Jou Edogawa is a lively and hardworking girl, known as the self-proclaimed rival and close friend of Sasami Tsukuyomi. She first appears in the third volume of Sasami-san@Ganbaranai and quickly becomes a key member of the story. Despite her tough exterior and big dreams, Jou is soft-hearted and struggles to act like a true villain. She is the class president and student council president at Sakurano Sakuya Academy, and also the leader of the shady occult organization called "Arahaba-ki." Jou hides a mysterious power: she can consume and absorb gods. One of her unique traits is her male form at night. Throughout the story, she faces many dangers but always finds support from her friends.
Jou Edogawa is energetic and has a tomboyish style. She is known for her confident and lively presence among her classmates. At night, her body changes and she takes on a more masculine form.
Jou is very hardworking and always puts in effort, unlike Sasami who is more laid-back. She is bold, talkative, and does not shy away from challenges. Jou loves to laugh with a “kukkukku” sound, which makes others think she might have a little bit of a “chuunibyou” personality.
Although she calls herself Sasami’s enemy, she actually cares for her a lot and values her friends deeply. Jou is passionate about her goals, but she cannot truly become a bad person, showing her softer side.
Jou is a student in the second year, left class, at Sakurano Sakuya Academy. She is both the class president and the student council president. She is also the daughter of the leader of the occult organization "Arahaba-ki," and becomes its acting leader in her father's absence.
Her mother figure was Tamamo no Mae, who deeply influenced Jou when she was young. After Tamamo disappears, Jou teams up with Sasami to try to bring her back.
Jou is the host for the divine spirit known as "Matsurouwanu Mono Arahaba-ki." This gives her the power to eat and absorb gods, making her very powerful. At night, Jou's body changes into a male form. She also takes on leadership roles at school and in "Arahaba-ki."
- Sasami Tsukuyomi: Jou sees Sasami as her rival and also as her friend. Although Jou often challenges her, Sasami does not see Jou as an enemy.
- Kagami Yagami: The two are rivals over Sasami’s friendship.
- Tamamo no Mae: Jou’s mother figure. Jou is deeply bonded to her and works with Sasami to restore Tamamo.
- Arahaba-ki leader: Jou’s father, whom she wants to live up to, but she is hurt deeply when he abandons her.
- Kamiomi Tsukuyomi: Believes Jou is "chuunibyou" because of her behavior.
Arrival and Becoming Friends
Jou Edogawa first appears in volume 3, introducing herself to Sasami Tsukuyomi and asking to be friends. She quickly becomes Sasami’s next close friend after Kagami Yagami.
Rivalry and School Life
Although Jou claims to be Sasami’s enemy, Sasami doesn’t see her that way. Instead, they become good friends, with Jou often getting involved in competitions for Sasami’s attention, especially with Kagami. At school, Jou is the class leader and student council president.
The Power of Arahaba-ki
Jou becomes the acting leader of the occult group "Arahaba-ki," taking her father’s place and being entrusted with the spirit "Matsurouwanu Mono Arahaba-ki.” This power lets her consume gods, and Jou dreams of conquering the world and becoming the one true god.
Tamamo no Mae and the Mission
After Tamamo no Mae, Jou’s mother figure, disappears with Kamiomi Tsukuyomi, Jou teams up with Sasami to bring Tamamo back, giving her a motivation beyond world conquest.
Father’s Betrayal
In volume 7, Jou’s father returns but cruelly abandons her, leaving Jou hurt physically and mentally. However, with Sasami, Tamamo, and Kagami’s help (who shares a similar fate with Arahaba-ki’s interventions), Jou recovers and regains her hope.
- Jou’s laugh, “kukkukku,” is often described as witch-like.
- Many characters mistakenly think she has "chuunibyou" because of her dramatic behavior.
- Despite her ambitions, Jou is too kind to truly become evil.
- “Let’s be friends, Sasami!”
- “Kukkukku!” (Witch-like laughter)
Jou is a character full of energy and hope, whose journey is shaped by her friendships, leadership, and dreams of greatness. Despite tough moments and her role as a "villain," she always ends up doing what is right.
