Character Setting

Edit

Ryo Shishido is a third-year student at Hyotei Academy and a key member of its tennis team, famous for his passionate spirit and his undefeated doubles partnership with Chotaro Ohtori.

Originally, Ryo had long hair that he tied into a single ponytail.

After his defeat in the Tokyo Tournament, he cut his hair short to symbolize his determination to rejoin the regular team.

He now has short hair and is almost always seen wearing a blue cap backward.

Ryo has a bandage on his left eyebrow and his body is covered in scars, a testament to his rigorous training with Chotaro Ohtori.

Initially, Ryo came across as provocative and often belittled his opponents.

However, a significant loss forced him to mature, and he developed into a passionate and highly ambitious individual.

He is a hard-working and stoic person with a strong sense of honor.

His signature catchphrase is "Gekidasa!" ("Super Lame!").

In *The New Prince of Tennis*, he modifies his catchphrase slightly to "Choi Dasa" ("A Bit Lame").

Despite being a student at the affluent Hyotei Academy, his background as a teacher's son gives him a more down-to-earth and relatable perspective.

Ryo Shishido is a third-year student at Hyotei Academy.

He is childhood friends with his teammates Gakuto Mukahi and Jiro Akutagawa.

When he was five years old, he saved a four-year-old Chotaro Ohtori from drowning in the ocean in Okinawa.

He is very dedicated to his training, with his daily routine including strength training and boxing exercises.

Playing Style

Ryo is a counter-puncher who excels with his phenomenal reaction speed and dynamic visual acuity.

His playstyle capitalizes on his explosive agility and leg strength to turn defense into offense.

He developed an incredible "Dash" ability that allows him to move so fast it resembles teleportation, always putting him in the perfect position for a counter.

This instantaneous movement is always accompanied by a "Vworp" sound effect.

Ryo shares an incredibly strong bond with his doubles partner, Chotaro Ohtori, whom he cares for deeply.

Their partnership is considered the strongest in Hyotei, and they have never lost an official match together.

He is childhood friends with Gakuto Mukahi and Jiro Akutagawa.

Keigo Atobe vouched for Ryo's return to the regular team after witnessing his intense training and determination.

Recently, he's been curious about the high schoolers Tonpei Hirari and Kōsuke Tenjin getting close to Ohtori, but he can't bring himself to ask about it directly.

Tokyo Tournament Arc

In the quarterfinals of the Tokyo Tournament, Ryo faced Kippei Tachibana in the Singles 3 match.

He was defeated soundly, which led to his removal from the Hyotei regular team by Coach Sakaki Tarou.

Kanto Tournament Arc

Determined to return, Ryo defeated the then-regular Haginosuke Taki in an unofficial match.

Although Coach Sakaki did not immediately reinstate him, Ryo pleaded desperately, cutting his hair in front of the coach to show his resolve.

Chotaro Ohtori supported him with intense training, and Keigo Atobe, who witnessed their efforts, recommended his return.

Ryo was successfully reinstated as a starter for the Kanto Tournament, now forming a doubles pair with Ohtori.

In the Kanto Tournament, he and Ohtori played as Doubles 1 against Seigaku's Sadaharu Inui and Kaoru Kaidō.

They initially dominated with Ohtori's Scud Serve and Ryo's Super High-Speed Rising Counter.

Although Inui's data tennis allowed Seigaku to rally back, Ryo's incredible speed allowed him to chase down and return Kaidō's Boomerang Snake, winning the match 6-3.

Sumire Ryūzaki of Seigaku even commented that there was no pair in her school that could defeat Shishido and Ohtori.

National Tournament Arc

At the National Tournament, Ryo and Ohtori faced Seigaku's legendary Golden Pair, Shūichirō Ōishi and Eiji Kikumaru.

They countered their opponents' "Australian Formation" and eventually won in a tense tie-break, even after the Golden Pair achieved "Synchronization."

The New Prince of Tennis

During the U-17 training camp, Ryo called Ohtori's act of sharing tennis balls with Tonpei Hirari and Kōsuke Tenjin "a bit lame."

He later faced Ohtori in a tie-break match to determine who would be dropped from the camp.

Despite returning every one of Ohtori's powerful Scud Serves, Ryo ultimately lost the match.

Afterward, he encouraged a self-doubting Ohtori, telling him to "Go on with confidence."
