Tappei Nagatsuki

Debut and Breakthrough

Nagatsuki began his storytelling journey on the user-generated novel publishing website "Shōsetsuka ni Narō," where he uploaded under the name Nezumi-iro Neko.

When his web novel *Re:Zero* was picked up by MF Bunko J for physical publication in 2014, he adopted the professional pen name Tappei Nagatsuki.

On "Shōsetsuka ni Narō," his combined author name now reads "Nezumi-iro Neko / Tappei Nagatsuki."

His debut series has since expanded into a media franchise encompassing manga adaptations, an anime series, and video games.

Major Works and Achievements

*Re:Zero* earned the top spot in both the light novel and anime categories at the SUGOI JAPAN Award 2017.

His creative contributions extend well beyond his main franchise.

Nagatsuki served as the original creator and scenario supervisor for the anime adaptation of *Re:Zero*, ensuring his vision translated accurately to the screen.

He has also branched out into original anime creation, providing the original concept, series composition, and scripts for both *Warlords of Sigrdrifa* and the critically acclaimed *Vivy -Fluorite Eye's Song-*.

In 2024, he handled series composition and scripts for the DC Comics-inspired anime *Suicide Squad Isekai*.

A new original anime project titled *Jack the Reaper* is on the horizon, with Nagatsuki as the original creator.

His writing talent extends to video games.

He has penned collaboration event scenarios, notably for the popular mobile game *Princess Connect! Re:Dive* featuring characters from *Re:Zero*.

He is also slated to write the scenario for the upcoming visual novel *MONOCHROME SERENADE*.

Balancing Two Professions

Nagatsuki's identity as a retail butcher is a well-known and beloved piece of trivia among his fans.

He has confirmed that he genuinely works at a supermarket, choosing to continue his trade alongside his prolific writing schedule.

The "Isekai Quartet" Circle

He shares a close bond with several fellow authors who also debuted from online writing platforms around the same time.

This group includes Natsume Akatsuki (author of *KonoSuba*), Kugane Maruyama (author of *Overlord*), Carlo Zen (author of *The Saga of Tanya the Evil*), and Rifujin na Magonote (author of *Mushoku Tensei*).

This friendship famously led to the crossover anime series *ISEKAI QUARTET*, which features the lead characters of their first four respective works.

The group has also held joint exhibitions showcasing their collaborative spirit.

Friendship with Natsume Akatsuki

His camaraderie with Natsume Akatsuki runs particularly deep, marked by numerous playful collaborations.

Akatsuki once wrote a parody script for a *Re:Zero* anime next-episode preview, and characters from *KonoSuba* made a cameo appearance in the *Re:ZERO* OVA *Memory Snow*.

Nagatsuki was also instrumental in convincing Akatsuki to publish his previously unannounced series *Combatants Will Be Dispatched!*, directly contributing to its journey to publication.

Dedication to Oversight

Nagatsuki is exceptionally hands-on, insisting on personally supervising every adaptation and spin-off of his work.

His motivation is a deep respect for his fanbase.

Driven by a desire to prevent fans from being disappointed by subpar adaptations, he personally checks and approves everything from anime scripts to social game storylines and limited-time collaboration events, ensuring quality and consistency.

Favorite Character

When asked about his personal favorite character in the sprawling cast of *Re:Zero*, Nagatsuki answers without hesitation: Emilia.

He has stated that his entire reason for starting the series was "because I wanted to write Emilia."

Inspirations

As a reader, he enjoys a wide range of works.

He has cited *Ikai no Majutsushi* by Herow Tenki as a favorite novel and considers *Knight's & Magic* an especially enjoyable manga adaptation.
