Gobta is one of the first goblins Rimuru Tempest meets after reincarnating and is among Rimuru’s earliest subordinates.
After receiving a name from Rimuru, Gobta evolves into a hobgoblin, but unlike most of the other goblins, his appearance barely changes, retaining his round face and round nose.
He speaks in an extremely casual, easygoing way and refers to himself as “Oira” in the original language, giving him a goofy, laid-back impression.
Within the story he functions as a mood-maker: he is airheaded, loves being praised, and quickly gets carried away, but his lovable personality makes him popular with those around him.
Despite his clownish behavior, Gobta is actually a natural-born combat genius.
He masters skills simply by experiencing them once—after taking a single spinning kick from Rimuru, he copies the move, and he quietly learns to use Shadow Movement on his own.
Shadow Movement originally belongs to Ranga and the Tempest Star Wolf tribe.
Gobta learning it without direct instruction, despite having almost no direct connection to the wolves, is described as highly abnormal and a sign of his hidden talent.
Hakurou recognizes Gobta’s potential and subjects him to harsh training.
Gobta endures with surprising perseverance, growing stronger especially whenever he is cornered—such as being forced to eat Shion’s terrifying home cooking or stepping on various “land mines” through his thoughtless comments.
Among Rimuru’s earliest followers, Gobta alone continues to address Rimuru in a casual, relaxed tone rather than formal speech.
Over time this establishes him as something like an old friend or bad influence from Rimuru’s perspective—someone Rimuru can relax around regardless of status.
When Rimuru later establishes the Twelve Guardian Lords, Gobta is granted a special “right” by Rimuru: the privilege to keep talking to Rimuru as casually as he always has.
Rimuru grants this partly because Gobta’s evolution as a race has reached its limit and partly because Gobta genuinely struggles with polite speech, but also because Rimuru values having someone he can be informal with.
Gobta is overjoyed by this privilege.
However, this decision causes intense jealousy from those around them, as few people are allowed to speak to the Demon Lord Rimuru so casually.
In an extra story in volume 1 of the light novel, Gobta’s adventures before meeting Rimuru are described.
He once traveled alone to the Dwarf Kingdom, demonstrating that even unnamed he was talented, ridiculously lucky, and endearingly foolish.
During that trip he meets a female hobgoblin and proposes to her, but is rejected on the spot.
On his way back, she almost accepts his proposal after recognizing his ability, but Gobta fails to notice and leaves, missing his chance entirely.
While many monsters in the series keep evolving into higher races, Gobta stops at hobgoblin and does not undergo further race evolution (according to Shion’s ultimate analytical skill, his race cannot evolve any further).
Even so, he improves massively through training, learning combat technique from Hakurou and forming a combat duo with Ranga that allows them to perform fusion transformations.
As a result, without anyone noticing exactly when it happened, Gobta ends up as one of the strongest combatants among the former goblins of Tempest.
In battles, enemies sometimes underestimate him until he displays his skill, then assume he “cannot possibly be just a goblin.”
Gobta usually corrects them, clarifying that he is not a goblin but a hobgoblin.
Even then, his personality ensures that whenever he gets too full of himself, something goes wrong and he winds up paying the price.
Gobta is fundamentally cheerful, carefree, and thoughtless.
He loves jokes, light banter, and stepping into the spotlight, and he inflates instantly when praised.
He often speaks without thinking, misreads situations, and leaves details sloppy.
Because of that, he frequently fails at critical moments, gets into trouble, or suffers painful consequences—physically, socially, or both.
Despite these flaws, his very stupidity has a positive side: he has almost no fear, so he takes on dangerous tasks without overthinking them.
Combined with his natural talent and sturdy body, this leads to sudden leaps in growth whenever he is pushed to the limit.
Gobta is also surprisingly hardworking when guided by someone he respects.
He hangs on through Hakurou’s merciless training and even accepts “training” that involves eating Shion’s lethal cooking, turning each near-death experience into an opportunity to get stronger.
His relationship with Rimuru is closer and more casual than that of most subordinates.
He treats Rimuru as both a revered boss and a buddy he can joke with, which makes him uniquely important to Rimuru’s mental comfort.
Because of his comedic timing and “idiot who somehow pulls through” energy, Gobta often steals scenes as comic relief while still being genuinely useful.
He is the kind of character who stumbles, falls face-first, and then wins anyway—and that contradiction is central to his charm.
Gobta starts as a lowly goblin living in a small, threatened village in the Jura Forest.
Rimuru Tempest saves the village, names the goblins, and transforms the village into the foundation of what becomes the Jura Tempest Federation.
After being named, Gobta evolves into a hobgoblin and joins Tempest as one of Rimuru’s earliest followers.
Over time, he becomes a core member of the city’s defensive and mobile combat forces.
He later teams up with Ranga and is placed in command of the Wolf Ogre Corps, often referred to as the Goblin Riders.
As captain, he leads mounted units that combine hobgoblins and Tempest Star Wolves, forming a highly mobile strike force.
