Sukefusa Ichikawa is a sharp and mysterious samurai from The Elusive Samurai, well known for his amazing hearing and his role as Sadamune Ogasawara’s level-headed advisor. Even when everyone else panics, he stays cool and dependable, using his unique skills to sense things other people can’t. Sukefusa’s most memorable moment is when he tells his friend, “Don’t be stupid. I’m here,” showing both his reliability and his strangely casual approach to friendship.
Sukefusa Ichikawa has long, narrow eyes that look like he is always glaring.
He has a unique hairstyle that makes it seem like he has a second pair of ears on his head.
His front teeth stick out a bit from his mouth, and with his big ears, he almost looks like a mouse or another rodent.
Sukefusa is extremely calm and level-headed.
He doesn’t panic, even in dangerous situations.
Though he works closely with Sadamune Ogasawara, their relationship is more like a partnership than that of a lord and servant.
Sukefusa usually acts politely and lets Sadamune take the lead, but when Sadamune gets too emotional, Sukefusa isn’t afraid to speak plainly to calm him down.
He also has strange moments, like hugging Sadamune from behind and talking to him in a relaxed, friendly way, showing a playful side.
Sukefusa’s main strength is his incredible hearing.
His big ears give him unmatched listening skills, earning him the nickname "Swift-Eared Demon."
He can gather information by putting his ear to the ground, figuring out how many people are nearby, their ages, and even what they are doing based on vibrations.
If it is completely dark, he can use his ears like sonar to sense everything around him and take action.
Sukefusa has a close partnership with Sadamune Ogasawara.
He trusts Sadamune and backs him up, but he isn’t afraid to be honest, especially if Sadamune loses his composure.
He is also willing to act on his own judgment if he thinks Sadamune’s way is not working.
“Don’t be stupid. I’m here.”
Pursuing Tokiyuki Hojo and Kazama Genba
While staying at the Ogasawara residence, Sukefusa notices that Tokiyuki Hojo and Kazama Genba are sneaking in to steal an important imperial order that would take land from Suwa Yorishige.
He quickly senses them with his amazing ears and calls Sadamune Ogasawara to help.
Even though it’s dark, he tracks the two with perfect precision, cornering them with Sadamune’s help.
However, Kazama Genba outsmarts them, and they lose the imperial order and fail to capture Tokiyuki and Kazama.
Frustration with Shinano no Kami Kiyohara
Later, heavy taxes by Shinano no Kami Kiyohara cause uprisings among the local landowners.
Sukefusa is sent by Sadamune Ogasawara to complain to Shinano no Kami in his place, showing he is not happy with how things are being run.
Breaking Ties with Sadamune Ogasawara
As the fighting drags on, with Tokiyuki Hojo holding out against Sadamune’s army for months, Sukefusa and his ally Nobusada Murakami become frustrated.
They decide to leave the battle and break away from Sadamune Ogasawara, choosing to oppose him instead.
Historical Note
In history, Sukefusa Ichikawa is said to be a descendant of Nakano Yoshinari, one of the close companions of the second shogun of the Kamakura government, Minamoto no Yoriie.
Sadamune Ogasawara’s ancestor, Ogasawara Nagatsune, was also part of this famous group.
