Gintama (銀魂) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi. It was serialized in Shueisha's *Weekly Shōnen Jump* magazine from 2004 to 2018, later concluding in *Jump GIGA* and the official Gintama app.

The series is a genre-bending mix Sorachi describes as a "sci-fi period-drama comedy".

It is set in an alternate late-Edo period where Earth has been conquered by aliens known as Amanto.

The story primarily follows the odd-jobs freelance business Yorozuya Gin-chan, run by the laid-back but skilled samurai Gintoki Sakata.

He is joined by Shinpachi Shimura, a straight-man with glasses, and Kagura, a super-strong alien girl from the Yato Tribe.

The series balances episodic slapstick comedy and parodies with progressively serious, action-driven story arcs.

These arcs explore Gintoki's tragic past as a legendary anti-Amanto warrior known as the "White Demon" (Shiroyasha) and his connections to various factions.

After a 15-year serialization, the series became famous for multiple false endings before its true conclusion in 2019.

As of November 2024, the manga had a worldwide cumulative circulation of over 73 million copies, including digital versions.

In the late Edo period, Earth is opened by force to alien "Amanto" leading to a lost war for the samurai loyalists.

Now a puppet government, the Bakufu outlaws swords, but Gintoki Sakata continues to live by a self-made code of honor in the heart of Edo, Kabukicho District.

Everyday Life and Odd Jobs

Early storylines focus on Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura taking on bizarre odd jobs.

They constantly clash with the Shinsengumi police force, led by the stalker-like Isao Kondō and the mayonnaise-obsessed vice-chief Toushirō Hijikata.

Gintoki's old war comrade, the hilariously serious anti-government terrorist Kotarou Katsura, often drags them into trouble.

He is accompanied by his enigmatic pet, Elizabeth.

Major Story Arcs

The comedic episodes gradually give way to sweeping, multi-chapter sagas that overhaul the status quo.

Benizakura Arc

The group investigates a string of murders linked to a sentient, parasitic sword called Benizakura.

It brings them into conflict with Shinsuke Takasugi, the radical extremist wing of Gintoki's former allies, who seeks to destroy the world that took their teacher.

Courtesan of a Nation Arc

The Yorozuya attempt to reunite a legendary dying courtesan with her lost lover.

This leads them into a direct confrontation with the former shogun and the revelation of an immortal, shadowy assassination group called the Naraku.

Shogun Assassination and Farewell, Shinsengumi Arcs

The kindly Shogun Shigeshige Tokugawa is targeted for assassination in a vicious power play.

His death forces the Shinsengumi to become fugitives, teaming up with their former enemies to survive and spark a revolution against a corrupt new regime.

The Silver Soul Arc

The final battle plays out on Earth as the planet is invaded by a coalition of Amanto seeking to harness its life energy, the "Altana".

Gintoki and his allies face the immortal Utsuro, the final antagonist whose face is identical to their beloved late teacher, Shouyou Yoshida.

Two years after the final battle, life returns to a new normal in a slowly rebuilding Edo.

The setting is an anachronistic version of Edo (now Tokyo), where historical Japanese aesthetics merge with advanced sci-fi technology.

Wooden nagaya houses sit beside skyscrapers, and people wear kimono while using cell phones and spaceships.

The Tokugawa shogunate persists as a puppet regime under the real power of the "Heavenly Rulers" (Tendoshu).

A sect of these rulers manages the "Altana"—a volatile planetary life energy that emerges from "Dragon Holes" found on various worlds.

Alien races are diverse, ranging from human-like to clear non-humanoids.

The powerful mercenary races called the Three Great Tribes are the Yato, the Shinra, and the Dakini.

Yorozuya Gin-chan

Gintoki Sakata: The protagonist and president of the odd jobs business. He is a silver-haired, 20-something samurai who carries a wooden sword and has a bottomless sweet tooth. Once a feared anti-Amanto warrior known as the "White Demon", he now lives a lazy but principled life.

Shinpachi Shimura: The responsible straight-man of the group who wears his iconic glasses. He idolizes the pop singer Tsu Terakado and runs her fan club.

Kagura: The alien heroine who speaks in a rudely blunt manner. She is a member of the battle-crazed Yato Tribe with immense physical strength, and always carries a bulletproof parasol to block sunlight.

Sadaharu: The group's giant pet dog, who was abandoned before Kagura adopted him.

Key Factions and Individuals

Kotarou Katsura: A longhaired, dim-witted yet brilliant extremist whose catchphrase is "Zura janai, Katsura da!" He leads a faction of anti-government rebels with his pet, Elizabeth.

Shinsuke Takasugi: The charismatic, vengeful leader of the radical Kiheitai faction. An old comrade of Gintoki, he became a major antagonist driven by a desire to destroy a world that failed their master.

Isao Kondō: The stalkerish but big-hearted chief of the Shinsengumi.

Toushirou Hijikata: The stoic, chain-smoking "Demon Vice-Chief" who is addicted to dumping mayonnaise on all his food.

Sougo Okita: The sadistic, baby-faced first division captain who constantly attempts to assassinate Hijikata to take his job.

Novels

3-Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-sensei: A popular spin-off novel series by Tomohito Ōsaki. It places the characters in a high school setting, with Ginpachi as their unmotivated but insightful homeroom teacher.

Anime

A long-running television anime adaptation aired from 2006 to 2010, followed by several sequel seasons.

Three main anime films have been released:

*Gintama: The Movie: A New Retelling of the Benizakura Arc* (2010)

*Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya* (2013)

*Gintama: The Final* (2021)

Live-Action Films

A live-action film adaptation directed by Yuichi Fukuda, starring Shun Oguri as Gintoki, was released in 2017.

A sequel, *Gintama 2: Rules Are Made to Be Broken*, followed in 2018.