Gobta participates in the martial arts tournament that Rimuru organizes.
Through both his unexpected combat skill and outrageous luck, he achieves performances impressive enough that he is eventually counted among Rimuru’s Four Heavenly Kings.
However, both Gobta and everyone else frankly acknowledge that he is “the weakest of the Four Heavenly Kings.”
Rimuru finds this oddly appropriate, thinking that in a sense Gobta perfectly embodies what a Four Heavenly Kings member in a fantasy story is “supposed” to be.
General Traits
Gobta is described as a “genius type” in battle—versatile, quick-witted, and able to improvise on the fly.
He may lack polish, but his instincts are sharp and his adaptability is exceptional.
He quickly learns and applies new abilities just from observing or experiencing them once.
This includes advanced movement skills normally restricted to other races.
He has mastered Shadow Movement, an Extra Skill originally belonging to Ranga and the Tempest Star Wolves.
The fact that a former goblin can independently use it, with no direct training, marks him as an anomaly among monsters.
Gobta’s energy level is just under 20,000 EP, a respectable figure for a non-evolved hobgoblin.
Combined with his skills, this makes him quite formidable despite his goofy exterior.
Training Under Hakurou
Hakurou, the veteran sword master, sees Gobta’s hidden potential early on.
He takes Gobta as a disciple and subjects him to harsh, disciplined training.
Through this training, Gobta learns proper swordsmanship, footwork, timing, and control.
He refines his previously wild, instinct-driven fighting style into something much more efficient and dangerous.
Even though he complains and goofs off, Gobta never truly gives up on the training.
This persistence, plus his talent, allows him to climb from “joke character” to top-tier among goblins.
Later, Gobta and Ranga both receive special training from the Demon Lord Milim Nava.
Milim focuses on sharpening their combat sense, reflexes, and practical fighting skills rather than just raw power.
Through this brutal “coaching,” Gobta improves dramatically at handling high-speed movement, heavy power output, and complex coordination with Ranga.
By the end, he can manage far greater physical and magical output than before without instantly losing control.
As a result, among all the former goblins of Tempest, Gobta becomes one of the strongest.
Enemies who initially dismiss him as “just a goblin” often end up shocked once he cuts loose.
Gobta possesses the Unique Skill Demonic Wolf Summon (Give Me Your Power).
This ability allows him to summon wolf-type monsters and then unify himself with the summoned wolf.
He acquires this skill during the martial arts tournament.
When he tries to summon a Star Wolf, Ranga forcibly interrupts and hijacks the summoning route, resulting in Gobta awakening this unique summoning-and-fusion ability.
Within this Unique Skill is an included authority:
Included Authority: Demonic Wolf Fusion (Transformation)
Demonic Wolf Fusion (Transformation) lets Gobta fully merge his body with that of a summoned wolf-type monster.
In practice, he mainly uses this to fuse with Ranga.
When Gobta fuses with Ranga, the resulting form is essentially a bipedal, humanoid werewolf version of Ranga.
Gobta’s own goblin traits disappear; what remains is a powerful, wolf-like warrior with Ranga’s appearance and presence.
In this fused state, Gobta can utilize Ranga’s superior physical capabilities, vast magicules, and numerous abilities, all in a humanoid form.
The combined strength is extremely high, allowing for overwhelming offense and mobility.
However, fusion comes with a serious drawback:
Gobta controls the body’s movement and actions, while Ranga manages the power output and ability control behind the scenes.
If the two fail to synchronize their intentions and control levels, the fused body’s immense power becomes unstable.
This can result in them failing to draw out their full power—or worse, losing control and self-destructing mid-battle.
When Gobta first gains this ability at the tournament, his immaturity and lack of control become painfully obvious.
He cannot properly manage the enhanced power and speed, leading to accidents and self-inflicted damage.
Milim’s later training is partly aimed at helping Gobta and Ranga handle this dangerous fusion more safely and effectively.
As they synchronize, the Demonic Wolf Fusion form goes from “self-destructive powerhouse” to a truly terrifying battle asset.
Gobta has several notable Extra Skills and resistances that support his fighting style.
Shadow Movement
This allows him to move through shadows for swift repositioning or surprise attacks.
It is a signature ability of the Tempest Star Wolves, but Gobta uses it as if it were natural to him.
Unification
This skill supports synchronized operation with allies or combined forms.
It likely enhances his compatibility with abilities like Demonic Wolf Fusion and coordinated attacks with Ranga.
Sage
This is a downgraded or lesser variation of Rimuru’s Great Sage (later evolved into a higher intellect-type skill).
Sage gives Gobta improved perception, tactical insight, and analysis during battle, even if he sometimes ignores its advice due to his personality.
Poison Resistance
Gobta possesses resistance to poison, allowing him to survive toxins that might incapacitate or kill weaker creatures.
This resilience also helps him endure Shion’s “cooking,” which is often treated as a lethal hazard.
Gobta becomes one of Rimuru’s so-called Four Heavenly Kings after the martial arts tournament.
