Laplace is introduced as a mysterious jester-like demon and a member of the secretive Moderate Harlequin Alliance.

He wears an asymmetrical, mocking mask and speaks in a Kansai-style dialect in the original version, which gives him a slippery, unserious vibe.

Despite his clownish and shady behavior, he is one of the most competent and dangerous members of the Alliance.

He often appears behind the scenes as a schemer, moving across nations and factions and acting as a recurring “shadow player” in the story.

Laplace acts as a subordinate and right-hand man to Kagali, the chairwoman of the Moderate Harlequin Alliance, and is the second strongest member after her.

He has a strong sense of camaraderie toward his fellow Deathmen and genuine loyalty to Kagali, even though he constantly jokes and acts suspicious.

He first appears early in the story during the Orc Lord crisis in the Great Jura Forest, operating as one of Clayman’s agents.

From there onward, he repeatedly pops up across different arcs, making him the most frequently appearing member of the Moderate Harlequin Alliance.

Laplace is easy-going, sly, and always puts on the air of a clown who never takes anything seriously.

He constantly jokes, lies, and toys with people, which makes others naturally distrustful of him—even when he is being sincere.

Underneath that frivolous surface, he is cautious, calculating, and highly perceptive.

He prefers “strategic retreats” to needless risk, happily running away even from fights he could probably win if he thinks the situation is unfavorable.

He is deeply attached to his fellow Deathmen and takes their well-being seriously.

While he may mock and tease his comrades, he will risk his life to protect them when it truly matters.

Even after Clayman’s death, Laplace handles his grief in his own twisted way, deliberately making himself the target of others’ anger so they will not be consumed by sorrow.

He shows a surprisingly self-sacrificing side, hidden beneath his con-man façade.

Laplace is the most powerful combatant in the Moderate Harlequin Alliance, surpassed only by Kagali herself.

Although his total energy output is technically the lowest among the Alliance members (while still being on par with an Awakened Demon Lord), his combat skill is extraordinarily high.

He combines elite physical abilities, refined technique, and tactical cunning.

Unlike combat-specialized Deathmen such as Footman and Tear, whose childish minds limit their technical skill, Laplace’s experience and cool-headed judgment give him a massive edge.

His fighting style emphasizes speed, precision, and opportunism rather than brute force.

He is adept at reading the flow of battle, avoiding unnecessary risks, and exploiting openings mercilessly.

Laplace is also a capable mental mage, specializing in spiritual and mental-type magic.

This complements his trickster persona, letting him deceive, mislead, and control the battlefield psychologically as well as physically.

He is a “special model” Deathman created by Kagali and cannot be mass-produced.

According to his own words, his special construction allows him to ignore Kagali’s direct orders if he wishes, giving him more autonomy than typical Deathmen.

Despite frequently fleeing from battle, these retreats only highlight his toughness and regenerative abilities.

He has returned seemingly unfazed even after losing his left arm in a fight with Treyni or being torn apart by Roy Valentin, proving his durability and tenacity.

Within the world’s power scale, Laplace can be considered an “uncrowned Demon Lord,” possessing strength comparable to formal Demon Lords without bearing the title.

Trickster (Azamukumono)

This Unique Skill fits Laplace’s identity as a con artist and deceiver.

It enhances his ability to mislead opponents, manipulate situations, and set up feints and traps in both battle and negotiations.

Future Sight (Mierumono)

This Unique Skill allows Laplace to foresee future possibilities.

It gives him a significant advantage in anticipating enemy actions and avoiding lethal outcomes, supporting his survival-first combat style.

Early Activities in the Great Jura Forest

At the beginning of the series, Laplace operates under Clayman during the Orc Lord turmoil in the Great Jura Forest.

He takes part in the behind-the-scenes operations designed to help awaken Clayman into a true Demon Lord.

While Clayman plays the role of a visible villain, Laplace acts more from the shadows, quietly maneuvering events without drawing direct attention.

His early appearances establish him as a lurking mastermind type, always several steps removed from the frontline chaos.

Involvement with Clayman and the Walpurgis Banquet

Before Clayman’s downfall, Laplace notices that Clayman is acting strangely and not like his usual self.

He warns Clayman in advance, sensing that something is wrong with his friend’s behavior and plans.

When the Demon Lords’ Walpurgis Banquet takes place and Clayman is ultimately defeated and killed by Rimuru Tempest, Laplace is away on a mission.

He has infiltrated the Holy Empire of Lubelius at that same time on Clayman’s behalf.

In Lubelius, Laplace learns of Clayman’s death.

There, he encounters Roy Valentin and, enraged by Roy’s disrespectful insult toward his deceased friend, kills Roy on the spot.

Even though he had doubts about Clayman’s recent actions, Laplace’s reaction to Clayman’s death shows that their bond was real.

Later, in volume 7, when his fellow members are grieving, Laplace deliberately states that “the overconfident Clayman was at fault,” provoking their anger toward himself.

By acting as a verbal punching bag, he redirects their frustrated grief away from despair.

This reveals his deep emotional intelligence and willingness to shoulder others’ pain in his own abrasive style.

