Character Setting

Edit

Squid Girl is the female protagonist of the manga and anime Squid Girl, a mysterious would-be invader from the sea who comes to the surface to punish humanity for polluting the ocean, only to end up working at a beach house instead.

Squid Girl is a girl from the deep sea whose exact origins and biology remain largely unknown.

She arrives on land with the goal of conquering humanity, or more precisely, the surface world.

Her first target is the beach house Lemon, chosen simply because it is the closest place to the sea.

Her invasion fails immediately, and after breaking a wall, she is forced to work there for extremely low pay to cover the repair costs.

She spends her days carrying out jobs under the orders of the Aizawa sisters, especially Eiko Aizawa and Chizuru Aizawa.

However, whenever something fun appears, she quickly gets distracted and neglects her duties.

At first, she stays at Lemon, but later moves into the Aizawa household after Chizuru suggests it.

Although the Aizawa sisters are initially cold toward her, they gradually begin to treat her like a member of the family.

Despite wanting to be feared as a conqueror, she often forgets that she is supposed to be an invader at all.

She becomes so familiar with life on land that she sometimes loses sight of why she came there in the first place.

She is also appointed leader of the so-called Invasion Club, a group she created on a whim.

In practice, its "invasions" usually turn into outings and casual adventures with friends.

Squid Girl usually wears a white dress, and underneath it she always has on a white school swimsuit.

She wears boots on bare feet.

Her most distinctive feature is the white squid-like cap on top of her head.

This cap is not clothing but part of her body, and she claims that removing it would kill her.

The fin-like side flaps on the cap can move freely according to her will.

They can also serve as weapons and are strong enough to blow away someone as heavy as Sanae Nagatsuki.

Her blue hair is integrated with ten tentacles.

These tentacles are highly dexterous, extremely sharp, and capable of both delicate manipulation and destructive cutting.

They can stretch and contract freely, and even if severed, they regenerate completely by the next day.

Because she can do almost everything with her tentacles, her ordinary human-like limbs are comparatively clumsy.

She can also spray squid ink from her mouth.

According to the source material, the ink tastes surprisingly good.

Like a firefly squid, she can emit light from her entire body.

The brightness does not seem finely adjustable, so it works more like a blinking dazzle effect than a proper flashlight.

Squid Girl is physically and biologically extraordinary.

Her tentacles can smash through wooden walls, and in the anime they are even shown shattering rock with a single strike.

When swung like blades, the tentacles can cut with an edge comparable to an axe.

She can also swim effortlessly underwater, though it is noted that she cannot swim properly without her tentacles.

She wears blue bracelets on both arms that control her body weight.

These devices let her increase or decrease her weight in order to strengthen her tentacles or alter her sinking and rising speed underwater.

The bracelets function like counterweights for her tentacles.

Because extending them creates leverage that effectively lightens her body, she normally keeps herself somewhat heavier to maintain stability and force.

Her learning and adaptation abilities are exceptional.

Even though she is ignorant of many things in human society, she can quickly master English conversation, mathematics, and the operation of machines.

She is shown skipping elementary and middle school mathematics entirely and solving first-year high school math problems mentally with perfect accuracy.

In the anime, she even learns university-level mathematics within a few hours.

She also adapts quickly to modern devices.

Even when handling a mobile phone or digital camera for the first time, she is able to use them with ease.

Squid Girl speaks in a distinctive manner and constantly adds squid-themed verbal quirks to her speech.

Her tone is slightly arrogant, and she usually addresses others bluntly and without honorifics.

She often refers to people with rough second-person terms such as "you" in a commanding or superior tone.

Even so, she is not truly intimidating most of the time.

She is fearless around strangers and can interact casually even with people she has just met.

For reasons beyond her own control, she is especially beloved by children.

She often plays with Takeru Aizawa and his group.

Although she wants to be seen as a terrifying invader, she naturally comes across as charming, funny, and approachable.

Squid Girl's stay at Lemon slowly changes her.

Instead of conquering humanity, she ends up becoming part-timer, housemate, neighborhood celebrity, and accidental friend to many people.

Her relationship with the Aizawa family is especially important.

What begins as a punishment arrangement develops into a warm found-family dynamic.

She also becomes a familiar presence in the local community.

Children adore her, and even many adults grow used to her odd behavior and ocean-themed declarations.

Although she wants to look brave, Squid Girl has clear weaknesses.

Sharks and orcas terrify her more than anything, as they are natural predators from the sea.

She also views certain humans as dangerous.

In particular, she considers Sanae Nagatsuki and Cindy Campbell to be especially hazardous.

Squid Girl is the central character of Squid Girl.

Her name is her real name and a proper noun, not a nickname.

Her voice actress is Hisako Kanemoto.

The role became so iconic that Squid Girl is widely regarded as one of Kanemoto's signature characters.

According to creator Masahiro Anbe, her design was intended to resemble a girl around 13 to 14 years old.

Her target is specifically the surface world, not the entire Earth, a distinction she repeatedly emphasizes.

A common interpretation gives her height as 135 cm, based on an early prototype setting.

That would make her notably short for a girl of her apparent age.

Her first recorded weight is 100 kg.

Although Chizuru claims the scale was broken, she then splits the scale in half, strongly suggesting it may have been accurate after all.

Her body can be made so light that even a hair dryer can blow her away.

At the opposite extreme, she can become massively heavy.

She was featured in a collaboration during the 2011 Super GT motorsports season on a Ferrari-based themed race car.

The commentator Pierre Kitagawa repeatedly emphasized her name and squid-related phrasing during broadcasts, making the car memorable even beyond its team and model.

She also appeared on packaging for the snack brand Yotchan Ika.
