Ritsu enters Sakuragaoka High School already determined to join the Light Music Club.

When she discovers that the club has no members and is on the verge of being abolished, she pulls her childhood friend Mio Akiyama into her plan to revive it.

Because there are no existing members at the time she joins, Ritsu becomes club president from her first year.

She often takes the lead, though her leadership comes with plenty of forgotten paperwork, sudden ideas, and chaotic energy.

Ritsu is called “Ricchan” by Yui Hirasawa, Tsumugi Kotobuki, and Sawako Yamanaka.

Her lively presence makes her the club’s mood-maker, even when she is the reason everyone else is exhausted.

Ritsu has short brown hair in a forward-slanting bob, with noticeable outward flips.

She usually wears a yellow headband that keeps her bangs up and exposes her forehead.

Her eyes are nearly the same brownish shade as her hair.

According to Tsumugi Kotobuki, her hair is so smooth that it makes people want to keep touching it.

She is scolded more than once by Mio Akiyama and Nodoka Manabe for failing to submit necessary paperwork.

She often teases Mio Akiyama, especially about her fearfulness.

However, Ritsu is weak when she becomes the one being teased or pushed around.

Despite her bold attitude, she has a delicate side.

When Mio Akiyama is not around, Ritsu becomes visibly lonely.

In the television anime, she is given more frequent straight-man reactions compared with the original manga.

She is also directionally challenged.

During the Kyoto school trip, she confidently tells everyone to follow her, only to end up back where they started.

Although Ritsu is rough and careless in many situations, the anime shows that she has a surprisingly domestic side.

She is good at sewing buttons by hand, even though she is bad with sewing machines.

She also cooks for the Light Music Club members.

This household skill may be connected to how she looks after her younger brother, Satoshi Tainaka.

Ritsu is the Light Music Club president, but not always the most reliable one.

One major problem occurs because she forgets to submit the club application form.

During preparations for the first-year school festival, Tsumugi Kotobuki goes to the student council room to request use of the stage.

The request is rejected because the Light Music Club has not been formally recognized.

Ritsu had promised to submit the form herself because she was the president.

Unfortunately, she completely forgets until just before the festival.

After the form is finally submitted, the Light Music Club is officially approved.

In the first volume of the manga and the first episode of the anime, Sawako Yamanaka explains that the club needs at least four members by April or it will be abolished.

Since there are zero members at that point, the club effectively disappears once before being revived.

Ritsu plays drums because she dislikes instruments that require small, fussy finger movements.

This practical but very Ritsu-like reason leads her to the most physically energetic role in the band.

In the television series, she names Keith Moon of The Who as a drummer she admires.

When Mio had to present an essay she wrote at a school assembly, Ritsu trained with her to help the shy Mio prepare.

They sometimes conflict because of musical differences.

Even so, the series shows that each of them becomes conscious when the other grows close to someone else.

Ritsu may act like the stronger one, but her bond with Mio reveals just how sentimental she can be.

Ritsu is especially in sync with Yui Hirasawa.

They often joke around together, derail club activities, and cause trouble as a pair.

She treats Sawako Yamanaka more casually than most adults.

Outside of class, Ritsu often speaks to Sawako almost like a friend, though she still respects her as both a teacher and a Light Music Club alumna.

She often gets scolded by Azusa Nakano, especially for not practicing seriously.

She also roughhouses with Azusa, sometimes putting her in wrestling holds.

Ritsu is generally polite to older people.

The main exception is Sawako, whose closeness to the club makes her feel like part teacher, part senior, and part friend.

In the manga’s first volume, when Ritsu recruits Yui, she briefly speaks in a more conventionally feminine way.

After Yui joins, Ritsu quickly returns to her usual rough and lively speech style.

In the original manga, Ritsu is not especially interested in hairstyles.

Because she finds styling troublesome, she simply ties up her bangs.

In the anime, the reason is different.

She keeps her bangs up partly because she lacks confidence in how she looks with them down.
