ALDNOAH.ZERO is an original anime series produced by A-1 Pictures and TROYCA, first airing in 2014 - 2015. It vividly depicts a war between Earth and the Martian Vers Empire, driven by advanced Aldnoah technology and political intrigue. With its intertwining character dramas, real robot and super robot confrontations, and unique worldbuilding, the series stands out as one of the most gripping mecha and science fiction anime of its era.
ALDNOAH.ZERO was developed by A-1 Pictures and TROYCA, with director Ei Aoki (also an executive at TROYCA) at the helm.
The original story concept is credited to Gen Urobuchi, a director and executive at Nitroplus, known for dark and complex narratives.
The project aimed for a classic, "orthodox" approach to mecha anime, yet it was constructed as an ensemble drama rather than a single-protagonist tale.
The main characters were designed by mangaka Takako Shimura and finalized for animation by Masako Matsumoto.
Conceptually, the anime explores what would happen if real robot (Earth) and super robot (Mars) design philosophies clashed head-on, creating a central dramatic conflict.
Historical Setting
The world of ALDNOAH.ZERO diverges from ours in 1972 when humanity discovers the Hypergate, a piece of ancient Martian technology, on the Moon.
This leads to the establishment of the Vers Empire on Mars, whose society becomes aristocratic and technologically advanced thanks to the Aldnoah system, an ancient Martian power source.
Tensions between Earth and Mars mount over the control of Aldnoah technology, ultimately sparking the devastating "Heaven's Fall" disaster, where the Hypergate overload destroys the Moon and cripples both societies.
The Vers Empire splinters into various noble houses, each commanding their own knightly forces and mighty war machines (Kataphrakts), setting the stage for Earth’s defensive struggle.
Societies and Factions
Earth is unified as the United Forces of Earth, aiming to resist Martian aggression, while Mars is rigidly hierarchical, with a deeply entrenched aristocracy controlling both politics and military.
The Martian side, while technologically superior due to Aldnoah, suffers from harsh living conditions and social strife, fueling their expansionist ambitions and disdain toward Earthlings.
Technology
Aldnoah is a mysterious ancient technology powering Martian weaponry.
Only royal bloodlines can activate Aldnoah drives, but the series explores how this power can sometimes be shared under special circumstances—usually at great personal cost.
Kataphrakts, the main combat mechs, reflect the different worlds: Earth's are practical and mass-produced; Mars's are singular, ostentatious, and boast extraordinary abilities.
First Cour
The story begins more than a decade after "Heaven’s Fall," in a world where Earth and Mars maintain an uneasy peace.
Princess Asseylum Vers Allusia, seeking reconciliation, visits Earth but is nearly assassinated in a plot orchestrated by Martian nobles. This triggers the Vers Empire’s full-scale invasion of Earth.
On Earth, high school student Inaho Kaizuka is swept up in the conflict, determinedly protecting Asseylum when he discovers her survival.
Resourceful, stoic, and shockingly calm, Inaho crafts daring stratagems to defeat seemingly invincible Martian Knights.
Meanwhile, on Mars, Slaine Troyard, a human who owes his life to Asseylum, becomes entangled in political intrigue, navigating prejudice and betrayal to stay true to his ideals.
As battles escalate, all paths converge in a tragic climax where loyalty, identity, and fate collide—leaving the fates of Inaho, Slaine, and Asseylum perilously uncertain.
Second Cour
Months after the bloody battle at Earth's command center, the war continues.
Slaine rises through the Martian ranks, aided by Count Saazbaum's patronage and his own cunning.
He becomes a knight and later a count, maneuvering skillfully within the treacherous Martian hierarchy.
Meanwhile, Inaho survives his near-fatal wounds with a cybernetic eye implant, enhancing his tactical prowess but putting his body and mind under increasing strain.
Asseylum, badly wounded, lies in a coma, while her half-sister Lemrina impersonates her to keep Martian morale high and the war going.
Newly emboldened, Earth launches a desperate assault on the Martian Moon Base, hoping to end the conflict.
Both Inaho and Slaine, changed irrevocably by loss and ambition, face off in an epic final duel beneath the shadow of the shattered Moon.
The war ends when Asseylum awakens, claiming her birthright and offering peace, while Slaine, now branded a war criminal, is spared execution at her request.
"The Penultimate Truth" (OVA)
Set nine months after the series’ end, Inaho visits the facility where Slaine is imprisoned.
The rain-soaked atmosphere creates a poignant, introspective mood as both characters reflect on the cost of war, their choices, and what it means to move forward.
- Aldnoah: Ancient Martian technology required to power most Martian machines. Only royals and those who receive the "activator" from them can use it.
- Aldnoah Drive: The actual engine or reactor powered by Aldnoah energy, used in Martian war machines.
- Kataphrakt: The generic term for humanoid mecha in the series. Earth's are based on practical engineering, while Martian ones possess spectacular, often physics-defying abilities.
- Hypergate: Teleportation device on the Moon enabling instantaneous travel between Earth and Mars, later destroyed, triggering Heaven's Fall.
- Vers Empire: Martian aristocratic state founded on the control of Aldnoah and ancient Martian cultural nostalgia, deeply hierarchical and territorial.
- United Forces of Earth (UFE): Earth’s united military, forced to standardize mecha operation and create mass-produced units in anticipation of Martian aggression.
The series spans 24 TV episodes split across two seasons, with an OVA titled "The Penultimate Truth" in 2025.
