Ritsu enters Sakuragaoka High School already determined to join the Light Music Club.
When she discovers that the club has no members and is on the verge of being abolished, she pulls her childhood friend Mio Akiyama into her plan to revive it.
Because there are no existing members at the time she joins, Ritsu becomes club president from her first year.
She often takes the lead, though her leadership comes with plenty of forgotten paperwork, sudden ideas, and chaotic energy.
Ritsu is called “Ricchan” by Yui Hirasawa, Tsumugi Kotobuki, and Sawako Yamanaka.
Her lively presence makes her the club’s mood-maker, even when she is the reason everyone else is exhausted.
Ritsu has short brown hair in a forward-slanting bob, with noticeable outward flips.
She usually wears a yellow headband that keeps her bangs up and exposes her forehead.
Her eyes are nearly the same brownish shade as her hair.
According to Tsumugi Kotobuki, her hair is so smooth that it makes people want to keep touching it.
Her hairstyle changes her impression dramatically.
When she lets her bangs down, she looks so different that official materials once warned fans that she could be hard to distinguish from Yui Hirasawa.
Fans often praise “bangs-down Ritsu” as especially cute.
In the anime, Ritsu herself seems to lack confidence in that look, which is one reason she keeps her forehead exposed.
At home and after entering university, she sometimes ties her bangs at the top of her head with a hair tie.
Her winter school uniform is often worn loosely, with the front buttons open and her blouse hem untucked.
In the original manga, this style is generally used outside the winter season.
Ritsu does not appear especially fashion-obsessed.
She once says that T-shirts or polo shirts are enough for summer, though she still shows normal interest in looking nice when she checks her hair in a studio mirror.
Ritsu speaks and acts in a boyish, direct, and rough-edged way.
She is energetic, sociable, and often careless, but she is not thoughtless.
She has a strong ability to brighten the room and keep the club atmosphere moving.
At the same time, she can be surprisingly considerate and shows that she genuinely thinks about the Light Music Club as its president.
Ritsu and Yui Hirasawa get along extremely well.
The two frequently fool around together, go too far, and end up being scolded by Mio Akiyama, Azusa Nakano, or other people around them.
Because of her sloppy side, Ritsu often forgets important club documents.
She is scolded more than once by Mio Akiyama and Nodoka Manabe for failing to submit necessary paperwork.
She often teases Mio Akiyama, especially about her fearfulness.
However, Ritsu is weak when she becomes the one being teased or pushed around.
Despite her bold attitude, she has a delicate side.
When Mio Akiyama is not around, Ritsu becomes visibly lonely.
In the television anime, she is given more frequent straight-man reactions compared with the original manga.
She is also directionally challenged.
During the Kyoto school trip, she confidently tells everyone to follow her, only to end up back where they started.
Although Ritsu is rough and careless in many situations, the anime shows that she has a surprisingly domestic side.
She is good at sewing buttons by hand, even though she is bad with sewing machines.
She also cooks for the Light Music Club members.
This household skill may be connected to how she looks after her younger brother, Satoshi Tainaka.
These details are anime-only additions and are not depicted in the original manga.
Ritsu is the Light Music Club president, but not always the most reliable one.
One major problem occurs because she forgets to submit the club application form.
During preparations for the first-year school festival, Tsumugi Kotobuki goes to the student council room to request use of the stage.
The request is rejected because the Light Music Club has not been formally recognized.
Ritsu had promised to submit the form herself because she was the president.
Unfortunately, she completely forgets until just before the festival.
After the form is finally submitted, the Light Music Club is officially approved.
In the first volume of the manga and the first episode of the anime, Sawako Yamanaka explains that the club needs at least four members by April or it will be abolished.
Since there are zero members at that point, the club effectively disappears once before being revived.
Ritsu plays drums because she dislikes instruments that require small, fussy finger movements.
This practical but very Ritsu-like reason leads her to the most physically energetic role in the band.
Her drum kit is a Yamaha Hipgig.
She uses Zildjian cymbals.
In the television series, she names Keith Moon of The Who as a drummer she admires.
Keith Moon is known for wild, explosive performances, which fits Ritsu’s own powerful style.
Ritsu’s drumming is described as lively and forceful.
However, she is also often said to rush the tempo.
As the bassist in the rhythm section, Mio Akiyama says it can be difficult to keep the rhythm steady with Ritsu.
Like Yui Hirasawa, Ritsu often avoids serious practice during club activities.
Because of that, she is frequently scolded by Azusa Nakano and Mio Akiyama.
