Isshin Matoi is the father of Ryuuko Matoi, and an important figure in the story of Kill la Kill. He is known for his role as a scientist studying Life Fibers, his mysterious and eccentric appearance, and the secret past connecting him to the Kiryuuin family. He appears to die at the start of the story, inspiring Ryuuko to seek revenge. However, more is revealed about his true identity, his past actions to protect his daughters, and his fight against Ragyou Kiryuuin. Isshin is a key figure behind the creation of Senketsu and the Nudist Beach organization, and his decisions shape much of the adventure.
Isshin Matoi looks like a man in his 60s, with a beard, an eye patch over his right eye, a white lab coat, and a hunchbacked posture.
He always wears Japanese wooden clogs and carries a cane in one hand.
He is often seen with a mouse sitting on his left shoulder.
His appearance is like a classic "mad scientist."
He is deeply focused on his research, often ignoring his family and home life.
Because of this, his relationship with Ryuuko Matoi is distant.
Even so, he cares for her in his own way, trying to protect her from danger.
Isshin Matoi once worked as a Life Fiber researcher for the Kiryuuin family.
He was an outstanding scientist, marrying into the family to help with their experiments.
However, after his second daughter, Ryuuko, was rejected as a failed experiment and ordered to be discarded, he was furious.
He rescued her, faked his own death, and changed his name and look, becoming "Isshin Matoi" and raising Ryuuko himself.
He used his knowledge to create Senketsu and started the Nudist Beach organization to fight against Ragyou Kiryuuin.
As a scientist, Isshin Matoi is a genius, especially with Life Fiber technology.
He created powerful inventions like Senketsu.
His lab coat was actually a shape-memory Life Fiber Kamui, giving him fighting ability in dangerous situations.
- Ryuuko Matoi: His daughter. Though distant, he loved and wanted to protect her. He left her with family or in dorms so he could focus on research. He handed her the Scissor Blade before his death.
- Satsuki Kiryuuin: His other daughter. Ryuuko and Satsuki are actually sisters, making Isshin/Souichirou their father.
- Ragyou Kiryuuin: His wife and main antagonist. Their relationship turned bitter because of her cruel Life Fiber experiments.
- Nudist Beach: He founded this group to fight against Ragyou and the threat of Life Fibers.
The Mysterious Scientist
Isshin Matoi and Ryuuko lived in a mansion overlooking Honnouji Town.
He worked alone, doing secret experiments in his underground lab.
He was not around much and sent Ryuuko away to live elsewhere.
The Attack and His Death
Six months before the story starts, Isshin suddenly called Ryuuko back home.
When she arrived, she found him dying, stabbed with the red Scissor Blade.
With little time left, he warned her to leave if she wanted a peaceful life, or to chase his killer for a tough life full of danger.
He gave her the Scissor Blade, urging her to pick her own path.
The House Fire
While Ryuuko chased the attacker, the house caught fire.
She never got to hear Isshin's last words.
In the ruins of the house, Ryuuko found Senketsu and took up her father’s fight, seeking revenge.
The True Identity
Later in the story, it is revealed Isshin Matoi was actually Satsuki's father, Souichirou Kiryuuin.
He was Ragyou’s husband and changed his name and appearance after fleeing the Kiryuuin house.
After saving Ryuuko, he started Nudist Beach and built Senketsu as a weapon to oppose Ragyou.
Fighting Needles
During an attack by Nui Harime, Isshin managed to damage her, taking her left eye, but received deadly wounds.
Despite being physically weak, he could still hold his own in dangerous moments thanks to his Life Fiber coat.

Isshin Matoi's actions guide much of Kill la Kill’s story, even after his death.
