Akutsu first appears as a vicious person who uses violence to dominate others.

He has a rebellious nature, stemming from a unique upbringing, and despises being told what to do.

Initially, his crude behavior was prominent, and he was even shown smoking as a middle schooler in the manga.

Despite his delinquent persona, he possesses a caring and considerate side, often looking out for others in his own rough way.

This is seen when he guides his admirer, Taichi Dan, and encourages his old friend, Takashi Kawamura.

He has an excellent memory, surprisingly good grades with no weak subjects, and has even been shown tutoring Taichi.

Akutsu was raised in a special family environment with a very young mother.

He and Takashi Kawamura are childhood friends who attended the same karate dojo.

Blessed with immense natural talent, he could effortlessly defeat a semi-pro in tennis by the 5th grade.

Two months before the Tokyo Prefectural Tournament, coach Mikiya Banda spotted him swinging a racket and recruited him to the tennis club.

Akutsu is a natural-born athlete with an ideal muscular structure, allowing him to excel in any sport.

He is considered a tennis prodigy, the kind that appears only once in a decade.

His most remarkable talent is the ability to forcefully change the direction of a shot even after the ball has made contact with his racket.

Tennis Style

His playstyle is "Mute-katsuryu," a self-taught, freestyle form of tennis.

It relies on his extraordinary physical abilities, allowing him to play in unorthodox and seemingly impossible positions.

He can return any shot with speed and power by reading his opponent's movements at the last second.

While his play looks reckless, it's a highly aggressive and technical style focused on hitting winners.

Initially, he lacked refined techniques due to a lack of practice, but this also meant he had limitless potential.

In *The New Prince of Tennis*, his high absorption ability allows him to master techniques from top high school players like Hōō Byōdōin and Jūjirō Oni.

Mumoshiki (The 8th Sense)

This is a state Akutsu awakened during his U-17 World Cup match against Alexander Amadeus.

Referred to as the 8th sense, it's a state achieved when pushed to the absolute limit.

It allows him to create afterimages, showing up to 10 different attack patterns simultaneously.

This prevents the opponent from predicting his true shot until the last moment.

While incredibly effective, this technique puts an immense strain on his legs.

Akutsu has a complex but meaningful relationship with his childhood friend, Takashi Kawamura.

He acts as a gruff mentor to Taichi Dan, who idolizes him.

He was scouted by his coach, Mikiya Banda, who recognized his latent talent.

Kiyosumi Sengoku's encouragement was a key factor in his decision to study abroad.

His rivalry with Ryoma Echizen was the catalyst that ignited his passion for tennis.

The Prince of Tennis

Akutsu is introduced as the final boss of the Tokyo Prefectural Tournament arc.

He showcases his super-aggressive tennis against Ryoma Echizen in the finals, even heeding advice from Coach Banda.

After a fierce battle, he is defeated by Ryoma.

Feeling satisfied after fighting with all his might, he quits the tennis team.

He later decides to study abroad in America, pushed by Kiyosumi Sengoku.

Despite his rough exterior, his kinder side emerges. He shows Taichi Dan the path he should follow and encourages Takashi Kawamura.

During the National Tournament, he catches a blasted-away Kawamura with one hand and motivates him with the words "Go die," meaning "Don't give up."

He also appears on court during the final match to help Ryoma regain his lost memories.

In an anime-only arc, he challenges a slumping Ryoma to a street match, helping him break out of it with harsh but effective words.

The New Prince of Tennis

After training overseas, Akutsu returns to participate in the U-17 selection camp.

He defeats Takashi Kawamura in a tie-breaker match to stay in the camp.

He teams up with Genichiro Sanada for a 1st string replacement match but they are defeated.

Despite the loss, he is selected as a member of the Japan U-17 World Cup team.

U-17 World Cup

He is placed on "Team Ume" for the group stage and insists on playing S3 against Alexander Amadeus, against Hōō Byōdōin's orders.

He attacks with "Luminous" shots but is overwhelmed by Amadeus's "Darkness."

In a daze, he awakens his ultimate state, "Mumoshiki," and manages to win one game.

However, he is forced to retire from the match due to the physical toll and, honoring his promise to Byōdōin, decides to return to Japan.

In fan communities, he is sometimes called "cabbage" due to his hair.

The game "Form the Strongest Team!" gives him an initial friendship rating of zero with nearly every character except a select few like Kawamura and Dan.
