Goro Arashiyama

Goro Arashiyama is a hot-blooded young lifeguard whose sense of duty and personal purpose are centered on keeping the beach safe.

He is portrayed as dependable in his job, physically fit, and deeply committed to training even on his days off.

He has a muscular build and tanned skin from working outdoors, and he is usually seen in swimwear while on duty.

His strong body is the result of daily physical training, which he keeps up consistently.

Goro is Eiko Aizawa’s childhood friend.

He is also in love with Chizuru Aizawa, and that crush is so obvious that both Eiko and Chizuru often use it to manipulate him.

Goro is straightforward, earnest, and somewhat simple-minded.

Because of that, he is frequently tricked or pushed around by Eiko Aizawa, Chizuru Aizawa, and even Squid Girl.

Despite being clumsy in romance and not especially skilled with his hands, he has a very strong sense of justice and responsibility.

This seriousness is what makes him reliable as a lifeguard, even when his personal life turns into a joke at his expense.

He is popular with women, but he has no interest in anyone except Chizuru Aizawa.

His devotion to her is absolute, even when it makes him look ridiculous.

Goro’s feelings for Chizuru Aizawa are one of his defining traits.

He owns many secretly taken photographs of her, and his mobile phone wallpaper is also a photo of Chizuru.

This was eventually discovered, but Chizuru let him off with only a warning not to misuse the pictures.

Even so, this habit shows both how intense and how awkward his affection can be.

At one point, he had the chance to go on a date with Chizuru.

He became so anxious over what kind of clothes she might like that he asked Squid Girl to find out her preferences for him.

His favorite food is shrimp fried rice made by Chizuru.

Unfortunately for him, Squid Girl, who loves shrimp, often sneaks in and eats only the shrimp out of it.

Goro and Squid Girl initially bonded over the shared idea of being protectors of the sea.

Because of that, he came to regard her with a measure of respect as someone who watches over the ocean.

Their relationship changed after Squid Girl rescued a drowning child in Goro’s place.

Rather than praising her as she expected, he treated her like a junior or lesser figure and complimented her in a way that irritated her.

According to Squid Girl, what upset her was that after saving a child, she expected to be revered by Goro.

Instead, she felt she had been looked down on and praised condescendingly.

From that point on, Squid Girl often challenged him to contests.

However, the actual outcome of these matches usually became secondary, which only made her resent him more each time.

Even so, Goro personally continues to think highly of Squid Girl as someone who helps protect the sea.

After their early friction, their relationship is generally on good terms.

When Squid Girl once tried to tan herself by imitating humans, Eiko Aizawa told her that Goro was a perfect example of a completed tan.

Squid Girl hilariously misunderstood this and concluded that getting tanned would make her muscular and turn her into a perfected form.

As a lifeguard, Goro is trustworthy and capable when it really matters.

His dedication, training, and strong moral sense make him one of the more dependable human characters in the series.

At the same time, he has a comical weakness: he is frightened by non-human beings such as ghosts and aliens.

This creates an amusing contrast with his otherwise heroic image.

Goro lives in an apartment with his mother.

His mother also appears in the story and is notably drawn as a realistically middle-aged, heavyset woman with wrinkles, which is somewhat unusual for this kind of series.

Goro calls Squid Girl simply “Ika,” meaning “squid.”

This nickname reflects his blunt and uncomplicated way of speaking.

His appearance, personality, and behavior make him both admirable and funny.

He is a classic earnest hero type, made memorable by his one-track love, gullibility, and unwavering devotion to protecting the sea.
