle with Sydonay.

Drawing in the enormous quantity of Power of Existence filling Misaki City, she manifested a form beyond even Toga’s berserk state: a many-headed wolf-like monster.

Against the equally gigantic transformed Sydonay, she unleashed a simultaneous all-direction bombardment of flame said to equal the output of tens of thousands of ordinary Flame Hazes, and at last destroyed him.

Two months after Shana and the others departed for the new world, Margery returned to Misaki City in late April with Keisaku Satou.

She was welcomed back by Kazumi Yoshida and Eita Tanaka, and she shared news about the Flame Hazes and the Outposts.

At a flower-viewing gathering on Mount Misaki, she learned from Chigusa Sakai and Kantaro Sakai the origin of the name of Sakai’s child.

Near the end of the event, she produced one of the rings entrusted to her by Shana before the final battle.

This was a ring-type treasure called Corday, containing a prototype communication spell meant to reach the new world.

To people unaware of matters concerning the Crimson World, she referred to it as Saint Edward’s Ring.

Using it under the pretense of a charm that might carry feelings to someone far away, she invited everyone at the flower viewing to join in.
