He was saved by Fitzgerald when he was about to commit suicide after being falsely accused of the murder of his friend, George B. Wilson.

His name is derived from T. J. Eckleburg, a character in Fitzgerald's work "The Great Gatsby". The name of his murdered friend is also the same as a character in the same work.
