His wife is Nodoka Saotome, and he made a big promise to her that if Ranma Saotome didn't turn into a manly boy, both of them would commit seppuku.

This led to Genma Saotome and Ranma Saotome traveling on their training journey and not seeing Nodoka Saotome for a long time.

Genma Saotome is the founder of Saotome-style Anything-Goes Martial Arts and is a skilled fighter.

He is especially good at fighting outdoors and adapting to any situation.

He sometimes acts lazy and skips training, but he still knows secret moves that are very strong.

Some of his silly techniques include "Tiger Drop Pose" (which is basically bowing down), "Cry of the Mad Dog" (like howling in defeat), and "Cradle of Hell" (a smothering hug).

He also knows powerful special moves that he calls "forbidden arts."

When Genma turns into a panda, his fighting skills stay about the same.

Sometimes, he even uses his panda form to trick or escape from people.

As a panda, he can survive by eating bamboo in the wild.

Genma Saotome is best friends with Soun Tendou.

The two of them promised to make their children marry each other, and Genma tries his best to keep this promise.

Even though Genma usually breaks promises, he works hard to see that Ranma Saotome and Akane Tendou get together.

He has a real bond with Soun Tendou, and the two help each other out, especially when one is in trouble.

Genma Saotome turns into a panda when splashed with cold water, and sometimes he likes being a panda because it helps him avoid responsibility.

When he's a panda, he gets attention for being cute and even uses it to get free things or survive tough times.

In live-action versions, his panda form is loved by others and even brings him good luck.

Because of this, a lot of people are upset with him or chase him down for revenge.

To his wife, Nodoka Saotome, Genma Saotome promised that both he and Ranma Saotome would commit seppuku if Ranma Saotome didn't become a manly boy.

This huge promise forced Genma Saotome and his son to stay away from her to avoid facing the consequences.

Whenever Nodoka Saotome plans to visit, Genma Saotome panics and tries to hide.

Friendships and Rivalries

Even though he causes problems, Genma Saotome does value his friendship with Soun Tendou.
