Training at the Unified Class
Saki goes to a special school called the Unified Class, where she learns to use Cantus. She is part of "Group One" with the main characters.
While on a summer camp, she and her friends accidentally hear the forbidden history of their world from Minoshiro Modoki. Because of this, a monk named Rijin freezes their powers as punishment and takes them away.
Attacked by Monster Rats
While being taken away, Saki and her friends are attacked by an outsider monster rat colony called "Ground Spiders." Rijin is killed in the attack, and the children, with their powers locked, must try to escape.
Saki and Satoru Asahina are captured but use their quick thinking to get away. They are then helped by Squealer from the "Robber Fly" colony, who is an enemy of the Ground Spiders.
Even though Saki faces many scary things, she manages to unfreeze Satoru's power with her brains. They survive the battles between monster rat colonies and finally make it home after reuniting with their friends.
School Life After the Camp
Two years later, Saki is back to normal school life. She grows her hair longer and changes her appearance more than any of her friends.
During this time, teenagers are encouraged to form romantic bonds with friends of the same gender, and Saki becomes Maria Akizuki’s girlfriend. Still, she cannot forget Shun.
One day, Saki notices Shun acting strangely and goes with friends to investigate. They learn Shun is in danger and Saki tries to save him alone, but he has become a Karma Demon. Shun shares his feelings with Saki before sending her away with his powers.
Winter Challenges and Disappearances
Time passes to winter. The class is choosing boy-girl pairs for duties, which really is a way to make couples. Ryou Inaba shows a lot of interest in Saki, but she and others feel something is missing in their memories.
Saki is called to the Ethics Committee by its leader, Tomiko Asahina, who talks about strange feelings in their memories and the truth about Karma Demons and Fiends. Tomiko says Saki is a strong candidate to become her successor.
Afterwards, Saki trusts her strange memories are correct, rejects Ryou, and chooses Satoru as her partner.
Searching for Missing Friends
Later, Saki and friends learn that Mamoru Itō has run away from home. Saki, Satoru, and Maria work together to search for him without alerting the school.
They find Mamoru in the snowy mountains, but he has already been attacked by a False Minoshiro (a sign of his planned removal by the society). Saki and Satoru go back to the town to try to save him, but even with Tomiko's help, they only get three days to bring him back.
When they return, both Mamoru and Maria are gone. With help from Squealer’s colony, they try to search for them but fail. They find only a farewell letter from Maria, leaving Saki heartbroken.
