Sorata Kanda

The protagonist of the story. A resident of Room 101 in Sakura Dormitory, he is in Class 2-1 of the general course, later moving to Class 3-1 (from Volume 7). He was expelled from the regular dormitory, where pets are prohibited, for keeping a cat, and has been living in Sakura Dormitory since the summer of his first year. He loves cats and lives with stray cats. In his room, he keeps a white cat named Hikari and a black cat named Nozomi.

In the spring of his second year, he is assigned the duty of taking care of Mashiro, who moved into Sakura Dormitory. Witnessing Mashiro's talent, he discovers his own aspirations and aims to become a game designer. He grows by exchanging opinions with Ryūnosuke and Jin, and becomes capable of creating highly polished works.

In Sakura Dormitory, he often plays the role of the sensible one and the straight man. According to Shiori, his basic standard for judgment is "Sakura Dormitory," and although Sorata calls himself "ordinary," he interacts with the eccentric Misaki and Ryūnosuke without discrimination from the day he moved in, and takes good care of the dysfunctional Mashiro. Therefore, Jin and Nanami consider him "not ordinary at all." Later, after seeing Sorata's quirky parents and his sister Yuko, Nanami remarks, "I think I understand why Kanda-kun adapted to Sakura Dormitory."