This status is partly a reward for his performance and partly a product of his absurd good fortune.
Within the Four Heavenly Kings, Gobta is openly recognized as “the weakest.”
He himself agrees with this label, and Rimuru humorously accepts it as fitting.
Rimuru finds that having someone like Gobta among the Four Heavenly Kings matches the classic fantasy trope—where one of the Four Heavenly Kings is more comedic or deceptively weak.
In that sense, Gobta is “perfectly suited” to the title, just not in the usual overwhelmingly powerful way.
Despite being the weakest among the four, he is by no means weak overall.
Compared to ordinary monsters, Gobta is terrifyingly strong; it is only in the rarefied air of Demon Lords and ultimate beings that he seems underwhelming.
Gobta is one of Rimuru’s earliest named subordinates and has been with him from near the beginning of Tempest’s history.
Because of this long history, Gobta feels comfortable speaking casually to Rimuru instead of using stiffly respectful wording.
While most subordinates treat Rimuru with extreme formality and reverence, Gobta talks to him like a buddy.
He jokes, complains, and reacts honestly even when it might be seen as disrespectful from others.
Far from being annoyed, Rimuru values this.
As Rimuru’s position rises—from village leader to nation ruler to Demon Lord—most relationships become more distant and formal, so Gobta’s casual attitude becomes emotionally important.
When the Twelve Guardian Lords are established, Rimuru formally grants Gobta the privilege of “continuing to speak casually, as always.”
Rimuru justifies this as both a kindness (Gobta struggles with polite speech) and a recognition that Gobta will not undergo further race evolution.
For Gobta, this is an enormous honor and relief, and he celebrates enthusiastically.
It also triggers jealousy among other subordinates, who would love to speak to Rimuru that freely but cannot.
In a larger sense, Gobta embodies Rimuru’s connection to his humble beginnings.
No matter how grand Tempest becomes, Gobta is a reminder of the original goblin village days and the simple, chaotic camaraderie that started it all.
Magic Steel Short Sword
Gobta’s primary melee weapon is a short sword similar to a wakizashi, forged from magic steel.
It has excellent sharpness and durability, fitting his agile, close-combat style.
Later, the short sword is further upgraded and integrated with elemental magic.
Its blade can be wrapped in the elemental spell Great Water-Ice Spear (Icicle Lance) and then release that power on command.
In this enhanced form, Gobta can swing the blade to create spear-like projectiles of water and ice, or launch the Icicle Lance directly.
This dramatically expands his attack range and gives him access to powerful mid-range magic attacks.
Sheath-Type Railgun: Case Cannon
The sheath for Gobta’s short sword is itself a weapon called the Case Cannon.
On the surface it appears to be a normal scabbard, but its interior is a sophisticated magical device.
Inside the sheath is a series of magic steel coils imbued with the Extra Skill Black Lightning.
When Gobta pours magicules into the sheath with the short sword drawn, those coils act as an electromagnetic acceleration mechanism.
At the bottom of the sheath is a small, 2-centimeter-diameter lead bullet.
When activated, the Case Cannon uses electromagnetic acceleration to fire this bullet at supersonic speeds.
Functionally, the Case Cannon is a coilgun or railgun disguised as a sword sheath.
This gives Gobta unexpected ranged firepower capable of piercing heavily armored opponents or delivering devastating surprise attacks.
Combined with his mobility and Shadow Movement, the Case Cannon makes Gobta effective at both close and medium range.
He can dart in with his short sword, then step back into the shadows and fire high-speed projectiles before the enemy can react.
Great Water-Ice Spear (Icicle Lance) is an elemental magic spell Gobta can use in conjunction with his weapon.
The spell envelops his magic steel short sword in water-ice elemental energy.
From there, Gobta can use the blade like a focusing rod, launching spear-like lances of ice toward his enemies.
These attacks combine physical penetration with freezing power, making them dangerous against both heavily armored and agile foes.
The ability to embed this spell into his weapon and fire it at will shows that Gobta is not just a physical fighter.
He has learned to incorporate magic into his combat style, adding versatility and unpredictability to his attacks.
Before ever meeting Rimuru Tempest, Gobta already had a track record of absurd adventures.
A special story in the first light novel volume details how he once traveled alone to the Dwarf Kingdom.
At that time he was still an unnamed goblin with no formal backing.
Even so, he survived the journey, had various encounters, and demonstrated surprising competence and luck.
During that journey he met a female hobgoblin and, in true Gobta fashion, impulsively proposed marriage.
She rejected him initially, unsurprised by his brashness.
However, after witnessing his efforts and ability, she begins to reconsider.
On his way out, she all but gives him her approval—yet Gobta, oblivious as ever, fails to notice and simply leaves.
This story highlights several core aspects of Gobta: he is talented, unbelievably lucky, and also an idiot in a charming way.
It reinforces the idea that his “foolishness plus fortune” formula predates his encounter with Rimuru and continues throughout the series.
