Azusa is small in stature and has long black twin-tails with a faint bluish tint.
Her compact build is one reason she chose a Mustang guitar, since its narrow neck suits her small hands.
She tans extremely easily, even when she uses sunscreen.
Whenever she becomes visibly darker in summer, people jokingly react as if they do not recognize her.
When she lets her hair down, she looks very similar to Mio Akiyama.
Azusa appears from volume 2 of the original manga and from episode 8 of the first anime season.
She is one year younger than Yui Hirasawa, Ritsu Tainaka, Mio Akiyama, and Tsumugi Kotobuki.
She is also in the same school year as Ui Hirasawa and Jun Suzuki.
During the original club era, she is the only junior member of the Light Music Club.
After the older members graduate, she succeeds Ritsu as club president.
In K-ON! highschool, Azusa becomes the main character.
Azusa is serious, sensible, and often acts as one of the club’s main voices of reason alongside Mio.
She frequently tries to tighten up the relaxed mood of the Light Music Club, only to get swept up in that same atmosphere herself.
At first, she worries whether such a laid-back club can really be acceptable.
Over time, she becomes deeply attached to the club’s warm and easygoing rhythm.
She can be slightly cynical and sharp-tongued.
One time, Ritsu overhears Azusa speaking badly about her behind her back, and Azusa ends up being punished for it.
She is also easy to tease.
When people mess with her too much, she can suddenly lose her temper, which only makes Yui enjoy teasing her even more.
Despite her prickly reactions, Azusa is kind, thoughtful, and devoted to her seniors.
She worries sincerely when Yui becomes ill, and she even uses a thousand-yen bill as an offering while praying with all her heart for the seniors to pass their university entrance exams.
Yui adores Azusa and gives her the nickname Azunyan after seeing her wear cat ears.
Azusa claims she does not really like the strange nickname, but it becomes widely used by Yui, fans, and even the voice cast.
Mio and Jun usually call her Azusa.
Tsumugi and Ui call her Azusa-chan.
Azusa is close friends with Ui Hirasawa and Jun Suzuki.
The three often talk during breaks and go out together on holidays.
Because Ui is Yui’s younger sister, Azusa sometimes vents to her about Yui’s behavior in the Light Music Club and asks for advice.
When Azusa joins the seniors on their graduation trip, Ui asks her to take care of Yui.
Azusa admires Mio more and more because Mio also tries to keep the club organized.
She respects Mio’s musicianship and shares her concern for keeping practice meaningful.
Azusa’s parents played in a jazz band, and she began learning guitar in fourth grade.
Because of this, she already has solid technique and musical knowledge when she joins the Light Music Club.
Jun Suzuki, who belongs to the Jazz Research Club, also rates Azusa’s ability highly.
Azusa joins after being moved by the new-student welcome concert and inspired by Yui’s performance.
However, Yui’s actual technical foundation is weak, so Azusa often ends up teaching her instead.
She is highly earnest about music, to the point that her seniors are sometimes dazzled by her dedication.
Her grades and athletic ability are also fairly good.
Azusa uses a Fender Japan Mustang, a guitar famous for its short scale.
She says she chose it because her hands are small and the neck is easy for her to play.
After Yui names Mio’s bass Elizabeth, Azusa names her own Mustang Muttan.
In the Light Music Club, Azusa mainly plays rhythm guitar and backing vocals.
She also takes lead guitar parts in some songs.
When Azusa first joins, she is shocked by the club’s relaxed atmosphere.
She wants serious practice and once bursts out with frustration, insisting that things cannot continue that way.
Even after she settles in, her wish to practice properly does not disappear.
Still, she gradually opens up to Yui and the others and learns to enjoy making music with them.
By the time the older members are near graduation, Azusa has become so attached that she can say the club is fine with just the five of them, even without new members.
At the same time, she often feels lonely and anxious because she will be the only member left after the four seniors graduate.
At one point, she even wishes they would not graduate, even if that meant they never practiced again.
In the film, Azusa joins Yui and the others on their graduation trip during a five-day break after the third-term final exams.
She also organizes the travel schedule, showing her practical and responsible side.
After Yui and the others graduate, Azusa becomes the new president of the Light Music Club.
Ui Hirasawa and Jun Suzuki join the club, but Sawako Yamanaka reveals that the club needs four members to avoid disbandment.
Azusa tries to recruit new students by performing a solo guitar-and-vocal piece at the welcome event.
The result is disastrous, and she becomes depressed over her own lack of skill.
She realizes that she cannot speak so arrogantly about Yui’s weaknesses when her own singing is so poor.
Later, Sumire Saito and Nao Okuda join, allowing the club to survive.
Together with Ui and Jun, they form the new band Wakaba Girls.
At a training camp, Sawako gives Azusa vocal training.
Azusa improves enough to become the vocalist of Wakaba Girls.
At first, she is determined to create a club that will surprise Yui and the others.
She even imitates Mio’s hairstyle as part of this serious new attitude.
However, her enthusiasm makes her lose sight of properly facing her juniors.
Compared with her time under Yui’s seniors, Azusa becomes a little more comedic and often spins her wheels.
When she is troubled about club activities, she frequently consults Yui.
After seeing Sumire and Nao react to a live DVD from the previous year, Azusa realizes she has been chasing the wrong goal.
Instead of trying to make a band better than Ho-kago Tea Time, she decides to act as the proper president of Wakaba Girls.
Azusa does not directly appear in K-ON! college.
However, it is clear that she often keeps in touch with Yui through phone calls and messages.
Azusa appears in an episode published in the February 2021 issue, later collected in volume 2.
This marks her first appearance as a middle school student.
Because of her small size, Yukari mistakes her for an elementary school student.
Azusa appears in Kirara Fantasia from the 2018 K-ON! collaboration event, K-ON! Etowaria Live!!
Her initial version is a four-star Moon-element mage.
She later receives a five-star Wind-element mage version in the event Miyako and the Cat Song.
In that event’s commercial, she has a fully voiced exchange with Miyako from Hidamari Sketch.
Azusa continues to appear fairly often in later events.
In the 2020 Acchi Kocchi collaboration event, Love-Love Travel Operation, she encounters the cast while scouting a live venue in a town visited by Tsumiki and the others.
In the 2021 New Year event Today’s Star Is You! New Year Party for Everyone, she talks with Miki Naoki, Aoba Suzukaze, and Tooru.
They bond over the shared theme of being juniors, even though each has a different relationship with her seniors.
Azusa is implemented in Monster Strike in April 2026 through a collaboration with the Super Beast God Festival.
She appears as a starter-pack monster under the name Rhythm Guitar Azusa Nakano.

Her main suitable stage is Sky Garden’s Sixth Garden.
As a playful detail, searching for Azunyan in the in-game monster encyclopedia also brings up Azusa.
Azusa’s official profile information comes from Kyoto Animation settings and is not part of the original manga canon.
The birth years of the K-ON! characters became clear because Azusa’s resident record appears in the bonus anime episode Plan!
The document, needed for her passport application, lists her birth date as November 11, 1992.
Since Yui and the others are one school year above her, they are generally implied to have been born in 1991, or in early 1992 for early-year birthdays.
Azusa’s easy tanning leads to a fan nickname based on the idea of a darker or “toasted” Azunyan.
