A diligent setter who is skilled at understanding the personalities and characteristics of players. Since Kageyama's enrollment, he has moved to a backup setter, but he has not given up on getting chances to play.

He can't perform overwhelming tosses like Kageyama, but he carefully sets the ball to match the spikers. As a senior trusted by his teammates, he has greatly influenced Kageyama's growth. He doesn't initiate reckless attacks but uses his weakness in blocking to his advantage by switching positions with Tsukishima and shows intellectual and calm play backed by "practice and experience." In the spring tournament finals, he temporarily replaced a tired Kageyama and successfully broke through his weak offensive shell with a synchronized attack from Nishinoya's toss to Tendo.

His nickname is "Suga," and he has a gentle and kind personality. He is always smiling and approachable, but he can be frighteningly sharp with his words while smiling. Oikawa initially called him "Mr. Refreshing," but retracted that after seeing him play. He tends to get excited during matches, often screaming in the warm-up zone, and was cautioned by the referee during the spring tournament finals, and spectators commented, "He seems so quiet."

In the prefectural tournament against Date Tech, he over-concentrated his tosses to Azumane, making him face the blockers alone, which became a trauma. With the "genius setter" Kageyama's joining, he was relieved from the fear of his tosses leading spikers into blocks, but he reminded himself to always be ready to play. When Ukai hesitated to make Kageyama the regular setter, he advised, "I want to win as much as possible... You should choose Kageyama without hesitation." He mainly plays as a pinch server and one-point two-setter. In the semifinals of the spring qualifiers, he demonstrated his high serving skills.

After the Interhigh prefectural qualifiers, he drew out the true feelings of Sawamura, who was considering retiring from the club, leading all third-year students to aim for the spring high. After graduating from Karasuno High School, he became an elementary school teacher.

His academic performance is excellent (in the advanced class), and after the Interhigh prefectural qualifiers, his teacher told him to "retire from the club and focus on studying," but he maintained his belief that "I'm not playing volleyball just because there are benefits."