Battle in Lubelius and Clash with Louis Valentin

During the later attack on Lubelius, Laplace confronts Louis Valentin, who has fully manifested his complete power.

This time, Louis proves to be an extremely difficult opponent.

Laplace struggles against Louis’s complete form and is ultimately forced into a retreat.

He escapes while carrying the severely injured Footman, prioritizing his comrade’s survival over the battle.

This fight highlights that even someone as skilled as Laplace can be pushed into a corner by top-tier opponents.

It also reinforces his habit of choosing survival and regrouping over pointless heroic stands.

Survival of the Eastern Empire Purge

When the Eastern Empire begins its aggressive campaigns and internal purges under Emperor Rudra and the manipulations of Kondo, many individuals are captured, controlled, or eliminated.

Laplace, however, happens to be away from the Eastern Empire at the time.

He has been assigned as a liaison to the monster nation, the Jura Tempest Federation, as part of alliance negotiations.

Because of his absence, he avoids the ruthless purge and mind-control measures that ensnare some of his companions.

Upon learning that several of his comrades have fallen under Kondo’s control, Laplace becomes desperate to save them.

He sincerely asks Rimuru and his allies for help, dropping much of his usual clowning to show genuine earnestness.

This period marks a turning point where Laplace begins to align more closely with Rimuru’s side.

His alliance is not based on manipulation, but on a heartfelt desire to rescue his mind-controlled friends.

Separation from Rimuru and Reunion in El Dorado

After Yuuki Kagurazaka and others are taken away by Feldway and his group, Laplace separates from Rimuru’s forces.

He moves independently for a time, following his own agenda and the concerns of the Moderate Harlequin Alliance.

Later, during the angels’ invasion plan against El Dorado, Kagali summons Laplace.

He rejoins his fellow Harlequins on the battlefield as their forces collide with the angel army.

During this operation, Laplace reunites with his former wife, Silvia, who recognizes him as the man he once was: the hero Sarion Grimwald.

Although Laplace himself has lost most of his memories from that life, the encounter carries heavy emotional weight.

Working alongside a freed Yuuki, who has shaken off external control, Laplace helps recover their comrades from domination.

Together, they manage to reclaim many of the allies who had been bound by enemy influence.

Battle Against Jahil and Apparent Death

Their success is short-lived when Feldway awakens Jahil, a powerful enemy entity.

In the ensuing chaos, Jahil captures Footman and unleashes attacks that threaten Laplace’s comrades.

Laplace steps in to shield his allies, placing himself in harm’s way to protect them.

He fights side by side with Yuuki in a desperate struggle.

Ultimately, Laplace and Yuuki vanish as a result of this confrontation, their bodies seemingly destroyed in the process.

However, given both of their infamous resilience and survival records, there is no definitive proof that Laplace has truly died.

The narrative leaves open the strong possibility that he could return.

His own reputation for being “hard to kill” supports the idea that his story might not be over.

Laplace is a Deathman, a type of undead being created by Kagali.

Deathmen are constructed from dead individuals, given new bodies and forms of immortality.

Unlike the mass-produced combat-specialized Deathmen such as Footman and Tear, Laplace is a unique, custom-made individual.

His creation process cannot be replicated, making him a one-of-a-kind existence among his kind.

Despite his undead nature, Laplace retains the combat experience of his former life as a hero.

This combination of heroic battle instincts and undead resilience makes him terrifying in combat.

His mentality is fully mature and sharp, unlike the more childlike mindsets of other Deathmen.

This allows him to coordinate complex plans, read his enemies, and keep his guard up even while joking around.

He also claims that, due to his special construction, he is not fully bound by Kagali’s commands.

This grants him unusual freedom of action and makes his loyalty to Kagali a matter of genuine choice rather than forced obedience.

Behind the mask of Laplace lies the former human hero Sarion Grimwald.

In his original life, he was the Emperor (Heavenly Emperor) of the Magic Kingdom of Sarion and the father of Elmesia El Ru Sarion.

He was also the elder brother of Elalude Grimwald and, by extension, the uncle of Ellen.

In that past life, his wife was Silvia, making Laplace her resurrected, altered form.

Sarion Grimwald once fought the Chaos Dragon, a battle that pushed him to the brink of death.

At that critical moment, he encountered Kagali.

Kagali transformed his dying body into that of a Deathman, giving birth to Laplace and allowing him to survive.

However, the process cost him almost all of his memories.

As a result, Laplace completely forgot his true name, his royal status, his family, and his past as a hero.

Only his extensive battle experience and combat instincts remained, explaining his abnormal level of skill.

This erased memory means Laplace goes through most of the series unaware of his connection to Elmesia, Elalude, Ellen, or Silvia.

The dramatic tension of later arcs arises when fragments of his past and his previous relationships begin to resurface around him.

Even without his memories, the core of who Sarion was—his bravery, his willingness to protect others, and his drive to survive—still lives on in Laplace.

His clownish persona, therefore, sits atop the buried identity of a once-great hero and emperor, making him one of the most complex figures in the series.