Since drums are difficult to carry, Ritsu usually borrows a drum set when performing outside school.
Even so, she carries her drumsticks with her.
Ritsu and Mio Akiyama have known each other since childhood.
They are close enough to be called best friends, even though they often clash.
Ritsu teases Mio constantly, and when she goes too far, Mio often punishes her with a fist to the head.
Their comedy routine becomes one of the most familiar patterns in the series.
Their friendship began seriously in fourth grade.
When Mio had to present an essay she wrote at a school assembly, Ritsu trained with her to help the shy Mio prepare.
They sometimes conflict because of musical differences.
Even so, the series shows that each of them becomes conscious when the other grows close to someone else.
Ritsu may act like the stronger one, but her bond with Mio reveals just how sentimental she can be.
Ritsu is especially in sync with Yui Hirasawa.
They often joke around together, derail club activities, and cause trouble as a pair.
She treats Sawako Yamanaka more casually than most adults.
Outside of class, Ritsu often speaks to Sawako almost like a friend, though she still respects her as both a teacher and a Light Music Club alumna.
She often gets scolded by Azusa Nakano, especially for not practicing seriously.
She also roughhouses with Azusa, sometimes putting her in wrestling holds.
Ritsu is generally polite to older people.
The main exception is Sawako, whose closeness to the club makes her feel like part teacher, part senior, and part friend.
At N Women’s University, Ritsu’s sociability remains strong.
She quickly gets along with Akira Yoshida from the band Onna-gumi, partly because they are both drummers.
She also becomes friendly with upperclassmen, especially Chiyo Hirose.
Ritsu has a younger brother named Satoshi Tainaka.
Her ability to take care of him is suggested as one reason she is surprisingly good at housework in the anime.
Ritsu appears to enjoy pro wrestling.
She is good at the choke sleeper and often uses it on Yui Hirasawa and Azusa Nakano.
In the second episode of the anime’s second season, a shelf in the clubroom appears to contain manga resembling JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.
Because of that, some fans speculate that Ritsu may be a JoJo fan.
Some of Ritsu’s profile information, such as her birthday, height, weight, blood type, and related details, comes from Kyoto Animation’s anime-side settings.
These are not original manga settings.
In the manga’s first volume, when Ritsu recruits Yui, she briefly speaks in a more conventionally feminine way.
After Yui joins, Ritsu quickly returns to her usual rough and lively speech style.
In the original manga, Ritsu is not especially interested in hairstyles.
Because she finds styling troublesome, she simply ties up her bangs.
In the anime, the reason is different.
She keeps her bangs up partly because she lacks confidence in how she looks with them down.
In episode 24 of K-ON!!, Ritsu writes a message for Sawako Yamanaka at graduation.
Her message reads: “Sawako, thank you for everything. Ritsu Tainaka, President.”
Kirara Fantasia
Ritsu was added to Kirara Fantasia during the 2018 K-ON! crossover event, “K-ON! Etoile Live!!”
Her main version is a 4-star Earth-element Knight.
A 3-star Sun-element Mage version based on the cover illustration of the third manga volume was also implemented.
Her 4-star Knight form specializes in durability.
She can raise her own chance of being targeted and use her special attack to grant herself a one-time attack-nullifying barrier.
A Valentine event in 2019, “Chocolate Panic,” added Ritsu as a distributed character.
This version is a 4-star Sun-element Priest.
Her class skill heals one ally slightly and removes sleep, making it a rare and useful support option.
She works well with characters who inflict sleep on themselves after using their special attacks.
Monster Strike
Ritsu appeared in Monster Strike in April 2026 through a collaboration connected to the Super Beast God Festival.
She was implemented as a Light-element premium gacha character.
Her evolved form is titled Drummer Ritsu Tainaka.
Her race is Demi-Human, her battle type is Balance, and her hit type is Reflect with Gauge.
Her abilities include Super Anti-Warp, Super Mine Sweeper M, Anti-Magic Circle, and Friendship Boost.
Her gauge abilities are Anti-Block and Soul Steal L.
Her strike shot, “This Place Is Already a Battlefield,” raises her critical activation rate and launches allies at enemies.
Her friendship combos are Copy and Attack-Speed Up.
Her luck skill is Critical.
She is especially suited for the high-difficulty quest Carone.
Her Attack-Speed Up pairs extremely well with characters such as Kisukil-Lila and Jugem, while her critical-rate-boosting grand command strike shot greatly eases the quest’s difficulty.
